jboynyc··on A Statement by Autistici/Inventati Collective About US Sanctions
Their characterization of the US govt as "a politically desperate administration" intending to "sway[] people and media attention away from their own violence and warmongering" sounds on point to me. The good news is that the administration is desperate and that they know they lack popular support for their life-denying actions; the scary thing is that this will certainly not be the last dumb thing they do out of desperation.

Excellent answer, nothing to add.

I suppose I'm not the only one wondering whether this could replace Calibre for me. Most features seem to be there, but will it allow me to sync ebooks to my Kobo device?

jboynyc··on Newsboat: an RSS/Atom feed reader for the text console
I didn't realize that Newsboat has Miniflux support! That means you can read your feeds from the console and keep everything in sync with the web interface or any other client software. I will try this out later.

This is something cultural sociologists study. See for instance https://www.thomasfranssen.net/sociology-of-culture though I'm sure there are more recent examples as well.

jboynyc··on Real Life Magazine: 2016-2022
This publication was started by Nathan Jurgenson, an American sociologist who was hired by Snapchat out of grad school as a sort of resident theorist. (He was a student of George Ritzer, of "McDonaldization" fame, and applied a similar conceptual framework to digital media, "playbor" etc. Jurgenson also cofounded a conference called Theorizing the Web that in its later years received funding from Snapchat.)

Snapchat provided the funding for Real Life, which has now been discontinued, probably in this context: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/08/31/technology/snap-layoffs-r...

As a result, the publication is winding down. (Note the past tense on the about page.)

jboynyc··on Judge rules Facebook parent Meta intentionally violated campaign finance laws
Fines for GDPR violations work that way too. A severe violation can be penalized with "a fine of up to €20 million, or 4% of the firm’s worldwide annual revenue from the preceding financial year, whichever amount is higher." https://gdpr.eu/fines/

jboynyc··on Ask HN: Are blog comments a thing of the past?
I believe Lobste.rs is a good citizen and sends a webmention. Other services could follow suit. There'd be no need for an additional product then.
jboynyc··on One Year with R
I'm not sure that's true anymore. The one thing that I find interesting about the R community (being at home in Pythonland myself) is the availability of great teaching and learning resources. At least that's the case in the social sciences, where R has pretty strong adoption.
jboynyc··on PipeWire: A year in review and a look ahead
I must admit I simply didn't realize the pulseaudio commands would still work. I figured they wouldn't because they were no longer installed after disabling pulseaudio and switching to pipewire. That's why I was trying to make things work with the pw-* commands and failing.
jboynyc··on PipeWire: A year in review and a look ahead
I recently made the switch in NixOS and found it pretty painless. Can't get my mic to work in Firefox though, and the other day I was looking through the manual trying to figure out how to use my HDMI screen's speakers rather than the built-in one and couldn't find the right incantation. Sounds like such rough corner cases will be a thing of the past soon. Congrats to the dev team!
jboynyc··on Venting doesn’t work
From TFA: “chatting with friends can bring closure when they help you reconstrue an event, rather than just recount it. What does that look like? Asking why you think the other person acted that way, prodding to see whether there’s anything to be learned from it all, and just generally broadening your perspective to ‘the grand scheme of things.’ Unfortunately, this type of meaning-making is far from common outside of therapy”
