jahller··on Nike exits the S&P 100 after 18 years and a $200B market-cap wipeout
Nike actually had a good run with the Air Max in that segment, but as someone already said: trends are fickle
jahller··on Nike exits the S&P 100 after 18 years and a $200B market-cap wipeout
yeah, i dont think the quality of the shoes were ultimately the problem. consumers care more for trends than quality.
jahller··on Nike exits the S&P 100 after 18 years and a $200B market-cap wipeout
yes, but people will only pay up to a certain price for a sneaker if they are not collectors and only consumers. and as we now see, a shoe business is not running that well, if it mainly caters to resellers and collectors.

i can remember a few instances about 5 years ago when I was really interested in a nike shoe "drop", but didnt win in the shoe lottery to purchase the show. the result? i just stopped looking at Nikes completely.

I think they should continue pushing ACG as a standalone apparal brand. they have good designs and could compete with The North Face and Patagonia in the streetwear/outdoor market
jahller··on Nike exits the S&P 100 after 18 years and a $200B market-cap wipeout
it's really interesting how Nikes style of shoes became unfashionable in the past 5-6 years. is it their focus on basketball and fitness shoes?
jahller··on Nike exits the S&P 100 after 18 years and a $200B market-cap wipeout
totally. some brands really made a huge step-up and became "fresh", which Nike declined and is now considered "stale". From my euro-centric perspective I see Autry, New Balance, Adidas and Asics all over the place. Even Reebok had a revival. Basketball and skateboarding shoes fell out of style and now everyone trends towards running or indoor soccer style shoes.
jahller··on PISA 2025 Students' reading and mathematics performance declined across the OECD
100%, does it matter if I cleanup the mess of another dev or of an AI? I don't think so.
jahller··on Advertise in ChatGPT
I like that sentiment and fully agree regarding YouTube. Unlike Facebook, it's still possible to tune your feed to your exact interests. I have never had a better experience with any video medium, neither linear TV, nor streaming, than I have with YouTube right now.
jahller··on macOS needs its grid back
you really underestimate the will of people to not change anything that annoys them about their OS. they will click 1 million times a popup away before even considering that it could be resolved indefinitely by an option change. i think Apple's system works well to keep the average user safe.
jahller··on Norway's 2 petabytes of Huawei flash storage and LLM training
> If you ask in French, it searches in French, right?

not necessarily. i often prompt Claude in German and then see the reasoning happening in English. of course it will eventually reply in German, but that does not mean that the tooling in the background was using German.

jahller··on Claude Platform on AWS
how so? the data stays with Anthropic
jahller··on Claude Platform on AWS
it's mostly about procurement. a lot of companies use AWS IAM for single sign on in a multitude of services.
jahller··on Advancing human gut microbiota research by considering gut transit time (2023)
that's the most insane thing i read today. kudos to your curiosity
jahller··on MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max
looks like this will be their angle for the whole agentic AI topic
jahller··on US plans online portal to bypass content bans in Europe and elsewhere
yeah, i'm calling bullshit. unless this person tries to surf the russian web or get behind the great firewall of china.
jahller··on Europe’s next-generation weather satellite sends back first images
definitely worth a visit. loved the exhibition about the Atacama desert telescopes. especially great for kids.
jahller··on Europe’s next-generation weather satellite sends back first images
nice find. so you need a client_id to access the API
jahller··on Floppy disks turn out to be the greatest TV remote for kids
they read it, understood it and then applied every way possible to game our attention span
jahller··on The struggle of resizing windows on macOS Tahoe
the esc key is still there. i'm still using the m1 macbook pro with the touchbar.
jahller··on Accepting US car standards would risk European lives
i'm always suprised by the amount of SUVs on Dutch highways. in that regard you are not that different to us Germans.
jahller··on Pepsi: Breathtaking Design Strategy (2008) [pdf]
you missed a chance here by using "pepsimistic"

jahller··on Tolkien's Paintings
to anyone that is interested in Tolkiens drawings and especially calagraphie I can really recommend his book "Letters from Father Christmas"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Father_Christmas_Letters

it contains letters he wrote to his children posing as "Father Christmas" for them.

jahller··on Mercedes to accept legal responsibility for a vehicle when Drive Pilot is active
exactly. Steer assisting and active safety features are standard features for every upper class car you buy today.
jahller··on Peloton – A call for action [pdf]
they obviously want to get a good ROI on their stock holdings and try to convince potential buyers that the company is amazing and just held back by their CEO (which definitely is not the only problem that Peloton has)
jahller··on Hayao Miyazaki prepares to cast one last spell
"healing" might be the most fitting description I could come up with as well for the effect his movies have on me. there is just something very special about his depiction of the world via animation. and if you look at his story boards you will also immediately notice that it's truly his vision which drives these movies and makes them so special. it's no reproducible. truly one-of-a-kind and a generational talent.

jahller··on Show HN: 40k HN comments mentioning books, extracted using deep learning
Completely agree. It's always nice to give back to the community, but nobody will bat an eye if you cover your costs.
jahller··on What's Wrong with Tech Hiring
on top of that you will also filter out applicants who show some red flags when they not immediately know the answer to a problem. it's absolutely okay to not know everything. but there is a huge difference in how people communicate their lack of knowledge.
jahller··on Every engineer should do a stint in consulting
This is probably also down to your character. When I was working as a consultant for a big SaaS company I felt like the occupation really attracts a certain type of overly confident people who also like the attention. I'm 100% sure that everybody there had these blank spots in their knowledge which would potentially result in feeling stressed or dishonest when talking to the customer. Some people are just better selling their blank spots.
