jasonkolb··on Artist banned, told to “find a different style”- AI-made art
Reddit is a worse echo chamber than Twitter ever was.

I gave up on it when I got banned from certain subreddits for posting quotes from congressional testimony. If you post anything that deviates in the slightest from the moderator's viewpoint, you get banned.

The end result is an echo chamber that's getting tighter and smaller, excluding any diversity of opinion. It's no way to run a business.

jasonkolb··on The Man Behind “Fortnite”
I like this observation. You could argue that Salesforce did the same thing pivoting from CRM into the platform as a service market. They had the user management, security, configuration tools, reporting, etc, that they were able to take into marketing, call center, etc.
jasonkolb··on Johnson & Johnson knew for decades that asbestos lurked in its Baby Powder
My dad used baby powder as deodorant because he had sensitive skin. Died of lung cancer at age 58, and never smoked. Anecdotal, but this really pisses me off.
jasonkolb··on Dissolving the Fermi Paradox
I've been listening to the "3 Body Problem" trilogy by Cixin Liu. I'd highly recommend it because not only is it some mind blowing sci-fi, but it also contains one of the most interesting solutions to the Fermi paradox that I've ever seen. I don't want to give anything away because the books are a real treat if you're like me, but the explanation is based on game theory and actually makes a ton of sense.

Highly recommended.

jasonkolb··on Fluree DB – A scalable blockchain database
Me too. Have you find anything good so far?
jasonkolb··on About This Googler's Manifesto
> What an absurd statement. The manifesto argues that women are genetically inferior and that most women developers shouldn't have their job.

That's not what he said at all. He said they are, on average, different, but people can't talk about it without resorting to these Trumpish generalizations and accusations. Did you actually read it?

jasonkolb··on NYPD is canceling its Palantir contract
Don't know why you're being downvoted for this, it's actually pretty smart. Like leaking an unsubstantiated rumor to a reporter but probably with more legal ramifications.
jasonkolb··on Ask HN: Do other fields of engineering have an equivalent to whiteboarding?
It's really sad to me that whiteboard is thought of as an interviewing tool. Opened this thread thinking "cool, maybe there are some brainstorming techniques I haven't heard of from other industries" and there's only stuff about interviewing techniques.

Maybe I can help. If I need to explore some ideas and there's no whiteboard handy I write on the windows instead. Gotta be prepared when inspiration hits!

jasonkolb··on Google Family Link
I am curious to know how you would prevent a child from running into the road given that said child isn't yet mentally developed enough to understand the risk. And they will do it over and over regardless of how well or in how many different ways you try to explain the risk to them.
jasonkolb··on Teenager's sickle cell reversed using a treatment to change his DNA
Is this using CRISPR or some other method of editing the DNA?
jasonkolb··on Goldman Sachs automated trading replaces 600 traders with 200 engineers
I assume they will need to sign off on the model... I expect to see a lot of this in the future.
jasonkolb··on Master Plan, Part Deux
Google has Waze data. Which I would think serves as a GREAT set of labels for the data that the self driving cars collect.
jasonkolb··on Ask HN: As a programmer do you have ups and downs and periods of intense doubt?
This isn't unique to you, or to developers. What you're describing is part of the human experience. There's even a name for it, "Dark night of the soul". Everyone experiences it, in every walk of life.

jasonkolb··on Can a 700 M.P.H. Train in a Tube Be for Real?
The shit talking about this is disappointing to me. Isn't this the route of crazy idea that moves us into the future? It's not supposed to be easy. You think people would put their livelihood and reputation on the line for something that they think is a sham?

Seriously, if this mentality were pervasive we would not be having this conversation on the internet or driving cars to knowledge work jobs, we would be riding horses to the field.

I love the nerve and ambition it takes to try something that seems impossible, these are the people moving the world forward.

Edit: words

jasonkolb··on Let’s ban elementary homework
My kids go to a Montessori school as well. My wife and I were sold on the approach within the first five minutes we were in the classroom during the tour. These were not wild kids being controlled by adults, these were small adults being taught how to function in the world. They came up and shook my hand and introduced themselves, took out and put away their own work, asked for help, and were very polite when they needed a teacher's help. Once we started looking into how the materials were structured and built from basic concepts on up, we were hooked.

