Could be that you have four councils: Dublin City Council, Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown, South Dublin, and Fingal
jamesdelaneyie··on Stripe valued at $159B, 2025 annual letter
In the EU and had to switch from Stripe to Mollie due to Stripe thinking the client was a cruise company because they rent 'cruiser' boats for river leisure. Mollie was super easy to implement for them, and fees much better

I didn't know /imagine could be followed by a prompt, but similarly I asked the avatar about it's appearance and stated it had none. Should probably give it the context of what it's appearance is like, same thing happened for questions like where are you? What are you holding? Who's that behind you? etc etc
jamesdelaneyie··on Intelligent people take longer to solve hard problems: study
Your goal during the ideation phase of those workshops should be to output as many post its as possible in the given time. Output the bad ideas quickly and you'll move along to better ideas much faster when you're not humming and hawing over one post it. You have to be ok with looking slightly crazy however and not mind being linked to your poor ideas.

jamesdelaneyie··on Web fonts, boy, I don't know
This is true, they don't understand how 5+ fonts make it hard to load and render. But they do care about bandied about stats like 83% of people will leave a site if it doesn't load in -0.3 milliseconds.
jamesdelaneyie··on Web fonts, boy, I don't know
>I absolutely do not understand the need for 'web fonts'. Just specify a normal font that most users already have installed in CSS, with some fallbacks.

I suppose some people are happy with color: red, while others like a bit more variety and opt for color: #a82a33.

jamesdelaneyie··on Most Germans don’t buy their homes, they rent
Rent increases can only be performed every two years in Ireland from Dec 2015. And you must have 90 days notice of a rent increase. More info on this link:

http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/housing/renting_a_home/...

The landlord's relatives issue is however the easiest way to get someone out of a property and increase rent.

jamesdelaneyie··on Ask HN: Where is the intersection between Art and Logic?
Low effort comment, but simply put: Design.
jamesdelaneyie··on Creativity is a great motivator
>I wasn't in trouble and I knew it.

A great feeling to have. I remember a similar teacher who could probably account for the death of ten trees every class with the reams of worksheets she'd hand out. Asked to speak to her before class to see if I could be moved as our 'teaching/learning' styles didn't link up. She refused to speak in private and insisted I spoke in front of another teacher she was chatting with at the time. Thanks, you've just given me an audience I thought. Was cheeky in the way I spoke, was sent to principal who was very straightforward in saying that this teacher was on her way out and his hands are tied to do anything about her. Asked me to apologize for the cheekiness (insincere apologies from teenagers? par for the course really) and then was happily moved to another class. But anyways, enjoyed that feeling of 'I know I'm not in trouble here'.

jamesdelaneyie··on What Happened to Google Maps?
Google maps also changes the zoom level to the nearest integer. You can't do 12.5 for example. When I change the 10 on the google maps link in your comment to 10.5, it rounds it back down to 10 and rewrites the URL. Have ran into the issue before doing custom maps for sites where 14.5 would be the perfect zoom level, but can only pick 14 or 15 :(
jamesdelaneyie··on Future Screens Are Mostly Blue
He recently spoke at OFFSET in Dublin and went through about 900 slides in 30 mins. Mad man. His early flash work was very cool to see as well.
jamesdelaneyie··on You Could Do Almost Anything Part 1
Interesting video. You might find this account of a debate (that happened the same year as that BBC doc) interesting as well. Roger participated in it. http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2009/mar/22/national...
jamesdelaneyie··on Ask HN: Should engineering jobs have a nap time?
I'd be looking at your diet and eating times if you're getting the '3 o'clock slump' and need a snooze during the day.
jamesdelaneyie··on Ask HN: What's going on at IBM?
Something not mentioned here is their 'big push' into Design Thinking. IBM have snapped up ~14+ of the graduates from my college course (Visual Communications, IADT, Dublin) flown them out to Austin for a 3 month starter course and now have quiet a substantial design department here in Ireland.

jamesdelaneyie··on What are your problems or need in your life
Someone keep this cat off my desk and lap somehow. Actually just desk. Lap is ok.
jamesdelaneyie··on Ask HN: Novelty addiction is ruining my life and career. What should I do?
>It worked best by "switching off the screen", i.e. typing without seeing what you type (either by literally switching off the screen, or by putting the font to same color as background

That's really interesting. Have written to get stuff out before but there is always the reading, writing, rereading, editing flow that kind of makes it a pain. Going to try 'switching off the screen' next time.

jamesdelaneyie··on Ask HN: Web development business workflow?
I invoice that as 'tech management' and charge an hourly rate for it. I would not put it in my portfolio but if the jobs goes well I would get a testimonial from the client.
jamesdelaneyie··on Ask HN: Web development business workflow?
1. Take who the client is, think about how much I like the job, how technically hard it is, how long I'd be at it and the deadline they want and a few other variables then pick a figure from the air that seems good.

