jcater··on Ask HN: How do you handle clients who don't pay on time?
> What use is a 'relationship' with a customer that doesn't pay?

The most important take-away you’ll learn in this thread, OP. Sometimes it’s a hard lesson to learn, but the sooner you learn it, the better.

jcater··on Ask HN: COBOL devs, how are AI coding affecting your work?
But that was a huge assertion in itself. I’m personally having amazing results with Python in Opus 4.5, so this is very contextual.
jcater··on Firewood Banks Aren't Inspiring. They're a Sign of Collapse
To be fair, I don’t think OP was directing that statement to you, the submitter. Rather, he was commenting on the article itself.
jcater··on Americans no longer see four-year college degrees as worth the cost
Well, I’ll elaborate as a Gen-Xer; what you describe about financial aid was the exact same scenario we faced.

You are conflating the “exceptional” kid coming out if HS who is offered full rides (who clearly should take advantage of that and go straight into university with that full ride) with an average student who will have to pay for some or all of college. For the latter, community college for 2 years was and still is a good idea.

jcater··on What Porn Did to American Culture
His word choice and tone are unfortunate, as he did put a few words in your mouth you didn’t say. But… I agree with his underlying point. As other siblings have pointed out, this certainly seems like selection bias.

Is driving of rental cars on sidewalks really that big of a problem there to make that comparison?
jcater··on Jupyter Book
This is interesting. I’ve been tinkering with using Jupyter Notebooks for our somewhat intensive onboarding of new engineers. Is Pathbird solely focused on the education market? Is there pricing info anywhere?
jcater··on Online installment loans have taken the subprime market by storm
Sure, but as there were no full payment discounts, full cash buyers subsidized my payment plan.
jcater··on Online installment loans have taken the subprime market by storm
They do, as I bought a Peloton using Affirm. I was ready to pay cash, but they offered to do an interest free, no fee loan thru Affirm and split it across a couple of years. So I did it, because why not?

I’m guessing this was probably an arrangement between Peloton and Affirm to where the former paid some fee to the latter, and all of that is absorbed as marketing overhead just to get more people buying bikes.

jcater··on Medical equipment pricing is completely broken when a sling costs $200
Yes, cyanoacrylate (the group of adhesives that superglue belongs to), are used in medical and veterinary situations for exactly this purpose.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyanoacrylate#Medical_and_vete...

I've used off-the-shelf superglue on cut fingertips where I couldn't get bandages to stay. I believe it's also commonly used in place of stitches where you don't want the scarring that stitching would cause (e.g., parts of the face.)

It wears off in 3-4 days.

Not only are there hard limits, but at age 35, suddenly it’s considered a “geriatric pregnancy”.

The risk of complications go up.

Lower calorie per dollar, as long as none of it gets thrown out as waste.
jcater··on I Found the Best Burger Place in America, Then I Killed It
I live in a touristy area with lots of great, but high demand and correspondingly high priced, restaurants.

Several of the local places do "frequent diner/visitor" loyalty cards, where the 5th or 9th meal (for restaurants), coffee (coffee shops), etc are free. This offsets the otherwise high prices charged on menu items.

Also, once a year (during the off season, of course), the local high school sells a booster card that gets a percent discount off for the entire year at numerous local places.

This is of course not unique to a touristy area, but I find myself using them far more often than in other places I've lived.

jcater··on Georgia Has a Coast?
And three miles of saltwater marsh.

No, it’s not an island in the middle of the Atlantic, but it is one of the eight barrier islands of Georgia.

jcater··on Georgia Has a Coast?
Fall in general is great. My perception (which I’ve not validated) is October is generally wetter. That may just be from anomolies the last yew years than the actual climate, though.

Just don’t come the weekend of the Georgia-Florida football game in late October. 10,000 (newspaper’s estimate, not mine) Georgia fans flock to the island and get drunk. We’re not at all equipped to handle that many college kids all at once.

jcater··on Georgia Has a Coast?
It's the same group. Pinewood Atlanta was their first US location. There's also a Pinewood Malaysia.
jcater··on Georgia Has a Coast?
I live on St Simons.

You're conflating two islands here -- Sea Island is a separate island that has been privately owned since at least the 1920s. You have to drive across St Simons to get to Sea Island. For sure, Sea Island is a high end, gated resort community of a few hundred people.

St Simons is home to about 12k people. It has been an expensive place to live since at least the 80s. I, too, share your concerns about the current development going on -- I'm not sure the developers are in fact being careful about killing the golden goose. Developers are cutting down our historic oak trees and indiscriminately putting up cheaply built condos as fast as the corrupt planning commission will let them.

This is the perfect opportunity to plug the St Simons Land Trust: https://www.sslt.org/

jcater··on Georgia Has a Coast?
Yes, I live on the island mentioned in the article. This place gets insane with tourists during the Summer months, but gets much calmer during September. The weather is also nicer, with the highs averaging in the mid-80s(F). The summer months are generally hot and humid -- this is the deep South after all.
jcater··on Georgia Has a Coast?
Yeah, the Atlanta area is home to a lot of movies and TV shows at this point. There's even a huge movie studio built south of Atlanta (Pinewood, opened in 2014).

Most of the recent Marvell movies were shot here.

Recent films shot in Georgia include: Godzilla: King of Monsters, the Ant Man movies, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, Pitch Perfect 3, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House and Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Some television shows shot here: Stranger Things, Ozark, The Walking Dead, MacGuyver and Atlanta.

There's definitely a booming production industry in the Atlanta area.

jcater··on Ask HN: Are you a remote worker that escaped to the countryside?
St Simons Island, about an hour south of Tybee.
jcater··on Ask HN: Are you a remote worker that escaped to the countryside?
Yes, I moved to a small island off of the coast of Georgia, just north of Jacksonville, FL. Given that it has a vibrant tourism industry, I'm not sure I'd call it "rural", though it is an hour from any larger cities. It's not quite surburban either, though.

We love it here.

The "gotcha" is the need for solid internet connectivity. That's still hard to come by in truly "rural" places we looked at. Finding good schools is also a mixed bag, but that's true in urban settings as well.

jcater··on All Work and No Play: Why Kids Are More Anxious, Depressed (2011)
As a parent of a high functioning ASD child -- consider adding a way to attach that to clothing (or a way to attach a generic tether, which could then be used to attached to a belt or a necklace, etc) and you have a whole new market.

[edited] I know you market yourself as tetherless, but I'm referring to something as simple (and optional) as the mechanism Roku does for their wrist straps on remotes (and Nintendo Wii, etc):

jcater··on I Am Worried About My Ears
In the US, this varies per state. In most states, though, it is illegal to "unnecessarily" honk your horn. But as the sibling commented about the UK, it's rarely enforced and is at the discretion of the officer.

I don't think most people know it is illegal.
