jankotek··on How to arm Caesarean babies with the gut bacteria they need
Breast milk already contains gut bacteria naturally. No need to do anything extra.
jankotek··on Old Laptops as Secondary Monitors
Asus Zenscreen and others have build in displaylink, so it works over USB3 with $3 adapter.
jankotek··on Odroid-HC4 is a $65 2-bay network attached storage device
no. Vibrations while it runs matter. Do not put it next to speaker.
jankotek··on Researchers discover new salivary glands in the human head
Leaches produce enzyme that prevents blood cloth from forming. It also improves oxygenation. For some wounds, leaches would protect leg or arm from amputation.

long time fan anf consumer, but bye....

jankotek··on Microsoft just force restarted my Windows PC again to install more unwanted apps
EEh good job? Forced restarts with long subsequent boot time, will just drive people to disable Windows Update completely.
jankotek··on Animation of how bridges were built in Central Europe in the Middle Ages [video]
Bronze knifes are bad. Malnutrition sucks. Life expectancy (if surving birth) was 30 years.

But I am sure they would handle covid better ;)

jankotek··on 'I'm sick of influencers asking for free cake'
In US you have 500 types of soda, but at the end it is just a soda. The same applies for tools, house stuff etc. There are more important things in life than decision process.
jankotek··on 'I'm sick of influencers asking for free cake'
Actually that would be amazing. But it has to solve privacy, cover cost of wrong items and never ship crocked fakes.
jankotek··on Cosmonaut Crashed into Earth 'Crying in Rage' (2011)
Soyouz 1 was new technology and was bound to had some teething problems (like Apollo). Similar issues were very common even on other missions. There were backups and Soyuz 1 managed to deorbit.

Soyouz capsule is stabilized aerodynamically. And solar panel is not even on part that deorbits...

There were several delays. Problem was in parachute storage. It was kept in pod without maintenance. Before mission it must be checked and refolded, this did not happen. Parachute become moldy, sticky and did not open...

My source is a book from this guy:

Karel Pacner is a Czechoslovak journalist, with long history in soviet space mission. He was only soviet-block journalist who covered Apollo 11 on site. In 1990ties he had series book about soviet space mission based on his study of soviet archives.

jankotek··on KDE Plasma 5.20
》On-screen displays that appear when changing the volume or display brightness (for example) have been redesigned to be less obtrusive
jankotek··on KDE Plasma 5.20
Yes, it is great compared to alternatives.

Release linked here reworked on screen notifications. So that sound problem may be fixed. Otherwise you can change association for volume keys and use your own command.

You can uninstall nepomuk etc..

jankotek··on KDE Plasma 5.20
KDE is quite good at customizing this stuff. You can pin documents and windows to Workspace or Activity. It even remembers this config between sessions.
jankotek··on Down the ergonomic keyboard rabbit hole
I did the cleaning bit, even tryed soldering. Maybe moist corroded something, no idea.
jankotek··on In Finland the average amount of data transferred per SIM card is 17.3GB/month
Decade ago I used 20GB monthly on 3G SIM. It was on plan mandated by Irish goverment to bring internet into rural areas. Sometimes you need regulations to break monopoly.
jankotek··on Down the ergonomic keyboard rabbit hole
I had 3 of those, but they are very unreliable. Contact foil always fails after couple of years.
jankotek··on If pay had kept pace with productivity gains, minimum wage would be $24 an hour
> Smart-but-lazy employees are interested in efficiency, and will work uncharacteristically hard in order to achieve it.

So if their job could be replaced with simple script....

jankotek··on US Insulin prices 8 times higher than in other nations
Some brits travel to France for surgeries :)

An EU Greece is probably best option.

jankotek··on One Guy Ruined Hacktoberfest 2020
I would not be too harsh. This way it does not spam normal repos.
jankotek··on Do things that don't require scale
The whole "things must scale" made sense 20 or 10 years ago. But today there is so much competition and free capital. New business is lucky if it carves out small niche and turns profitable.

The same with hardware. We had tiny machines comparable to Raspberry Pi 4 hooked in cluster. Today you can rent single server with 24TB DDR RAM and countless SSDs.

jankotek··on Repurposing my old Chromebook to a low power home server
Yep, it is fire hazard.
jankotek··on We Don’t Like Our Underground House
sorry, i missed initial quote
jankotek··on We Don’t Like Our Underground House
》 not with the kind of house itself

I disagree. Normal house with free dry circulating air is very forgiving. It is also easy to fix, walls are freely accessible.

Underground structures are very difficult. Even most professionals will get it wrong.

jankotek··on Microsoft Has a Large Presence at This Year's X.org Conference
> For XDC2020 there is Microsoft as one of the silver sponsors for the event.

Good for organizers. Dev conferences in Poland are not exactly a gold mine.

jankotek··on The compositor is evil
Giants like Airbnb have resources to write fast and responsive apps. But it is still slow. There is no point to worry about 16ms latency, if web app refreshes 6x times just to load couple of images.
jankotek··on The compositor is evil
Most of those problems could be avoided by using higher refresh rate. 120+Hz is pretty common in gaming and phones.

In reality we render stuff with slow javascript. Latency after key press may not be 16ms, but 16 seconds.

jankotek··on Orcas striking sailing boats in the Straits of Gibraltar
Orcas and sharks are after fat. Whales, seals, pinguins are great. Humans are too skiny.
jankotek··on To manage wildfire, California looks to what tribes have known all along
Fire was used in ancient europe for agriculture by semi nomadic people.
jankotek··on The Weakness of Anthropic Arguments
》This would prevent carbon-based life from existing, sure; but would it prevent intelligent life from existing?

We are yet to find another primitive carbon based life form. Anthropic principle works just fine with Occam's razor.

jankotek··on Huawei’s HarmonyOS is now open source
Github is often inaccessible in some countries. From memory I recall Iran, Russia, China and Turkey (US sanctions, hosting political stuff or bomb manuals). Less mainstream sites are bit more reliable.
