jbigelow76··on Porn restrictions are leading to a VPN boom
I used to leave porn downloading overnight over 56k in the mid 90s.

Literal, delayed gratification.

jbigelow76··on For many home-schoolers, parents are no longer doing the teaching
In home school, there is less people and more choice.

Choice for whom, the student or the teacher? The teachers are the ones with the agendas, in all senses of the word.

jbigelow76··on Doctors on TikTok
I am not convinced this is widespread behavior.

How many does it take to be widespread (or more crucially, addressable) behavior, is it N+you?

Yes, if I saw myself on social media without consent, I would go straight to the college or professional association with a privacy violation complaint. But this article is just trying to fuel hatred.

Are there any release documents for doctors that you can cite that include a patient appearing, either knowingly or unknowingly, in social media? I know this sounds sarcastic because it's so ludicrous but if they exist I would like to know.

jbigelow76··on Jeremy Vaught spent 16 years to build @music on Twitter, then X took it away
Both are also serial liars. The small mercy with Musk vis-a-vis Trump is that his nationality and shifting demographics of the United States (Republican efforts at voter suppression not withstanding) should ensure he doesn't have a shot at becoming president of the United States.
jbigelow76··on Jeremy Vaught spent 16 years to build @music on Twitter, then X took it away
Reading stuff like this makes me think we are seeing Gen-X's version of Donald Trump, and it worries me.
jbigelow76··on How the Cheesecake Factory defied the restaurant industry’s rules of success
As a lifelong resident of the Dallas area (Garland, Richardson, Plano, Addison, Dallas, Sachse, back to Dallas, and now Allen), I think Cheesecake Factory is successfully splitting the difference between Bucca di Beppo and Texas Roadhouse :)
jbigelow76··on How the Cheesecake Factory defied the restaurant industry’s rules of success
Unrelated to the original article or referenced tweet, but still took a second glance to adjust to the X rebranding bullshit of twitter.
jbigelow76··on How the Cheesecake Factory defied the restaurant industry’s rules of success
>McCormack was part of the company’s major expansion in the ’90s, and went on to design for clients like MGM Resorts, BJ’s Restaurants, and Seasons 52.

If you had to summarize Cheesecake Factory in one sentence, "a Las Vegas casino re-imagined as a single restaurant" would be it.

jbigelow76··on You Suck at Excel (2015) [video]
Every time this comes up on HN I end up watching a decent amount of the video, if someone were to ask you "what does 'evergreen' content mean?" pointing them at this video would be a great example.
jbigelow76··on Apollo is dead. Long live Apollo
I'm pouring one out for Apollo tonight, I tried the official Reddit app and it's hot garbage and the Reddit website is somehow worse.

Mastodon and Lemmy are fine, but I'm old enough to remember the web I grew up with and that what I would really like to see is a Renaissance of niche bulletin boards and RSS based blogs. I'm not holding my breath though.

jbigelow76··on America aims for nuclear-power renaissance
Yep, not a resident though. There seem to be a constant stream of articles about housing issues in the Bay Area, don't recall any attributing the issue to wind farms, but I'd be interested to read any I might have missed.
jbigelow76··on America aims for nuclear-power renaissance
LOL, yeah, housing prices in the Texas (ex|sub)urbs are high because the wind farms are squeezing the home builders out. Where do you live again?
jbigelow76··on Reddit subs with millions of followers plan to extend the blackout indefinitely
I've never been a big reddit user but I increased my usage as Twitter devolved into what it is now, but now I'm going to have to find something else. I'll most likely start paying for Apple News for general/current event stuff, stick with HN for tech, but I no longer have a "turn off your brain and just decompress with some funny/random crap" outlet.

Bummer, I'm sure it was floated, and probably shot down for some stupid non-sensical reason, but I would have insta-paid something in the neighborhood of 20 bucks a year for a personal access token that I could plug into an app like Apollo and continue using Reddit via API.

jbigelow76··on Anchor Brewing Company ends national distribution, kills Christmas Ale
Saw this comment and realized how long it had been since I listened to "Punk in Drublic", has to be at least 15 years. I immediately went to Scavenger Type but then to "Linoleum", "The Brews", "Don't Call Me White", and now "The Cause", brings back memories man :)
jbigelow76··on Linda Yaccarino is the new CEO of Twitter
but in reality the biggest advertisers have come back and with her at the helm even more will.

I would bet advertisers like Apple got a huge sweetheart deal. The majority of advertising I see is (by volume), crappy "As Seen On TV" type products fronted by MANY different accounts (I can't block them fast enough), accounts promoting whatever thought leader angle they are working (also insta-blocked), and finally large brands that Twitter probably would like a lot more of.

jbigelow76··on Downtown San Francisco Office Tower Likely to Sell at Discount: Sources
I was hoping to get thirty thousand for my 1998 Honda Accord, but the best offer I got was four hundred bucks. Thanks for ruining the economy Work-From-Homers!
jbigelow76··on New study: 70% of type 2 diabetes cases linked to food choices
If you aren't diabetic you could pay for something like Nutrisense or Levels to get enough monitors to cover about 2-3 months of activity, learn what triggers spikes, and then cut it. What you see in those three months is pretty much what you are going to see going forward unless you were to make a significant lifestyle change and stick to it (going to/from carnivore/omnivore/vegetarian, cutting out alcohol, etc...)

