janejeon··on OpenAI's board has fired Sam Altman
Oh boy, Matt Levine is going to have a busy weekend!
janejeon··on Casino-like apps have drained people of millions
> Gachas are, I think, basically identical

Which is why I thought the title was about gachas.

What I'm trying to point out here is that are extra digits in the amount of money people are losing. This is utterly insane and I'm having a hard time even understanding that number.

janejeon··on Casino-like apps have drained people of millions
Oh wow, just from the title I assumed it was talking about gachas (FGO/Genshin/etc), but no, the "apps" the article is talking about seem to be several orders of magnitudes worse ($100k+) than even gachas (where even fully whaling out on a banner costs you ~$2.5k).
janejeon··on Show HN: Ladder, open source alternative to 12ft.io and 1ft.io
Oh wow... I'm surprised that's enough. When I was researching scraping protection bypass, you had to do some real crazy stuff with the browser instance + using residential IPs at a minimum...
janejeon··on Show HN: Ladder, open source alternative to 12ft.io and 1ft.io
Really dummy question: how do services like this work? As in, how do they bypass these paywalls?

The obvious thing is to mock Googlebot, but site owners can check that the request isn't coming from a Google-published IP and see that it's a fake, right?

janejeon··on Ask HN: Making a better world, how important is that to you?
I do try to make a positive impact, but in the "leave things better than when you first encountered it" sense - I see no reason to worry about, or even be concerned with, "greater" things like "a better world", "a mass extinction event", or "humanity".

My "sphere of influence", and therefore my interest, is limited to the people and things I come across.

I may not be able to (nor care about) solve world hunger, but I can make sure my sister doesn't have to eat ramen and work three part-time jobs. I may not be able to solve the world's unending conflicts, but I can lend an ear to a friend who's undergoing some rough patch. I may not be able to solve climate change, but I can pick up the trash on the floor.

And, frankly, that's enough for me.

janejeon··on Podman Desktop v1.5 with Compose onboarding and enhanced Kubernetes pod data
We've been using podman compose for semi-production purposes at our company and that's been our experience as well. It's just... it's really rough, there are a ton of "known" issues, and it's rather unreliable. As a result, I've been really trying to push the "just use the docker daemon in prod instead" (to no avail... yet).
janejeon··on Last Chance to fix eIDAS: Secret EU law threatens Internet security
As someone else said, sounds like an interesting project to scrape, organize, and somehow "re-surface" that data in a much more accessible manner (how? I don't know; I've never done such a project before).

Obviously it should be said that such a project shouldn't be needed in the first place in an ideal world, but it does sound like something I might be interested in chipping in regardless (and a great learning opportunity).

janejeon··on Facebook and Instagram to Offer Subscription for No Ads in Europe
> completely insane right?

Not universally, it all depends on how one values the use/enjoyment/value that they get out of the experience, and everybody values their time/enjoyment/convenience differently.

janejeon··on Facebook and Instagram to Offer Subscription for No Ads in Europe
I think that no matter how people feel about the whole privacy/ad thing, it's an additional option... and I think everybody is better off having an additional option than not.
janejeon··on The WordPress 100 Year Plan
Oops, you're right. I'll be deleting the original post.

janejeon··on Duo Outage
Absolutely. For me, I don't think I would use anything other than 1PW/Yubikey for 2FA codes.

But not everyone uses such technologies, and a certain percentage of population is going to find the hurdle to adopt these technologies/apps too high.

