jakeydus··on France targets Australia-style social media ban for children next year
Right, and the greed is preying on that attention. The users aren’t the greedy ones, the musks and the zucks and the tiks and the toks are.
jakeydus··on 2025: The Year in LLMs
How many people are employed at the average data center? A few dozen? Versus a steel mill, that’s nothing. A chicken plant in Nebraska closed down this last month. 3200 people lost their jobs. You think Meta will fill it with GPUs and the whole town will have jobs again?
jakeydus··on OpenAI's cash burn will be one of the big bubble questions of 2026
And reddit turned around and sold it all for a mess of pottage…
jakeydus··on Karpathy on Programming: “I've never felt this much behind”
Not OP, but I’ve spent months cleaning up sqlalchemy models that were written in isolation using AI. Project was just not scalable.
jakeydus··on Last Year on My Mac: Look Back in Disbelief
I was specifically referring to ads for third party applications in the start menu, so you’re technically correct and I should have been more specific. I’d argue that those are upsells for the OS to enhance existing apps and systems. Not my favorite, but preferable to windows telling me to install candy crush in the start menu.
jakeydus··on Last Year on My Mac: Look Back in Disbelief
Oh I 100% agree, but what consumer-grade Dell comes with Linux out of the box?
jakeydus··on Last Year on My Mac: Look Back in Disbelief
> a new Dell isn’t that bloated.

At least a new Mac doesn’t try to serve you ads in the app launcher.

jakeydus··on Toys with the highest play-time and lowest clean-up-time
I never thought of playing make believe as just being the dm for kids but that’s really fun.
jakeydus··on Texas is suing all of the big TV makers for spying on what you watch
I believe unifi offers aggregated dns logs ootb but you could always set up more detailed ones on the gateway itself.
jakeydus··on Ford kills the All-Electric F-150
I think it's still simpler, actually. IME the most complicated part of an ICE vehicle is the power delivery system. Transmissions are nightmares to work on. Making that all-electric and just using an engine to generate power significantly simplifies the system. I'm not a mechanic though, so take my word with a grain of salt.
jakeydus··on “Super secure” messaging app leaks everyone's phone number
Obligatory Colin Jost Pete Hegseth warrior ethos post: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZb1WO1_lGI
jakeydus··on AI agents are starting to eat SaaS
God I hope my bank isn't using agents to build things. "Sorry, Grok misplaced your retirement funds."
jakeydus··on Avoid UUID Version 4 Primary Keys in Postgres
I'm not making any claims at all, I was just adding context from my recollection of the article that appeared to be missing from the conversation.

Edit: What the article said: > The kinds of web applications I’m thinking of with this post are monolithic web apps, with Postgres as their primary OLTP database.

So you are correct that this does not disqualify distributed databases.

jakeydus··on Avoid UUID Version 4 Primary Keys in Postgres
I'm new to the security side of things; I can understand that leaking any information about the backend is no bueno, but why specifically is table size an issue?
jakeydus··on Avoid UUID Version 4 Primary Keys in Postgres
The author doesn't reference any tests that they themselves ran, but they did link a cybertec article [0] with some benchmarks.

jakeydus··on Avoid UUID Version 4 Primary Keys in Postgres
I think they address this in the article when they say that this advice is specific to monolithic applications, but I may be misremembering (I skimmed).
jakeydus··on AI should only run as fast as we can catch up
> It's just aggravating to see someone write "totally undeniable" when the thing is trivially denied.

You've described AI hype bros in a nutshell, I think.

jakeydus··on The AI wildfire is coming. it's going to be painful and healthy
I think that is it happening is an important question, but “does the consumer actually want it to happen” should be equally important. It won’t be, because the c suite will just make the decision for us all, but it ought to be.
jakeydus··on The AI wildfire is coming. it's going to be painful and healthy
You forgot the italics on Y
jakeydus··on What the heck is going on at Apple?
Also the rumor I heard from a friend at Apple (hearsay, obviously, and an anecdote to boot) was that Alan Dye was pretty unpopular among designers.
jakeydus··on How elites could shape mass preferences as AI reduces persuasion costs
Also, legally, in the United States corporations are people.
jakeydus··on Advent of Sysadmin 2025
> If you just do any of this […], some senior in the org will complain and you will lose.

More accurate statement imo.

jakeydus··on Advent of Code 2025
I think I’ll set up a local leaderboard with friends this year. I was never going to make it to the global board anyway but it is sad to see it go away.
jakeydus··on Laptops with Stickers
And yet here you are, signaling to others your uniqueness by saying how much you hate the way that they signal theirs. It's not that deep, man. This sounds like a really tough way to live and I genuinely wish you the best of luck with your vendetta against *checks notes* people expressing themselves with stickers on their laptops.
jakeydus··on Laptops with Stickers
I legitimately do not understand this kind of behavior. A: "I have an excellent example that clearly illustrates my point." B: "Great, what is it?" A: "Uhm, if you don't already know, then you're stupid. You can easily find it anywhere."

We're gatekeeping evidence that supports our claims now?

jakeydus··on Laptops with Stickers
I'll be honest I think that dying on the hill of "putting stickers on your laptop [...] is the least authentic thing for a software developer to do" makes you look pretty ridiculous.
jakeydus··on Laptops with Stickers
Yeah, OP's username seems pretty appropriate
jakeydus··on Laptops with Stickers
I think that on its face the term "sacred knowledge" kind of communicates an intimacy that indicates that it's not something that's shared with people who don't have a privileged relationship with you.

I think the big difference now is that people have a megaphone in the form of social media and they forget just how wide the statements they shout through it can spread.

jakeydus··on FFmpeg to Google: Fund us or stop sending bugs
Yeah it's more effort, but I'd argue that security through obscurity is a super naive approach. I'm not on Google's side here, but so much infrastructure is "secured" by gatekeeping knowledge.
