jamjamjamjamjam··on Show HN: Backlog – a public repository of real work problems
Im not signing up for that. For the world’s backlog you might want the world wide web to be able to read it.
jamjamjamjamjam··on How to write a great README
Putting a tracking pixel in a readme is a new one, wow. I would never want to clone that project in case I accidentally open the readme
jamjamjamjamjam··on Tricking Monty Hall
I honestly wouldn’t mind a goat.
jamjamjamjamjam··on You Need to Pay Your Engineers
What was the company from the last story?
jamjamjamjamjam··on Ask HN: How do tech companies gives permissions of repos to the new employee
Just use terraform github provider.
jamjamjamjamjam··on Passwordless Authentication on Github.com
I use a long pin on my yubikey
jamjamjamjamjam··on Microsoft wins FTC fight to buy Activision Blizzard
Thank you for this comment. I relate to every one of your points.

Especially the silent/forced updates. It can be SO bad in games. since the OP is about blizzard- look at hearthstone. Its a card game where you can’t trade, and the cards you sank money into can just get nerfed when the next expansion comes out. It amazes me this is acceptable to some.

jamjamjamjamjam··on Meta’s Microservice Architecture [pdf]
What are you monitoring your monolith for? For microservices you can monitor specific metrics related to the exact function, and perform health checks, scaling events accordingly.

For monoliths you cant be as specific. “Is the response a 500” doesn’t really cut it. “Average request latency” for scaling doesn’t cut it when some of your queries are reads and then some are completely unrelated mass joins.

jamjamjamjamjam··on New study reveals most classic video games are unavailable
As a consumer id just wait for indie games and smalltime books to become free. This ruins the demand and people have much less incentive to create. In general taking money away and giving it to a government is not a productive solution and definitely hinders creativity
jamjamjamjamjam··on Ask HN: Are Paywalls allowed to show Google crawler full content but not users?
Become a robot and enjoy the benefits no captcha and no paywalls
jamjamjamjamjam··on Ask HN: What would you do with a million dollars today?
As someone who shares this opinion, its refreshing to see this shared online. Many onlinr opinions state that hoarding is an end goal. but I agree its far more rewarding to give back when you have more than enough
jamjamjamjamjam··on Ask HN: Why aren't devs making desktop apps any more?
It always amazes me that reddit wants to completely ruin their product by forcing you to download an app which has no adult content.
jamjamjamjamjam··on Tell HN: Did you know you can negotiate price on many things?
I have to buy many online goods in USD with my devalued currency. Isn’t that the same?
jamjamjamjamjam··on Linux Perf Examples
Are there any real world examples?

This looks extremely useful but reading some of this still leaves me questioning how will I know when to reach for perf out of the toolbox

jamjamjamjamjam··on Each Firefox download has a unique identifier
Ive made the opposite switch, many sites were broken in brave (eg google docs, google sheets) and aren’t in firefox
jamjamjamjamjam··on Ask HN: Why can’t I run desktop Linux in my browser?
Don’t give the javascript guys ideas for a new framework
jamjamjamjamjam··on Which search engine is the least censored?
Yet here we are with no usable alternatives because competitors get crushed
jamjamjamjamjam··on Which search engine is the least censored?
Is deranking considered censorship? On what basis does RT need to be the top result?

Now of course I know its been purposely deranked. But couldn’t google claim its not censored if it exists but buried in results?

I want to know what legal basis we have for asserting certain sites must have the highest rank on google for certain searches. I’m assuming there isn’t one.

jamjamjamjamjam··on A non-standard book list for software developers
What calc books are those? Reading a calculus book is a massive investment because I will be rereading pages. So I’d like to find the best one first
jamjamjamjamjam··on What Google search isn’t showing you
I tried searching for kagi, and all I got was jewellery results. This is absolutely true
jamjamjamjamjam··on How to take credit for someone else's work on GitHub
The owner of huey does this. He closes PRs and submits the code himself
jamjamjamjamjam··on The Competitive Duality of Slay the Spire
If you dont track win rate how can you be elite? I would say jorbs is just a good for-fun player. its much harder to dismiss someone when results are there
jamjamjamjamjam··on 10 years ago the Feds shut down Megaupload
That’s some poor surveillance if it’s noticeable by ping increase
jamjamjamjamjam··on Year 2038 problem is still alive and well
Oh definitely. How long did python3 take? We’re still on ipv4. But lets chill. In 2038 I should be retired but I’ll return from my retirement and make bank
jamjamjamjamjam··on The Competitive Duality of Slay the Spire
Jorbs in TFA comes across has having a really fragile ego. If he’s so interested in competitive STS, why is he willfully ignoring lifecoachs results who are unmatched?
jamjamjamjamjam··on Google Drive users stung by macOS '.DS_Store' copyright infringement issue
No it is not
jamjamjamjamjam··on Google Drive users stung by macOS '.DS_Store' copyright infringement issue
Yes
jamjamjamjamjam··on Going IPv6 Only
Is it possible to get an allocation in ipv6? And what are the steps you’d take to do so?

Im interested in making my projects ipv6 only if I can have a long term address allocation which I cant do in ipv4

jamjamjamjamjam··on Ask HN: How to get boring once again?
A common problem. Ive been reclaiming my attention two ways. No push notifications except for trusted contacts via message/call. And the other side, choosing to read a chapter on my e-reader before social media. And social media is limited to useful dev subreddits and hackernews. I have basically no friends, so i must be pretty boring.

Ive deleted Facebook, instagram. I switched my email over to paid fastmail, use apple maps. If there was a way around apples walled garden I’d be happy (no pinephone where I am)

jamjamjamjamjam··on Logging at Twitter
It probably gave them a 7 figure discount
