jahmed··on Something New in Garage Doors
Ahhh that makes perfect sense. Thanks for the explanation.
jahmed··on Something New in Garage Doors
I was interested by this but couldn't find anything about single piece doors being illegal. Being from California I've lived in a few places where these types of doors are common.

No this is like buying Photoshop and Adobe saying you can't let your friend come over and use it without paying for a new license.

I paid for the data. There is no difference if I use the data request comes from my mobile device or if it comes from my laptop connected to my mobile device.

Price discrimination is not a god given right nor is it criminal (usually) to avoid. (I can't think of a case where avoiding price discrimination is criminal, but I'm sure there is)

jahmed··on How Gangs Took Over Prisons
I took Kaminski's Game Theory And Politics class and he lends the material an absolutely fascinating perspective. One of my favorite undergraduate courses and I got an A..
jahmed··on Senate Judiciary chairman urges PACER to restore access to removed case archives
Ha okay I understand. But you cut off the important bit:

As a consequence of this real life illiteracy, these outsiders have no clue what a triumph these systems are from a variety of perspectives such as internal management of cases to external judicial transparency. The will and skill necessary to convince the internal stakeholders (judges and lawyers) to adopt the concept of these systems (to let go of paper) and then construct a dual public/internal system with few glitches is a major milestone in the annals of good government.* This was a truly a monumental achievement. For my money, PACER and CM/ECF should be here to stay despite the present debacle.

RGK understands that this is technically pretty straightforward but going in guns blazing will not endear you to an Article 3 judge. At the end of the day you are replaceable, they aren't.

jahmed··on Shedding Light on the FISC: Court Findings from Our 2007-2008 Case
It would be interesting how this would get reported in their 10Q and 10K. Either way investors would question what this odd charge is about. Id say take the hit and report it in a subtle but not so subtle way. It would almost act as a warrant canary.
jahmed··on Chromecast Rooted
I believe the Android Popcorn Time app already has Chromecast support.
jahmed··on First-Person Hyper-lapse Videos
I walked around Boston once with some friends for 7 hours. When I remember it I see it as the hyperlapse, not moment for moment or sped up. Super interesting work.

Sure did. Can't edit anymore though.
jahmed··on The US Intelligence Community has a Third Leaker
Obama is a stasist. You have to be to be President. He believes in central authority and respect for the chain of command. What he is saying is you should blow the whistle inside the designated structure. When the structure says everything is fine then everything is fine. If the structure says you're right good job, only then do you get a pat on the back.

You don't get to be POTUS by being an anarchist or thinking everyone has equally valid opinions as you. Anyone can be President, but only a few people actually think they should be President.

jahmed··on Study: Half of black males, 40% of white males arrested by age 23
Sure but that not the most useful aspect of this. If you are out past curfew and underage you've committed a crime. The police officer has a specific and arcticuble reason to perform a terry stop and search you. If they find something illegal on you that's a bonus but now you're trapped. Its an easy way to establish probable cause and gain compliance.

Even better is looking young and driving past curfew. Again this is the kind of thing officer will use for a PC stop. Sure you're 20 but the officer doesn't know than until you've been stopped and provided license, registration, and proof of insurance.

Seriously this is awesome. Its magical. No wires no configuration. I just got home, tried it, and it worked.

Wow. I always thought SAP stood for Spanish Audio Program. TIL.
jahmed··on Halluxwater: NSA Exploit of the Day
While I certainly understand the idea that reporters should avoid disclosing sources and methods there are two things that warrant further consideration. First Bruce Schneier as a security researcher has knowledge of a vulnerability. A vulnerability is a vulnerability and this is one we know at least one actor is exploiting. He has a responsibility to report this. This takes me to what I think is the most interesting part of this whole Snowden situation. We now know with certainty that everything can be subverted. All those theoretical and academic ideas are being actively exploited by at least one actor. If we assume NSA as the high watermark its only a matter of time before less resourced nations and well resourced or placed companies start doing the same. Now that we know roughly the price to surveil the world I don't know how we ever put that back in the box.
jahmed··on Federal Government Begins First Shutdown In 17 Years
Your first point is true in idealized situations. There are many circumstances which contribute to the benefit of incumbents. Regulatory capture, first-mover advantage, cartels, price collusion, asymmetric information are just a few tools inefficient incumbents use against new efficient competitors.

Your example of waste, power, and water are a few cases where people, I think, support the government granted monopoly status. These industries have huge fixed costs and generate large externalities. Reliable waste management is a communal concern with clear risks to public health. I'd rather not have the trash company decide my neighborhood is too far to service weekly and switches to monthly pickup.

Government exists as a function of the people to balance externalities. Does it go to far sometimes? Sure. But when people are actively engaged though government can be a force for good.

jahmed··on Choosing Hong Kong Is a Brilliant Move by Edward Snowden
Hong Kong also does not have a CIA/NSA/GCHQ/MI-6/MSS type agency. Your statement make me think Snowden saw the level of cooperation on the intel side and picked someone without a horse in the race.

This is a perfect example of emoticons clarifying tone. Way to go people. :)
jahmed··on Google has killed Android (the brand)
Google undercut Apple. Google couldn't let Apple take all of mobile because that's where computing is going. No one was even close to where Apple was then and its taken android years to catch up. Thats the first reason.

Second, Google is a team player. The web is more profitable for everyone when things are open and free. Everyone is better off with a smaller slice of a bigger pie. Android has made a lot of people a lot of money.

jahmed··on The Chromebook Pixel
Why wouldn't that future come? Considering Phase I of the GSM specifications was only published in 1990 we've gone pretty far.

This is an aspirational device. They should give a few away in Kansas city. Im sure it would be beautiful with Google fiber.

jahmed··on It is cheaper to fly to US than buy Adobe software in Australia
I've always thought first-sale doctrine is an interesting and important check on price discrimination. People usually get angry with the concept of price discrimination, it seems to grate at the idea of fairness. Poorly or improperly implemented price discrimination coupled with a strong first-sale doctrine will lead to interesting new arbitrage opportunities.

The pending case of Kirtsaeng v. John Wiley & Sons, Inc is a good example of arbitrageur vs price discriminator. The result of witch will be really important.

>Its a multinational corporation beholden to its stock holders.

Larry, Sergei, and Eric own almost all Class B shares which have 10 votes each. They control about 65% of the voting shares. So really the rest of the stockholders are just along for the ride. Google is really in this for the long game.
