jayess··on Fireflies may disappear, scientists are trying to count how many are left
I have the opposite experience in Michigan. I have so many fireflies that my yard looks magical just after dusk. More than I've ever seen.
jayess··on Respaid (YC S23) – Lost Chargebacks? How we got 50% collected within 20 Days
Your AI says you're a lawyer but you're not? That's not exactly legal in the US.

Don't just ban facial recognition for landlords, ban it for everyone, including the government.

The FTX bankruptcy trustee will be able to claw it back as an avoidable transaction.
jayess··on House Passes Bill to Ban Pre-Dispute Employment Arbitration Pacts (2022)
This article was from 2022. The bill died after the congress adjourned.

I handle litigation for my company. The far majority of it is someone looking for a payday. We blow millions of dollars on lawyers fighting BS lawsuits. It sickens me. I'm a lawyer and litigators disgust me (for the most part). It's 90% bottom feeders.

jayess··on Did an F-22 Blow Up an Illinois Club’s Hobby Balloon?
There are quite of few of these amateur radio balloons aloft at any given time. It cracks me up that so much money was wasted taking one of them out.

You can track them real-time here: https://amateur.sondehub.org/ (zoom out and look for the balloon icons)

jayess··on GoDaddy: Hackers stole source code, installed malware in multi-year breach
Godaddy has the most user-hostile platform of any domain registration company I've ever encountered in the 25+ years I've been registering domains. It's utter garbage in every way.
jayess··on House Passes Bill to Ban Pre-Dispute Employment Arbitration Pacts (2022)
Thankfully it never passed the senate.
jayess··on Exxon Posts Record Annual Profit of $55.7B
On $413 billion in revenues, so about a 13% profit margin. And $77 billion in taxes paid.
jayess··on SBF Written Testimony Notes 12/12/2022
Wow. He is delusional. He can't understand why the Chapter 11 team won't talk to him. He's toxic waste. He's headed for a very long prison sentence. They want absolutely nothing to do with him.
jayess··on The United States of America vs. Samuel Bankman-Fried Indictment [pdf]
Because hearsay is an out-of-court statement, but there are exceptions, including a statement against the person's interest. FRE 804(b)(3).*

In other words, if you try to introduce an out-of-court statement that supports your case, it's hearsay; if the statement is against your interest, it's allowable.

Of course there are other exceptions and nuances, but this is the jist of it.

jayess··on The United States of America vs. Samuel Bankman-Fried Indictment [pdf]
It's often arrogance that leads to these things. I have a feeling he thought that the "aw shucks, I didn't know what was happening and I want to make things right" shtick would somehow work. He seems like a pretty dumb guy.
jayess··on The United States of America vs. Samuel Bankman-Fried Indictment [pdf]
I'm a civil lawyer, not criminal, but maybe a criminal lawyer can chime in. Don't they have to allege specific facts in an indictment? If I were served with this as a civil complaint, it would be deficient on its face.
jayess··on Boeing’s last 747 is rolling out of the factory

jayess··on WikiLeaks is struggling to stay online as millions of documents disappear
Meaningless? We learned that Hillary Clinton's team was responsible for promoting Donald Trump as the republican nominee. Their "pied piper" candidate.

jayess··on Renting a car will be a pain until at least 2022
My goodness, what a bleak, authoritarian point of view with so little imagination.
jayess··on Renting a car will be a pain until at least 2022
My husband and I bought a house precisely for this reason. We had lived in downtown apartments for the past 15 years but couldn't take being so cooped up anymore. I LOVE the extra space and my own yard. I miss being in a high-rise, but I love my house even more.
jayess··on Renting a car will be a pain until at least 2022
Interesting. I just sold my off-lease car to Carmax for $6k more than the buyout. When I was at Carmax, they had me call BMW financial services on speakerphone because they wouldn't give carmax the final payoff/lienholder information. That must have been what was happening.
jayess··on Facebook's Response to Drug Cartels and Human Traffickers Is Weak

jayess··on Facebook tried to make its platform a healthier place, but it got angrier
My guess is that they've determined what that breaking point is and have optimized for it.
jayess··on Unplanned Freefall? Some Survival Tips (2001)
I'm reminded of the story of the girl who survived, somehow, a fall from a plane in the Amazon while strapped in to her seat. The theory is that the row seats spun like one of those seed pods and slowed her down when hitting some trees.

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/18/science/koepcke-diller-pa...

I've often thought about this topic since the explosive decompression of Malaysia flight 17 over Ukraine. The anti-aircraft missile apparently caused an instant, explosive decompression of the plane. Assuming you weren't hit by one of the projectiles, you would have found yourself suddenly free-falling.
