jamiegreen··on ChatGPT-4 significantly increased performance of business consultants
Don’t underestimate the ass covering.

I recon 60% of management consulting work is just to ass cover for a director with no conviction

jamiegreen··on Longtermism poses a real threat to humanity
I wish there was less ad hominum in this article " group of highly privileged white men" and more depth on the actual counterarguments.
jamiegreen··on Successful room temperature ambient-pressure magnetic levitation of LK-99
Incredible it has taken this long
jamiegreen··on Did Airbnb kill the PM role?
I don't think it's revolutionary. They simply seem to have focused the role on what's important for them.
jamiegreen··on Did Airbnb kill the PM role?
I think it is nice to have a kitchen if it’s more than a few days.

But the chores are a bit much sometimes

jamiegreen··on Mercedes beats Tesla to autonomous driving in California
This seems more a problem in how this specific public transport is run, than with public transport in general.
jamiegreen··on What should you build?
Yeah I fully agree doing this is super hard in practice. If you want it, for sure that can be a great place to start!

Also, although “make something people want” is pretty simple, still people forget it all the time (Including me btw). So it’s as much a self reminder as anything!

Britain does have a constitution

The road deaths surprise me the most , as most American roads are big and straight and most British roads are small and squiggly!

If one company pays more voluntarily, it's unlikely the head of that company will remain there very long!
jamiegreen··on Best and worst decisions I’ve made
Same. Brush 3 times daily, never really floss. Not sure about the benefits, but my dentist doesn't complain. Then again, this is Britain.
jamiegreen··on Do heat pumps work in cold climates?
Does anyone know if they work in old houses?

We have a stone house built in ~1800. We have upgraded with insulation in the floors, walls ceiling, but of course it is still fairly draughty if it is windy.

It's damn expensive to heat, and have considered an air source heat pump, but always thought that it wasn't really a good idea for old houses.

jamiegreen··on Ask HN: How to navigate negative thoughts about starting a career late?
it really does
jamiegreen··on The number of banks willing to do business with the crypto industry is shrinking
I'm not sure if you are being intentionally condescending but you are coming across that way. I am going to assume good intention here.

I am not that familiar with the 'end use ' of paying for stuff directly, maybe you can't in Moldova.

Even if you can't pay for things directly, there are plenty of relevant uses. Simply using USDC can be a great store of value for people if their currency is collapsing. See lebanon, turkey, egypt, sri lanka etc.

Then if things get really bad, having some crypto could be very useful again if/when you have to flee the country. There are so many stories of Russians and Ukranians that left and were not able to take any of their currency. Here is just one example: https://www.cnbc.com/2022/03/23/ukrainian-flees-to-poland-wi...

Pointing out these real use cases is not 'harping on', in some cases this tech has saved people from terrible situations.

jamiegreen··on The number of banks willing to do business with the crypto industry is shrinking
It never mattered if you live in a country with a stable currency and access to modern financial services. If that is you, you are in a very small minority of the world population. For the rest of the world, there seems to be some value...

jamiegreen··on Illegal host, electric shocks, slugs, leaks and no support – How Airbnb failed
So much judgement in one post.

1. I am not saying the market/residents have to accommodate anything, I am simply stating my preference that if I have to travel for 5+ days I would rather have a full kitchen. If the residents don’t want to provide it, fine. If many other people feel as I do, then that’s kind of what markets are for.

2. I don’t typically take 2-4 week vacations, but I sometimes do travel for work for extended periods.

I recognise being able to travel at all is a privilege but having a personal preference for a full kitchen I don’t really think warrants such a judgemental response.

jamiegreen··on Illegal host, electric shocks, slugs, leaks and no support – How Airbnb failed
>You mean a hotel? Hotels are not inadequate for longer stays. If someone desires the comforts of a home, they can move there and actually rent/buy a home.

What about a middle ground. If I go somewhere for 2-4 weeks? For that length of time I kind of want a proper kitchen, which I won't get in a hotel, but obviously it is not long enough to actually rent/buy a home.

jamiegreen··on Train Travel in the UK: A Foreigner’s Perspective
I am surprised that anyone has anything good to say about Scotrail, yet it seems even their terrible service wasn't enough to dampen his sunny disposition.

Scotrail is terrible. Not one of the last ~6 services I have used has gone well.

My favourite example is when my train was cancelled due to 'weather'.

It was slightly raining.

Only Scotrail could be caught off-guard by rain in Scotland.

jamiegreen··on Is Stable Diffusion a big deal?
You are right, as you and @marc_io point out, I think there is a lot more to unpack here.

Thanks for the links to the doc as well, looks interesting, will have a watch!

jamiegreen··on Is Stable Diffusion a big deal?
Yes I tend to agree, especially to your point about the long term effects.

It is certainly an earthquake for visual artists!

Hey, author here! That's a great point, sloppy there on my part that I failed to notice that.
