jamespetercook··on Asana co-founder Dustin Moskovitz exclusive interview
Well yes, to your knowledge Rosenstein... Asana really isn’t that great. It offers no framework and very little structure in which to organise tasks.

I’ve worked at two companies that used Asana and it was a major source of frustration at both.

jamespetercook··on The tyranny of chairs: why we need better design
I don’t think I’ve ever found a chair that I felt completely comfortable in. I like to sit upright and feel alert and most chairs seem to be made for relaxing. I’ve always wondered if it’s just me or not, and have often thought about designing a chair but realistically I don’t have the skills :(
jamespetercook··on Apparent absence of covid transmission at hair salon with face covering policy
Does anyone have a good solution to stopping ones glasses from steaming up while wearing a mask? I enjoy being able to see when I’m walking in public
jamespetercook··on Ask HN: Thoughts on new GitHub layout?
> “ There are also legendary venues where obviously they were 'in the know'.”

Could you elaborate on this?

jamespetercook··on Ask HN: Which tools have made you a much better programmer?
Typescript - defining interfaces before doing any work is like visual planning. Adding it to old projects highlights a lot of unknown issues.

VSCode - right click a keyword > go to definition made me more comfortable navigating code written by other people.

jamespetercook··on Pinebook Pro Six Months In
How do you use vscode on your iPad Pro?
jamespetercook··on What computer and software is used by the Falcon 9? (2015)
“They use Chromium and JavaScript for the Dragon 2 flight interface.“

This is the most interesting part for me being a web dev! How likely do you think this is?

jamespetercook··on 10 years of Front end Development. I quit
If I understand correctly you can still do that, just the underlying component will be adding/removing a CSS class instead of injecting the actual styles. I usually use the classnames library to help with this but obviously not a requirement (https://www.npmjs.com/package/circular-dependency-plugin) I find it's also easier to test for the presence of css classnames based on the provided props than it is to test for the presence of mutiple style rules.
jamespetercook··on 10 years of Front end Development. I quit
The whole CSS in JS thing is so backwards. I use React a lot and I love it, but styles stay in a css file structured using BEM. It works.
jamespetercook··on Show HN: Personal finance guides to manage all aspects of your financial life
This feels a bit confusing to me (what should I be searching for?) and it does appear to require a signup to access any of the content:

"You need to log in to get the answer."

jamespetercook··on Ask HN: Any resource on how to repair MacBook logic board?
I recently repaired the logic board on my 2013 MacBook Air by baking it in the oven to reflow the solder. I thought I was being trolled when I first came across the advice on a forum but it worked! However the fix only lasted around 2 weeks before the issue came back and the laptop wouldn’t turn on anymore. Now I’m probably going to buy a second hand logic board off eBay and swap it out, they look to be selling for around £100
jamespetercook··on Ask HN: What website, from your early days on the net, do you miss?
Geocities, and all of my friends at school having their own website they’d update at lunchtime in the school library!
jamespetercook··on Show HN: Help Me Decide Please
Thanks for helping me decide what to do today on my birthday, during lockdown. Board games!
jamespetercook··on Ask HN: What do you know almost nobody else does?
Thanks! I remember discovering this in my college graphics class and showing everyone. We thought Apple were so cool :D
jamespetercook··on Apple acquires Dark Sky
I have an (unpopular) iOS app that consumes the Dark Sky API. Recently it hit number 7 in the weather category, despite only having had 2 downloads in the previous 23 days. I thought that was rather peculiar at the time and wondered if Apple had intervened somehow, for some reason I couldn't understand.
jamespetercook··on Ask HN: What's your latest failed side project and why?
Your mobile app looks really well done
jamespetercook··on What happens to a mail-order mattress after you return it
Wow I never thought about this
jamespetercook··on Show HN: SlothTracker – cross platform time tracking desktop app
I think you should tie the licence to major versions, and give people confidence that they will still receive updates for bug fixes and patches. But they’ll have to purchase a licence to get new features.
jamespetercook··on James Lovelock: 'I Would Not Waste My Fortune on Colonizing Mars'
It's not his only skill, but you have to admit he's pretty good at it. Just look at his twitter account.
jamespetercook··on Ask HN: What change in your programming technique has been most transformative?
Migrating from JavaScript to Typescript and declaring interfaces for classes and data structures forced me to put more thought into each piece before I start implementing. Now I’ve cleaned up a lot of old code I didn’t have much visibility over thanks to the compiler warnings.
jamespetercook··on Wait for User to Stop Typing, in JavaScript
Good point. Curious, does the server stop execution if you cancel a request? Or does the browser just discard the response when it receives it?
jamespetercook··on Wait for User to Stop Typing, in JavaScript
The immensely useful lodash library comes with a debounce utility you can use for this.

https://lodash.com/docs/4.17.15#debounce

import { debounce } from 'lodash';

input.addEventListener('keyup', debounce(handleInputChange, 1000));

jamespetercook··on I documented every surveillance camera on my way to work in New York City
It means "Your task is now complete, docile citizen. You may continue with your day."
jamespetercook··on Cards Against Humanity's Black Friday AI Challenge
The design of the website impressed me the most. Also the funnies.
jamespetercook··on Labour pledges free broadband for all homes and firms in UK
Would nationalising the broadband provider remove a barrier to increased surveillance?
jamespetercook··on Goodreads Is Broken
The design of your website blew me away. It’s brilliant.
jamespetercook··on Buffer: Bug in Login System

jamespetercook··on Facebook's '10 Year Challenge' Is Just a Harmless Meme–Right?
This seems more likely to be a marketing move to me than a covert request for AI training data. They’re struggling with engagement, so they seeded the 10 Year Challenge causing users to invoke the powerful emotion of nostalgia, made easy thanks to Facebook keeping all of your photos safe ;)
jamespetercook··on Can we go electric before it's too late?
Isn’t the issue to do with consumption of gasoline rather than production? Burning carbon based fuels releases large amounts of carbon, no matter how you’ve produced it
jamespetercook··on Meet the busser who’s worked at the same pancake house for 54 years

Is this their attempt at GDPR compliance?