2. Word of mouth or chatting to people in person.

3. Fuck no. Faster for me to build a custom site than to wrangle with someone's theme that's been built for the lowest common denominator.

4. A good SEO setup is included in the cost, but I don't write the headlines, meta desc, etc. If I am, that's extra.

Agency for 2 years, Freelance for about 5 in total.

jamesdelaneyie··on Ask HN: Free/Open-Source Invoicing Software?
definitely recommend waveapps.com in that case. Free plan and no limit on number of customers or invoices, does receipts and links to your bank account, pretty much everything you need as a sole trader it seems!
jamesdelaneyie··on Ask HN: Moving to Dublin without a CS degree
I would say you'll do fine. To start out, you might have to do what Dubliners call, "Nixers". That is to say, a cash in hand payment for a small touchup sort of job. Dublin has a pretty fertile tech ground and if you honestly and truely try to give more than half a shit, you'll do well enough when you meet enough people.

Definitely check the viability for legally having a job in Ireland as a Brazilian. I've met many Brazilians in Dublin, it does seem a popular destination. All very young too. Only tonight I was at a design talk and godblessthem, the only post to that Facebook event page was a very optimistic guy saying Hi and hoping to meet people at it.

No idea of your background. Is your girlfriend from the continent? Don't mind rand0mized too much. While his comments on transport infrastructure and housing costs are more than true, his ideaz about scammers and arrogance is most likely a communication breakdown of a thing called the craic ;)

Give us a shout if you move here and need a hand with anything. Best of luck!

I used to hate the whole shave kb off a file stuff (its 2015! we'll have superdooper speeds in 5 years!) until someone added up the hardware usage overall worldwide and it made a bit more sense. it made more sense when the crash bandicoot guys had that story about fitting the entire source code onto that cd with 4kb* left.

jamesdelaneyie··on Ask HN: Clothing for a lazy programmer
Do it! Theres a good few on eBay already so the market is there. I love and collect old-school tech company work shirts. Once literally bought the shirt off a guys back out one night because he had a nice DELL shirt. Offered him €10 for it and he took it and was immediately escorted off the premises for being topless.

Have about 6 so far and my most prized one is the red IBM shirt. IBM! RED! It's brilliant. Now, While I love them, the cut on these shirts is absolute crap. Fits grand on neck and wrist but is the poofiest thing everywhere else. You yanks! Would pay extra to have it cut to a better fit.

In terms of market, if you get the brand right you might be able to skirt both earnest tech-heads and the Vaporwave kids who like this kind of stuff: http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Japanese-Windows-Long-Sleeve-Tee-T-Sh...

jamesdelaneyie··on Indie Artist Struggles with Branding So You Don’t Have To
Hey, this is the pixel art renouncing guy. A large part of your brand is that you're obsessive over high quality artwork. You didn't rebrand either - you created new artwork, actually furthering the current brand. Most of what you're discussing is about creating a cohesive art style.
jamesdelaneyie··on UI Design Dos and Don'ts
would A/B testing, in some capacity, the decision in some form or another, help with this?
jamesdelaneyie··on PurifyCSS – Remove unused CSS
As a designer that would love this tool for the speed and cleanliness factor it would give, i have a few other Qs:

1. Does it spit out a css file or multiple css file I can use immediately? Can i actually amend a local document with it, or do I have to copy paste?

2. Does it give any critique on poor selector methods? Definitely have a few foolish ways of doing things that could be improved with a little bit of "hey...stop that" feedback, in my work

3. ??? PROFIIT

4. Can it give me a few stats on the css to benchmark it? You're already showing me the unused ccs selectors, can you present other data that you could present to your boss and say hey...look at this, this is why it's worth doing this stuff

5. Known browser issues highlighted. "Hey! In IE8...that div ACTUALLY does this". Also, heres how to fix it. Insta–contextual documentation. As I say that I realise I'm asking for Clippy back in a way so I shall bow out. Responsive design? worth thinking about...anyway!

Really interesting project! I'm going it use it this weekend and see how it goes :)
