jahmed··on US Air Force connects 1,760 Playstation 3's to build supercomputer (2010)
Lots of products. Its called Tariff Engineering https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tariff_engineering.

Probably the best known example is Converse. "The felt lining on the bottom of the sneakers allows Converse to classify their product as slippers, so the company benefits from a much lower tariff rate." https://blogs.pugetsound.edu/econ/2019/02/18/tariff-engineer...

jahmed··on Three Arrows Capital has defaulted on a loan worth more than $670M
Should have just bought a monorail.
jahmed··on DoorDash will require all employees to deliver goods
This made me think a little more. When people talk about "dogfooding" they usually mean using a product as an end user, the consumer or customer. Who is the customer of doordash? The drivers are a supplier. How often do companies try to make the life of their supplies better?

What's good for Walmart might not overlap with what's good for the supply chain.

jahmed··on Why printers add secret tracking dots (2020)
What exactly does "audit" mean to you?

Ballots typically do have unique IDs usually on some part that is removed by the voter. The problem is that isn't linked to anything because we don't want it linked to anything. This form of auditing isn't compatible with ballot secrecy. US elections do undergo rigorous process audits but the electorial process presents challenges to results audits.

jahmed··on Emmanuel Macron identified in leaked Pegasus project data
This sounds like the ransomware services which prevent installation when Cyrillic keyboards are detected.

jahmed··on What is ranked-choice voting and why is New York using it?
If you don't represent the views of the voters you won't win.

Another way to say it is "if you're not of the society, you will be outcast and blockaded from any chance of winning."

jahmed··on Google Play service fee reduced to 15% for the first $1M/year
I get the sarcasm but really its a duopoly game like a Stackleberg. The best move is to match and not try to undercut.
jahmed··on Electricity over $900/MWh in most of Western US now
I was curious and I pay 11¢ in Colorado.
jahmed··on Boeing quietly pulls plug on the 747, closing era of jumbo jets
I'm so happy my last flight was on a 747. It's truly stunning if you haven't flown on one before.

I also had the pleasure of visiting the C17 plant in Long Beach. Blew. My. Mind.

jahmed··on Colleges are turning students’ phones into surveillance machines
Ahhhh now I get it. It's so rare for institutions to do internal projects like this I didn't even consider it to be anything but a commercial revenue extraction machine.
jahmed··on Colleges are turning students’ phones into surveillance machines
I think you answered your own question and I'd be right there with you.
jahmed··on Colleges are turning students’ phones into surveillance machines
That's great, thanks.

I get frustrated as a technical staff person, who personally enjoys being on the cutting edge, often being the one in meetings saying 'data is great but how will we actually use it?'.

Honestly, I'll probably retire form higher ed in a few years and go work for an outfit like yours.

jahmed··on Colleges are turning students’ phones into surveillance machines
Students used to (still) take the iClickers (https://www.iclicker.com/) for other students to answer questions in large lectures.

I work in higher ed. I wouldn't say admin are douchebags, they are just under pressure and responding with a solution. For various reasons schools are under pressure to increase student success which is measured by retention, persistence, graduation rates among others. These systems help "teach to the test" if you will. They are pitched in slick presentations with complex statistics with dubious claims to non-technical staff who are poorly versed but like many high-level managers, smarter than their own good.

These systems are often pitched as turnkey solutions with very little input from the people on the ground who are expected to support and triage incidents in a system where training is thin if it even exists.

If, before you send your kids off to college, you look at college rankings then you're just as culpable in the use of these metric boosting systems.

jahmed··on Colleges are turning students’ phones into surveillance machines
I work in higher ed and we use a student success analytics platform. Where I see this going wrong is administrators want a system to do everything. We want to identify the at-risk student, nudge them automatically, and have a successful outcome. Schools don't want to invest in people to actually make outreach or connection with students because that is hard. As a result, we generate a ton of data with little to show other than numbers.

I'd be very curious to learn about your LMS usage project. Are you saying you identified at-risk students quickly enough to intervene at a point in the term where it made a difference between passing and failing and that the school successfully intervened in those cases?

jahmed··on Strava heatmap can be used to locate military bases
Also easily spotted are military outposts littered across North Africa.
jahmed··on Why not just a simple spreadsheet of salaries?
True, very true.

I'm part of a University system pension scheme that, while operating with a sizable unfunded liability, is fairly stable and has a good outlook. In the end there is a risk but it's difficult to quantify looking out 35 years in the future. I do know better than to take it as a 100% and have eggs in other baskets as well.

jahmed··on Why not just a simple spreadsheet of salaries?
Yeah as a state employee my pay looks low compared to what some of my peers make. When you factor in benefits and 14% in pension contributions not to mention good culture and work-life balance I come out the same (if not ahead IMHO).
jahmed··on U.S. Says It May Not Need Apple’s Help to Unlock iPhone
Yup this would have been a continuation of Scalia's majority opinions like Jones, Kyllo, and Jardines.

Also his dissent in Hamdi v. Rumsfeld was and will be fantastically important.

jahmed··on NPR decides it won’t promote its podcasts or NPR One on air
Ha yeah. I know NPR One you don't need to remind me that I'm listening to NPR One constantly.
jahmed··on How Hackers Stole $100M from the New York Fed
I read it every day. If only to contextualize the other news sources I read. FWIW I throw in some infowars when something big happens so I can see how certain segments will try to spin something.

Yeah it's Alphabet's site. You play by their rules. Don't like it? Well there's always other options.
jahmed··on Sorry to burst your bubble
Some of the latest polling data shows Trump at or leading Bush. If anything, Republican primary voters will really respond to his rhetoric. They eat up the Only True Conservative vs RINOs narrative.

jahmed··on BPA alternative disrupts normal brain-cell growth, study says
Agreed, I'm a happy modern human that isn't particularly worried about potential harms from chemicals or GMOs. I do though use baking soda and vinegar for my hair and its so much better than using shampoo and conditioner. Aggressively stripping oil from your hair and then putting it back didn't make sense once I learned about it.

I'm curious about this http://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/25/magazine/my-no-soap-no-sha... but not nearly brave enough.
