jbhouse··on Dear JetBrains, Don't mess with your UI
Hot take time.

Actual professionals use keyboard shortcuts to easily navigate or bring to the forefront whatever they need in Intellij (the JB product I use)

If you are clicking through menus all day or are otherwise negatively affected to such a degree by a visual change like this, you are an amateur

So really, JetBrains is bringing consumer-grade UI practices to the world of... amateurs

This world for amateurs exists exists, as a crutch, within the larger world of the professional product.

However, the world of professional usage of Intellij remains essentially unchanged (granted, the new icons and extra negative space are annoying, they just are not significant)

TLDR: git gud, use a keyboard

jbhouse··on Ask HN: Have you experienced “hiring fraud?”
Same thing happened at a previous company I worked at about one year into the pandemic.

We still gave the guy until the end of the week to prove he could be useful.

He wasn't, so we let him go, but we would have kept him on if he was competent. Despite the fraud. Because it was such a pain to find a good dev at that time (not easy now, but not as hard, subjectively)

this article may have a good point, real shame the author attempted to lose 40% of readership in the first paragraph
jbhouse··on KDE Connect Now Available on iOS
why would they create their own version of spring boot? so they have more code to maintain and it takes longer for new devs to get ramped up?
jbhouse··on KDE Connect Now Available on iOS
this is incredible, I'm so glad to hear it

very interesting. I'm going to start using Neeva tomorrow at work
jbhouse··on Turmoil at Bezos' Blue Origin: Talent exodus after CEO push for return to office
Totally agree. I've been getting up to speed just fine at my new and (at least for now) fully remote job.

If you're struggling to fill the gaps or onboard people at a certain point you have to admit to either managerial or organizational failure to adapt. It's called taking responsibility

jbhouse··on Turmoil at Bezos' Blue Origin: Talent exodus after CEO push for return to office
"the cons are mostly your employers"

I'm not sure I would even agree with this. I have a better monitor setup at home, a quieter place to work and think, and I'm spending less of my day in pointless conversations for the sake of politeness.

My employer simply gets more out of me when I work from home AND turnover is reduced.

I think the pros outweigh the cons for employers, even if they don't care at all about their employees and even if we weren't in a tight labor market

you would be surprised at what a large effect the removal of friction can have. I bet this will convince a decent chunk of people that dual booting isn't worth it

jbhouse··on Arm China Has Gone Rogue
It's almost like China wants to make sure nobody ever lets them near useful IP again. This just seems counterproductive for them in the long run, though if you understand geopolitics better than I do, please help my understand how this is a good long-term strategy for China
jbhouse··on Get $15k to move to Michigan and work remotely
It's small. But as an avid fisherman and boater who would like to live in either Wisconsin or Michigan, this could be a deciding factor (remote work is only temporary for me right now, but theoretically it might make a difference for me, though the Michigan winters would probably still be a non-starter)
jbhouse··on Spotify employees threaten to strike if Joe Rogan podcasts aren’t edited/removed
That type of thing might disrupt the narrative. Can't have that! Those free thinkers are dangerous.
jbhouse··on VMware Cuts Pay for Remote Workers Fleeing Silicon Valley
When you cut pay are you more likely to lose your best and brightest, or those without better options? Sure, maybe it helps the bottom line now, but lowering wages to reduce head count is the best way to ensure brain drain (in most cases, obviously there are exceptions to everything)
jbhouse··on Ask HN: How to get a job without degree?
Can (anecdotally) confirm

Just did some interviews last week. Read through each candidate's experience section so I would have an idea of what they worked on and how I should calibrate my technical questions.

Stopped reading after the technical section because quite frankly educational attainment, in my experience, is at best loosely correlated with being able to think clearly and get things done.

Also, kudos to you rxsel!

jbhouse··on Ask HN: How to get a job without degree?
Hi there, Java Dev at big tech company (not FFANG big, but big) here. Just did 3 interviews last week, and we have 4 more people lined up next week. I looked at resumes before each interview so I could see what experience they had and what they worked on, so I would know what to ask about, and could calibrate my technical questions appropriately.

I never once looked at someone's education. Quite frankly, I do not give a singular shit.

Management/HR might be different, other devs may have different attitudes. But I thought it might be worth putting my recent experience out there. Which, to reiterate, is that I care what you've worked on, and what you have experience with, not what credentials you have.

I thought the last paragraph was a bit odd, but chalked that up to my own ignorance of AI. Honestly, I am incredibly impressed by this... and a bit fearful

jbhouse··on Ask HN: What's the worst piece of software you use everyday?
I've never had problems with git "not mapping" to my mental model of what I'm doing, so maybe you could help expand on what that means. But I've run into two categories of people that struggle with git

Novice developers that just haven't taken the time to learn more than three basic git commands. Their lack of knowledge is the problem 99.9% of the time, but they don't know enough to know they are the limitation, and they blame the tool instead

Old developers that come with a mental model of another VCS and either cannot or will not change their mental model and continue to be frustrated that they weren't consulted when git was designed

A third category may exist, but I have not met these people IRL
