jamesy0ung··on 27-year-old Apple iBooks can connect to Wi-Fi and download official updates
Apple’s EFI embeds an older version of wpa supplicant, possibly you are trying to connect to a network with a newer encryption standard like WPA3. I don’t that’s too unreasonable for a 15 year old computer
jamesy0ung··on We X-Rayed a Suspicious FTDI USB Cable
I doubt you are going to fit a chip fast enough to snoop Thunderbolt traffic inside of a usb-c plug
jamesy0ung··on Hands-On with Two Apple Network Server Prototype ROMs
Possibly off-topic, but for people that play with old UNIX operating systems, what do you run on the OS?
jamesy0ung··on I'll pass on your zoom call
Yeah I have to use Zoom for work, but I wrote a little script that installs it without the background services and privileged helper tools

jamesy0ung··on Can you slim macOS down?
> Why is Safari allowed to send me notifications begging the user to boot it up and try the new features?

For what it's worth I've been using macOS (and OS X) for 14 years, and you only get the notification once after a fresh install and you can click close and it's gone forever, sure Linux is better on this front, but I don't want to spend my whole life tinkering my os until it works. It's still a hell of a lot better than Microsoft consistently shoving Edge down your throat.

jamesy0ung··on The SD Association has an official SD card format utility [Win/OS X/Linux]
Amazing timing - I had it up in ghidra and stumbled on this comment through google!
jamesy0ung··on QEMU 10.1.0
Yeah I also found myself curious as to how KVM actually works, I found these helpful

jamesy0ung··on Raspberry Pi 5 Gets a MicroSD Express Hat
Raspbian works perfectly fine. Most of those other operating systems don’t really have the best GPIO support which is where Raspberry Pi shines. I’d just get a cheap mini pc if I wanted to run something else.
jamesy0ung··on Let's Upgrade a 2010 iMac – The Retro Millennial
I would not be relying on High Sierra, it's very out of date and probably has heaps of unpatched security flaws.
jamesy0ung··on USB-C hubs and my slow descent into madness (2021)
The charger included with the original Nintendo Switch charges my MacBook Pro at 40 watts.
jamesy0ung··on Young graduates are facing an employment crisis
As an Aussie computer science student, I do wonder what they are actually looking for. I know full well that uni isn’t teaching anything useful (heck my uni doesn’t even allow compsci students to take C programming) so I try and extend my knowledge by working on projects in my own time. Recently I’ve been getting into reverse engineering, before that I was writing my own shell from scratch in C. Is this good stuff to do job-wise?
jamesy0ung··on My Mac contacted 63 different Apple owned domains in an hour, while not is use
Apple is nowhere near as evil as Microsoft, so I’m willing to put up with it.
jamesy0ung··on Apple announces Foundation Models and Containerization frameworks, etc
Just let me have JIT! My jailbroken iPad Pro can emulate Wii at 4k without getting warm. Unfortunately you have to hack around enabling JIT on newer ios releases.
jamesy0ung··on OpenPOWER Foundation – Open-Source / Open Hardware PowerPC CPU ISA
What exactly is the selling point of the Power ISA? Why would I want to use it over RISC-V?
jamesy0ung··on Drawing power out of CCS port
This is the type of content I come to HN for. Thanks for the insights.
jamesy0ung··on Show HN: Lumier – Run macOS VMs in a Docker
I'm pretty sure the requirement is that the hardware is an Apple Mac, I don't remember macOS being your Hypervisor a requirement. ESXI supports running macOS on Apple Hardware (it extracts the key from the SMC).
jamesy0ung··on Google just changed its 'G' logo
The new blurred one hurts my eyes, it's a weird effect and I don't like it.
jamesy0ung··on Don't force your kids to do math
As someone who just finished school, I’m trying to figure out how to get genuinely interested in mathematics. I’ve never been particularly strong at it, yet I’m planning to enter a university program that demands a high level of math. The problem is, it’s hard to motivate myself to study math for its own sake. For example, I loved learning programming because it’s hands‑on—I can build something and immediately see the results. In everyday life, though, I rarely need more than basic arithmetic or simple sin/cos/tan trigonometry.

How do you develop a lasting interest in math when it doesn’t feel immediately useful?

jamesy0ung··on OpenAI Codex CLI: Lightweight coding agent that runs in your terminal
It's a real shame sandbox-exec is deprecated.
jamesy0ung··on How Big Is VMS?
Is there any reason to use VMS today other than for existing applications that cannot be migrated? I've heard its reliability is legendary, but I've never tried it myself. The 1 year licensed VM seems excessively annoying. Is it just old and esoteric, or does it still have practical use? At least with Linux, multiple vendors release and support distros and it is mainstream, whereas with VMS, you'd be stuck with VSI.
jamesy0ung··on Installing AIX PS/2 v1.3 on a 486
A gotek drive would be perfect for this. I got a clone on Aliexpress and loaded flashfloppy on it. You can then drop the 94 floppies on a usb and change them using the buttons on the device.
jamesy0ung··on Introduction to System Programming in Linux (Early Access)
Are there any good book that cover deep linux stuff like this? I'd like to learn some lower level stuff so I can maybe write some cool projects?
jamesy0ung··on Vibe Coding: A 20-Year Engineer's Love Letter and Warning
I hate the term vibe coding, its just a fancy way to say I'm getting AI to do it for me.
jamesy0ung··on My TV started playing a video in full screen by itself. What happened?
Just don't connect it to the internet and use an Apple TV instead.
jamesy0ung··on DIY Acoustic Camera using miniDSP UMA-16 (2021)
This is very cool, are there any other sorts of similarly cool projects?
jamesy0ung··on When you deleted /lib on Linux while still connected via SSH (2022)
This is the best comment I've read on Hacker News in a long time
jamesy0ung··on Amiga 600: From the Amiga No One Wanted to Retro Favorite
The Vampire is way overpriced and the extensions it adds are useless because they only work on other Vamprire machines. The PiStorm is much, much cheaper, and emulates a standard 68k while continuing to use the Amiga chipset.
jamesy0ung··on Tesla Used Car Price Crashes – Model Y, Model 3 Deals Explode
That is insane value for money, if you don't mind the stigma of owning a Tesla.

It seems like a used Tesla would be a better deal since most of the parts don't wear out and require maintenance like a petrol car. You can even check the status of the battery from service mode. Reddit seems to suggest high mileage Model 3's are pretty good in terms of reliability.

jamesy0ung··on Athena spacecraft declared dead after toppling over on moon
I'm a native English speaker and I think it's weird as well.
