Keto operates in both worlds. There are real world, approved applications. Even with multiple sclerosis keto has been shown to help with fatigue and depression, but it's not yet an approved treatment. It probably will never be. On the other hand some people with MS tout keto as a cure, for which there is scant evidence.
>Bud: It's Queens, Dad and a 5% mortgage and you rent the top room--I gotta live in Manhattan to be a player, Dad. There's no nobility in poverty anymore, y'know. One day you're going to be proud of me, you'll see...
Much of that raw, punk, diy, screw the rules mindset came from the working class. In the 90s it started to shift I think along with the offshoring of many blue collar jobs, and rise of FIRE [0] (finance, insurance, real estate) which are historically conservative industries.
Nowadays musicians are celebrated for their gross ticket sales more than their music, look at Taylor Swift's recent tour. People in my office obsessively discussed all week how much money she was making at each show. Back to your point, profit is the driver today, for better or worse. You won't get a filthy, crusty punk show anymore, but at least the venue is compliant with all current fire codes.
I feel personally attacked! All kidding aside, life's gotten more complicated since I was a teenage suburban punker. work, daycare, exercise, family outings, and the occasional museum visit take up all my time.
Emotions are high right now, but destroying more innocent lives isn't the answer.
Undeniable tragedy what happened, innocent lives lost and countless more will die in this war, but accusing and doxxing innocent people whose lives will be overturned seems like the wrong approach here.
In MS we're getting closer to finding the cause and ultimately the cure. It does take a while for research to get funneled to the right person with the right specialty and right funding -- sometimes years, decades.
I'm not sure tying the diseases together would be a winning strategy...? My MS could be caused by the EBV living in B-Cells and a genetic or environmental (or both) trigger. Your UC may be caused by a certain bacteria living in your gut triggering a T-Cell response by a different genetic or environmental element.
And yeah, the doctors don't want to hear my pet theories. hah. I have done my own labs, brought them in, and the doctor just gives me a condescending look like - why are you even trying? I guess they don't know how desperate most of us are for answers.
I was diagnosed almost 15 years ago and doing fairly well. I skipped the 'CRAB' drugs specifically because of the depression/suicide risk. Being already at risk for those things I thought the negatives far outweighed the positives -- personal choice.
So glad Gilenya is working for you! Some of the new drugs are quite amazing.
As a person with Multiple Sclerosis seeing a neurologist I have been wondering this very thing since my diagnosis. I am on a B-cell depleting drug. It feels silly talking to my neurologist about my B cells. Lots of tests to determine neurological function, but very little tests done on immune function.
For Nagel it appears to have been a positive factor:
"Rowe contends that his war experience had a profound effect on his personality and his approach to the subject. Before the war, he had been a guarded and solitary scholar. Now he was ‘much more openly ambitious: he had enjoyed having power and influence in the army, and he now wanted power and influence in his civilian career.’"
Maybe it was common in those days to sacrifice for the common good. Not to be that guy, but these days it feels like most people are far too self-absorbed to set aside their own ambitions for an ideology, perhaps myself included. I can't envision today's intelligentsia (influencer-istas) laboring over military documents and making government salary. "How do I monetize this" would probably be most people's first thought.
Maybe I'm just salty today.
How is it different?
Aren't people just expressing sadness in a way that they've been conditioned to do? If sad, do sad things. Drink alcohol, put on a sad song list, reach for comfort of nostalgia, etc? I can't think of many novel ways to express sadness.
>Virginia Sole-Smith, author of a brave and radical new book...
It's just click bait in literary form. Make "radical" claim to get attention --> sell books.
