javchz··on You can defeat the Dream Devourer from Chrono Trigger using an int overflow
Cross has an amazing soundtrack tho. I think this is probably the main area where didn't felt like a downgrade.

But I agree. Chrono trigger it's the closet thing to perfection in a JRPG. Just pure mastering of the craft in all areas, music, art direction, gameplay, pacing, etc.

It's not that cross it's bad, not at all, has a lot of innovation, but Trigger has a big shadow to scape.

javchz··on Fixing a bricked Framework laptop
In PCs it's usual for a lot of motherboards have a dual bios, so if something fails (eg no POST) in the update, the mobo fall backs to the other one. It's a cheap chip in bulk, that would help a lot in cases like this.
javchz··on Qwen 3.8 27B is excellent, but it defaults to overthinking things
I wonder if this can be fixed with LORAs.
javchz··on Online Friends Are Real Friends
I've experience that probably in the same ratio with IRL and Online contacts.

Sometimes people just go into different directions, it's sad but it's ok.

I've kept alive some online friendships from the bb forums, that I've met in real life a couple of times.

Similar to friends from HS, college or ex coworker friendships, sometimes interests change, they get into weird values you don't share or mature at a different speed than you. Sometimes it's just a logistics problem, it's hard to keep friends when you have a family, jobs and live in another time zone.

I've been ghosted by IRL friends as bad as with online friends. Outside of an awkward encounter in the mall or something like that, there is no real difference in that regard.

javchz··on Shinjuku Station in 3D
Awesome project.

I consider myself someone with a good sense of direction in big buildings, malls, hospitals, etc., maybe a side effect to playing video games and such, but it's rare for me to get lost in big, complex structures.

But man, Shinjuku humbled me badly. That thing is a Metroidvania level IRL. If you ever go there, please don't buy a ticket with only 5 minutes to get to the right platform. Give yourself at least 15 minutes or more.

It's an awesome place, but even with signs in English, it can be easy to get lost.

javchz··on The Age of Personalized Hardware Is Coming
Im surprised by how bad LLMs are with SVGs but somehow are oke-ish with CAD and other weird files.
javchz··on 24-bit/192kHz music downloads and why they make no sense (2012)
This. It may be a niche. But music that works with volume as part of the composition can be amazing.

But most music today has heavy compressors in the pipeline that kills dynamic range in favor of allowing you to hear almost even whispers, even in traffic or a city with ear pods.

But if you're from the first group, as you said it's more noticable the benefits of having better codecs and bit depth vs heavily compressed top billboard songs where even listening the master track from the studio, falls into diminishing returns.

javchz··on Raspberry Pi 5 – 16GB RAM
Agree. It's clear since COVID that Pi it's barely a company for makers or DIYers anymore, but it's a supply company for small to medium industries to integrate cheap PCs in their manufacturing process and they are good at that role.
javchz··on Changes to Gemini model access and limits
For reference this is a big price hike:

Plus went from x10 usage to only x2 vs the free tier. Pro from x33 to x4 Ultra from x166 to x80

javchz··on Apple's $599 MacBook Neo Sold Out Through April Amid Surging Demand
I think it’s too little for this day and age as well, but in Apple’s defense, their RAM compression on ARM works amazingly well and performs similarly to 12GB on Windows.

With that said, I hate that you can’t upgrade the RAM or storage.

I hope that at least one side effect of this is that developers will have a business case for performance improvement dev time, as those machines will become a juicy target, similar to video game consoles that may not have the best specs but are consistent and have a large number of units in the market.

javchz··on Apple's accidental moat: How the "AI Loser" may end up winning
What I think was a wasted opportunity was not bringing the xserve back, being one of the few e2e solutions out there at scale.
javchz··on Anthropic expands partnership with Google and Broadcom for next-gen compute
AI being a bubble it's not mutually exclusive of being a real and useful technology and the existence of non-snake oil companies.