It's incredibly expensive but also well worth the sacrifice.

jasonkolb··on How cancer cells fuel their growth
I became really interested in this a while back after watching a fascinating BBC documentary about fasting. It stated that cancer could not grow in the absence of IGF-1 (a growth hormone secreted in response to protein ingestion). I did a bunch of research and found barely anything out there about it, but the little I found did seem to back it up.

I recommend anyone interested in this topic watch this film, it's great: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xvdbtt_eat-fast-live-longer...

jasonkolb··on Whoever Is Leaking Trans-Pacific Partnership Drafts: Please Leak More
The negotiations and drafts are in fact secret even from Congress at this point, and there's a movement underway to give "fast-track authority" to the president which would also remove the debate from the bill.

"Obama has asked Congress to pass so-called Trade Promotion Authority legislation that would prohibit congressional amendments before an up or down vote on the Trans-Pacific Partnership"

jasonkolb··on Amazon Dash Button
This is incredibly cool. I love the way it blurs the line between the physical and the digital. I very much dislike the trend towards touchscreens on everything, I personally like physical controls that have a single purpose, like a volume button.

I could easily order laundry soap on my phone, but this is far quicker and easier, and a genius move by Amazon.

jasonkolb··on Moving away from Puppet: SaltStack or Ansible?
Ansible seems to have more traction: https://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=ansible%2C%20saltsta...
jasonkolb··on Microsoft Cloud Growth Drives Strong Fourth-Quarter Results
This is a one-time hit. They're now enforcing licensing very strictly where they didn't before and offering "nicer" terms if they buy some Azure instead of paying those costs retroactively. It'll only work once, and will create a lot of bad karma.
jasonkolb··on Things learned using Elastic Search (2013)
That's because there's no one place to put the snippets. They work in multiple places, and can be embedded within one another. It's very powerful, and very confusing to get started with.
jasonkolb··on Things learned using Elastic Search (2013)
Just curious, why do you say to forget about rivers? Did you run into problems? It seems like kind of a nice way to bootstrap data into Elasticsearch.
jasonkolb··on A Server Naming Scheme
I kind of like the approach Elasticsearch takes to this, name an instance after a random Marvel superhero. Keeps things interesting.
jasonkolb··on Call me maybe: Elasticsearch
Would you mind sharing your workaround?
jasonkolb··on Teaching creationism as scientifically valid now banned in all UK public schools
One of the problems is the connotations tied up in the word "God". Because there's so much history, baggage, and tradition tied up in that word it makes it difficult to do any sort of real experiments based on it, nevermind using that word in any defined sense in the first place.

But that said, I'm with you. It saddens me to see most scientists completely close their mind to an idea. It flies in the face of the idea of experimentation and discovery. Especially bad when you see people dismissing very valid interpretations of experiments simply because the downstream ramifications make them uncomfortable (the Copenhagen interpretation comes to mind).

jasonkolb··on Elasticsearch Raises $70 Million
Honestly I'm not sure, I haven't used Solr. I was just comparing it to the relational databases I've used, key-value stores like Cassandra, and other documents stores like Mongo. It definitely doesn't replace relational stores, but IMO blows all of the other NoSQL data stores out of the water. The Lucene indexing behind the scenes just really delivers some impressive functionality.
jasonkolb··on Elasticsearch Raises $70 Million
I'm sitting in Elasticsearch training right now (during a caffeine break). These are some really great guys that know their stuff, and they're committed to contributing back to the OSS version everything that makes sense. They contribute a ton of code back to Lucene and employ a lot of the brightest minds in this space.

On the product side, I'm sitting here being amazed at some of the problems they've solved very elegantly. Elasticsearch has a bright future.

jasonkolb··on How to exploit home routers for anonymity
I often wonder the same thing. Other things that require the same level of expertise typically tell you that you need to do something by actively breaking. I know I need to call my heating and cooling guy because my air conditioning stops working, but nothing breaks to tell you to change your router settings. Technically, it's already broken.
jasonkolb··on How to exploit home routers for anonymity
I think you give way too much credit to the average person. It's easy to lose sight of how scary technical things are to normal people when you're in it day in and day out, but to ask the average person to change something in their router is kind of like asking me to replace a cylinder in my car.

There's a reason things like the Geek Squad are around and can charge as much as they do...