So, not for us, but I understand why they do it.

janejeon··on Duo Outage
> selling into higher education

Just want to add another data point: Dartmouth was a relatively early adopter, and while a bit annoying, it chugged along just fine.

janejeon··on Mark Spitznagel says the ‘greatest credit bubble in human history’ is set to pop
Right, I'm wondering that as well, because one could argue that 1 & 2 is a necessary condition but not an automatic trigger. Something needs to actually cause the crash, and it's not always obvious that just because there is a bubble, there will be a trigger, hence the saying: "Markets can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent."
janejeon··on PayPal Launches U.S. Dollar Stablecoin
This seems like yet another ERC-20 stablecoin with no special "quirks", from a quick reading. My question is, what is the reason for this to exist over existing stablecoins that have much broader acceptance and long history (for crypto anyway), e.g. USDC/USDT?
janejeon··on PayPal Launches U.S. Dollar Stablecoin
USDT and USDC would be the two biggest examples by market cap, though USDT has been mired in... "controversies", and USDC almost got hit by the US Banking Panic this year,
janejeon··on Zoom terms now allow training AI on user content with no opt out
Unless you specifically enable E2E in meetings (which is NOT the default), it does seem like it?
janejeon··on Oral cancer drug kills 100% of tumors in vitro and in animal models
Now let's see Paul Allen's molecule.
janejeon··on Uber posts first quarterly net profit
Looking at rest of his comments in this thread, I think it's pretty clear that while he's half-joking, he does seriously believe that I'm somehow turning people into "racists".

Which is just... wat

janejeon··on Uber posts first quarterly net profit
> they persuaded them to be racists

Once again, please stop insinuating things that are a. untrue and b. you cannot possibly verify (were you in the uber rides with me?) just because of your preconceived notions and biases that you'd like to be true.

janejeon··on Uber posts first quarterly net profit
I'm not sure why you're so keen on "proving" that I'm "turning" people into racists. You have a fixed conclusion that you have already made, and are grasping at straws to reach that conclusion. Really bringing down the conversation for everybody here.

For what it's worth, I mostly just stare out the window in taxis/uber drives.

janejeon··on Uber posts first quarterly net profit
They're usually being racists to blacks and eastern europeans; I'm Asian so I had no bearing in it.
janejeon··on Uber posts first quarterly net profit
Every time I catch an Uber in London, the drivers for some reason always end up massive racists.
janejeon··on Llama 2
In the paper, I was able to find this:

> In addition to open-source models, we also compare Llama 2 70B results to closed-source models. As shown in Table 4, Llama 2 70B is close to GPT-3.5 (OpenAI, 2023) on MMLU and GSM8K, but there is a significant gap on coding benchmarks. Llama 2 70B results are on par or better than PaLM (540B) (Chowdhery et al., 2022) on almost all benchmarks. There is still a large gap in performance between Llama 2 70B and GPT-4 and PaLM-2-L.

janejeon··on It Took Me a Decade to Find the Perfect Personal Website Stack – Ghost+Fathom
I just self host Ghost, super easy. Don't even need analytics tbh.
janejeon··on Cloud Backed SQLite
Ah, I'm guessing that's the same reason why many "cloud storage as a backend" stuff (e.g. Terraform/Vault storage backends, Delta.io backends) require DynamodDB + S3
janejeon··on That Time I Posted Myself Out Of a Job
> nobody claiming to be a pony

The person above literally said "The pony IS her authentic self", word for word.

janejeon··on The court agrees that the HEROES Act does not authorize debt forgiveness
I'm arguing that the current rate is without the additional percentages that the insane risk premium that would be attached to these loans, if they were made at all.

> is already jacked

If you're arguing why it's not the same rate as treasuries, I'm not sure what more I can say. There's more that goes onto pricing loans than just the risk premium. It's a part of it, but not the whole story ("why are government-backed MBSes not the same interest rate as treasuries?").

Furthermore, just look around: you sure there's no "risk" with these loans? You cannot in honesty argue otherwise.

janejeon··on That Time I Posted Myself Out Of a Job
> The pony IS her authentic self

As a trans woman, I will pitch in and say this kind of stuff (from fringes of trans/queer community) is why we get hate crimed.

There's medical basis (decades of research and literature) for asserting that one's gender does not match their biological sex. There's not a DSM V criteria for being a pony.