I used Levels for about 3 months and I saw the same thing over and over again, it was obvious when I was being good about my eating, it was obvious when I went out for happy hour. I learned a couple things, mix a little fat or protein in if you are consuming carbs to blunt the spike, the alert to "take a walk to blunt the spike" is never long enough unless you go for an hour or more. Another year or two of wearing it wouldn't change any of that.

Unless your PC says for your condition of X we are going to try and get your glucose level to never go past Y and see if it fixes it, a CGM for non diabetic people is something you can timebox to 3-ish months, get the data, and get out for under a $1000 one time investment.

jbigelow76··on Eye Candy
This was super cool to click around on the various techniques and see the examples.

(Questions/Thoughts)

- I was looking to see if there was a Steadicam group, wondering if I would see a gif of Henry and Karen walking into the Copa, that's got to be one of the most famous shots in film in the last 40 years (not a critique, totally possible it's there under a different name I'm not aware of as a layperson, I didn't peruse every group.) [Edit note added]

- "Fourth Wall" should include a gif of "The Big Short", breaking the fourth wall was a great way to get the minutiae of the financial subject out of the way and return to the characters.

- Bonus upvote for finding a shot from "Halt and Catch Fire"! (dolly zoom)

Edit: I knew I was forgetting the proper term for my question about Goodfellas, it's a tracking shot. I didn't see the movie in there though, I think it should be added :)

jbigelow76··on Glucomate: an app for people who record, track, and monitor their blood glucose
Also there are services like levels or January.ai which white-label Abbott devices and handle all the prescription stuff for you.

Levels ships the Dexcom G6 currently (they have another option to get the Libre) if you aren't T1 or T2. It's not even while labeled, when you join levels your shipment comes in a Levels box but everything inside is in Dexcom packaging. You are even required to use the Dexcom app in conjunction with the Levels app (which can get really annoying because the Dexcom app, understandably assuming you are diabetic, emits LOUD alerts that you can't disable through your phone if your blood glucose reading would be problematic for someone that is diabetic.)

jbigelow76··on Tech CEO applauds an employee selling their dog to accommodate return-to-office
No I haven't, I was using sarcasm, to indicate that I think the CEO is straight up lying about the anecdote and it's just something he is using as cover for the policy change.
jbigelow76··on Tech CEO applauds an employee selling their dog to accommodate return-to-office
"They gave it a try and claimed they got robbed of 30 months salary."

Fixed that for you.

I do software development too, if opening my laptop was the only metric by which I was measured, damn, that would be pretty sweet! /s

jbigelow76··on Office vacancies in San Francisco jump to a record 33%
Won't somebody think of the shareholders!?
jbigelow76··on Rules for developers to design beautiful UIs without a designer
I don't know if it actually does, maybe in theory, we would assume these companies would be incentivized to optimize for speed and experience but you can't use "the exception that proves the rule" when the majority would fall into the exception category. There have been countless diatribes about how in B2B the purchaser is not the user, so speed, user experience, and functionality are all at best second order priorities. The apps I name checked above all probably provide the base level required amount of functionality that covers the needs of a lot of large privately held and all publicly held US companies, they are looking for the corp equivalent of Wal-Mart shoppers not Nordstrom shoppers (this dove tails into penny wise/pound foolish quarterly earning mindset, corporate America is dumb AF.)
jbigelow76··on Rules for developers to design beautiful UIs without a designer
In B2B it's usually ease and speed of operation that's more important

SAP (everything), Workday (HR), Service Now (help desk), Archer (compliance), SailPoint (compliance), and other applications that have been inflicted on my miserable existence over the last 25 years of corporate IT; all B2B enterprise applications that I guarantee did not consider either speed or ease of use to be remotely important.

jbigelow76··on Rand Paul blocks the fast-tracking of TikTok ban
"House Un-American Activities Committee" is a LOT of words to read, say, or remember. It's easier just to lump it all under "woke" now, a single, shorter more approachable word for the intended audience.

jbigelow76··on Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Last Act
Including the will to take illegal steroids without which he wins nothing and has no fame or career in public life.

Meh, his biggest body-building claims to fame were multiple Mr. Olympia titles. Is there any other Hollywood A-list type (current or former) of which that title has been the make or break factor? Schwarzenegger's peer at the time for the same title(s) was Lou Ferrigno, and he never did better than runner up at a time in which that competition had the most cultural cache within Hollywood; he even he had his own success in Hollywood as The Hulk (and 36 other movie/TV credits per wikipedia.)

Some of Schwarzeneggar's success comes down to "sheer will" as the GP posited. Some of it is also luck (right place/right time, the right "look" for a given role, etc...) And some of it is help from others, which he seems to readily acknowledge and pass on as a message to others[1]

To say Schwarzenegger is who he is only because of steroids is as shallow of an assessment as to say it's all "sheer will".

edit: cleaned up a sentence.

jbigelow76··on Woman with tuberculosis ordered to jail for refusing treatment
Give me liberty or give me death! Why not both?
jbigelow76··on Remastered 'Myst Mobile' Game Now Available on iPhone and iPad
Agreed, I went to download it on my iPad and searched "myst" and couldn't tell which one was the "real" one (or at least the one referenced in the article.) I finally went back to the article and clicked on the direct link to get it.
jbigelow76··on Silicon Valley needs to stop laying off workers and start firing CEOs
Some dipshit board member at Company X might happen to be some dipshit CEO at Company Y, they're all in on the scam :)