Cisco was a bubble in the dot com crash, despite being a company that provide real value and profit, just not at the level of the crazy expectations from the time.

javchz··on Music for Programming
The Winner Takes It All lyrics are great for commits and Pull Requests: I don't wanna talk If it makes you feel sad And I understand You've come to shake my hand I apologize If it makes you feel bad
javchz··on Lemonade by AMD: a fast and open source local LLM server using GPU and NPU
Any recommendations in the current market? Love how plug and play and is on Linux from the driver side of things.
javchz··on Code has always been the easy part
Totally. I would add that code that "works" it's easy to do. Code that it's efficient, easy to maintain and safe... That it's another story.

But the sad truth is that most software can be or it's done with shitty code that "kinda works" as long as the CPU it's fast enough.

javchz··on Show HN: Llama 3.1 70B on a single RTX 3090 via NVMe-to-GPU bypassing the CPU
Yeah a ramdisk would probably work wonders. It's a shame Intel optane didn't became a standard, those type of workflows would be amazing for it.
javchz··on Waymo robotaxi hits a child near an elementary school in Santa Monica
I bet we'll the the SUV mania in the future as something crazy, like smoking in a plane or using lead for gasoline. Irrational large size cars that people get because everyone it's afraid of another SUV hitting them in a sedan. The tragedy of the commons.
javchz··on No ARIA is better than bad ARIA
I think this is the way, automated testing for all patches, small changes, and manual testing for big releases.
javchz··on You should write an agent
One should be melting sand to get silicon, anything else it's too abstract to my taste.
javchz··on How I bypassed Amazon's Kindle web DRM
Spite is an underated productivity tool.
javchz··on Uv overtakes pip in CI
As many flaws as the npm/yarn/pnpm ecosystem has, its interoperability is waaaay better than the whole juggling act between pip, ven, poetry, Anaconda, Miniforge, and uv across projects.

UV it's a step in the right direction, but legacy projects without Dockerfile can be tricky to start.

javchz··on The RSS feed reader landscape
Liferea looks too old, has a lot of bugs... But man that thing makes me happy, just headlines and click what I want to read.
javchz··on Samsung smart fridge displaying advertisements
Specially in the high end, you want oled or high refresh rates? You have to buy a "smart tv" that requieres internet to setup, even if you plan use it only with an HDMI device.

I miss old dumb tvs

javchz··on Gene-edited pancreatic cells transplanted into a patient with type 1 diabetes
Yes, but even lifestyle changes (like a diet low in glycemic load and building muscle) can help reduce many of the harmful effects of type 2 diabetes, even sending it into remission for some people in early stages.

Type 1 is a different story. It’s the lack of natural insulin production (due to a damaged pancreas, autoimmune or other causes), basically the opposite problem to type 2, and no amount of lifestyle changes will replace of need of insulin doses.

javchz··on Ghrc.io appears to be malicious
What it's funny it's that because tokenization there is a non zero chance a LLM audit may not see anything wrong here, similar to the strawberry problem.
javchz··on How can AI ID a cat?
The same with Google photos, it groups similar cats as just one. Fun fact does the same for human twins
javchz··on GPT-5
I can already see LLMs Sommeliers: Yes, the mouthfeel and punch of GPT-5 it's comparable to the one of Grok 4, but it's tenderness lacks the crunch from Gemini 2.5 Pro.
javchz··on 3D printable 6" f/5 compact travel telescope model
Depends on the material and settings. But for example PETG it's as strong as a water bottle.
javchz··on Apple's Liquid Glass is prep work for AR interfaces, not just a design refresh
The Lumia was such a great deal back in the day. An amazing camera for the time, a great UI, comfy to use and supported crashes as a champion. The last bits of classic Nokia legendary hardware. It's a shame that the Microsoft ecosystem was so limited in apps.
javchz··on The Visual World of 'Samurai Jack'
I loved the small segments of behind the scenes the did for Samurai Jack back in the day in CN. It was my first time as a child to appreciate visuals and sound in a new perspective.

Even to this day a beautiful work of art.
