janejeon··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
I'm surprised people didn't mention this, but I find it to be unbeatable in these two areas:

1. Japanese community 2. Porn (good god, so much porn)

janejeon··on Anthropic tightens usage limits for Claude Code without telling users
> The worse it performs, the more you pay. That’s a hell of a business model. Will users tolerate that for long?

I mean, AWS seems to be doing fine with that business model.

janejeon··on xAI has acquired X, xAI now valued at $80B
Or, an (over)simplified way to put it:

"All money is made up, but some are more made up than others."

janejeon··on Is Ketamine Neurotoxic?
When it comes to things like this, as cliche as it may sound, your best bet is to probably bring up those fears with your psychiatrist to evaluate the pros/cons with them.

Like most things, there is most likely a tradeoff - but your doctor also most likely prescribed the dosages based on the pros outweighing the cons, but only you can bring up how you feel about specific cons to the doctor.

janejeon··on Altman: OpenAI not for sale, especially to competitor who is not able to beat us
I think of it more from the perspective that, there are likely people with far less material wealth than him who have achieved much greater heights happiness and lead a more fulfilling life.

All that wealth, power, and influence, and for what - if you can't even be happy about it?

janejeon··on The 'Return to Office' Lies
I don't mind the commute if I live close enough that I can just walk 30-40 minutes to the office, because then it serves as a good exercise (okay, fine. Grass-touching) that I don't have to do separately in the day.

But I realize that this is NOT a luxury most people have. Most people's commute looks like being stuck in the subway, or driving in traffic, for up to several hours every single day, and I just can't think of anything that would justify that type of commute.

janejeon··on New embedding models and API updates
I've honestly been surprised by how fast these "AIaaS" companies are competing to bring performance up and prices down. It really feels good to wake up the next morning to find out your stuff is better and cheaper automatically.
janejeon··on New embedding models and API updates
Is it just me or is the new embeddings model (v3 small) insanely cheap? It's coming out to be ~$0.02/mil tokens (if I'm mathing right), whereas other "embeddings API" services are typically charging at around $0.1/mil tokens
janejeon··on Open-source AI knowledge database with web UI and Enterprise SSO
Is it just me or is it kinda weird that a org mostly known for its AuthZ libraries is branching out into seemingly unrelated areas?
janejeon··on Welcome to Apache OpenDAL
This is really interesting. For a project I was building I figured out that having a sort of "universal access layer" for all types of storage was a requirement, and this looks like it's right up my alley.
janejeon··on Ego killed the empowered product team
I mean also just adapting to rapidly changing environment and requirement is hard. It's a skill, just like anything else. Best not assign reason to why others have trouble doing a thing (not just this) based on our own experiences (referring to "that's ego" bit).
janejeon··on How Gödel's proof works (2020)
I think for mathematics a good suspect is probably the Riemann hypothesis, which many other results rely on. We don't know that it's "undecidable", but from what I've read it's probably true and (even more interestingly), we can derive meaningful results from it being "probably"/"mostly" true (e.g. "for 99>% of cases it is true"), even without knowing that it is 100% decideably true.

Super fun stuff, though I'm not going to pretend I understand all of this (I mostly just gleam this stuff from what mathematicians say on Numberphile channel).

janejeon··on Skunk Works is all about getting to the prototype stage (2018)
For those interested in this topic, Ben Rich has a book of firsthand account called "Skunk Works" (this is mostly after the Kelly era). I personally found it to be a good read - a mix between government politics, the fight for funding, the culture of shipping, and what worked and what didn't.
janejeon··on Sam Altman is still trying to return as OpenAI CEO
The way I see it is, it's not going to matter if I "care" about it in one way/outcome or another, so I just focus my attention on 1. How this could affect me (for now, the team seems committed to keeping the APIs up and running) and 2. What lessons can I take away from this (some preliminary lessons, such as "take extra care with board selection" and "listen to the lawyers when they tell you to do a Delaware C Corp").

Otherwise, no use in getting invested in one outcome or another.

janejeon··on OpenAI staff threaten to quit unless board resigns
If the change in $MSFT pre-open market cap (which has given up its gains at the time of writing, but still) of hundreds of billions of dollars is anything to go by, shareholders probably see this as spending a dime to get a dollar.
janejeon··on OpenAI negotiations to reinstate Altman hit snag over board role
So the discussions are definitely happening it seems: https://twitter.com/sama/status/1726345564059832609
janejeon··on Terraform Cloud Pricing Changes Sticker Shock
This is a great point.

I get that companies want to price their products in a way that they don't leave surplus value on the table (i.e. the more value a customer gets out of it, the more expensive the product gets), but the fundamental problem is that it's... so hard to actually "judge" the value that's being created by using the product in many cases.

In such cases, probably for the best that companies err on the side of caution with some formula they're sure is below the actual value but isn't too far away.

janejeon··on Ousted OpenAI CEO Sam Altman reportedly planning new AI venture
I wonder if this is going to be like the SVB situation where a bunch of people are putting out fires behind the scenes over the weekend and then somehow on Monday we go back to business as usual (whatever that would mean for this specific case).
janejeon··on Update on the OpenAI drama: Altman and the board had till 5pm to reach a truce

janejeon··on OpenAI board in discussions with Sam Altman to return as CEO
Another good example he had brought up was with Arm China. Would love to see what he has to write about it on Monday's newsletter.
janejeon··on OpenAI board in discussions with Sam Altman to return as CEO
Experience heading a company that builds high performance AI, I presume. I reckon the learnings from that should be fairly valuable, especially since there's probably not many people who have such experiences.
janejeon··on OpenAI board in discussions with Sam Altman to return as CEO
Honestly would be super interested to see what a hypothetical "SamAI" corp would look like, and what they would bring to the table. More competition, but also, probably with less ideological disagreements to distract them from building AI/AGI.
janejeon··on OpenAI board in discussions with Sam Altman to return as CEO
You know what they say: "Life is stranger than fiction."
janejeon··on OpenAI board in discussions with Sam Altman to return as CEO
I mean, I don't see how anyone can expect him to come back after the public bridge burning and condemnation. I think it's reasonable to think that, if anyone were in his shoes, they, too, would feel too hurt/exasperated to go back to the people who caused all of... this to them.
janejeon··on Ilya Sutskever "at the center" of Altman firing?
Again, I'm not sure why you and the other person are just out for blood and keep trying to make it personal, but you can clearly feed it into NLP/ChatGPT and co and even the machines will tell you the actual wordings are aggressive.
janejeon··on Ilya Sutskever "at the center" of Altman firing?
> You are interpreting that as hostile and aggressive because you are reading into it

Uhh no, I'm seeing it as hostile and aggressive because the actual verbiage was hostile and aggressive, doubly so in the context of this being a formal corporate statement. You can pass the text into NLP sentiment analyzer and it too will come to the same conclusion.

It is also very telling that you are being very sarcastic and demeaning in your remarks as well to someone who wasn't even replying to you, which might explain why you might have seen the PR statement differently.

janejeon··on Ilya Sutskever "at the center" of Altman firing?
The wording is very clearly hostile and aggressive, especially for a formal statement, and the wording, again, makes it very clear that they are burning all bridges with Sam Altman, and it is very clear that 1. it was done extremely suddenly, 2. with very little notice or discussion with any other stakeholder (e.g. Microsoft being completely blindsided, not even waiting 30 minutes for the stock market to close, doing this shortly before Thanksgiving break, etc).

You don't really see any of this in most professional settings.
