jacobriis··on Ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional, Sapporo High Court rules
Talk about your cultural bubbles.

The historicity of "same sex unions" of Roman emperors (Nero, Elagabalus) is debated. These claims may have been recorded to discredit those emperors.

There was no legal recognition of same sex marriages or unions in ancient Rome.

jacobriis··on California's fast food law exempts Panera Gov. Newsom's relationship
"Stack said lawyers for the governor’s office determined that Panera doesn’t meet the standard for a business that “produces” bread “for sale on the establishment’s premises” because “many chain bakeries (such as Panera Bread) mix dough at centralized off-site locations and then ship that dough to their retail locations for baking and sale.”

1. They are claiming that because Panera generally mixes dough at central locations that they don't "produce" bread by baking it at the retail locations. It is not clear that this was their original intent and not a recently invented rationalization to obscure the connection to Panera.

2. The lawmakers that are calling for an investigation into the deal aren't the same lawmakers that write the deal are they?

3. The governor can obviously influence legislation including but not limited to his power to veto it.

Guys can we keep quite about this please. Yesterday the party line was it was outrageous to suggest a company could keep money in more than one bank and or in treasuries. Have you no empathy?
jacobriis··on Joint statement by the Department of the Treasury, Federal Reserve, and FDIC
"Putting your series A check into a fucking bank isn’t a risky financial strategy."

You still think that's true? Clearly it is a risk. And that risk can and should be managed. Even now!

There is no law that says the FDIC has to pay uninsured depositors of the next failed bank.

What if you banked with one of the last several failed banks that no one heard of or cared about?

You think no companies split their funds among several banks and short-term US treasury instruments?

Those companies didn't worry about closing this weekend.

Is the problem that the photo is cropped from a woman who is nude or that the woman is beautiful or that a photo of a woman would be used at all?

I watched the documentary produced by the campaign Losing Lena (https://www.facebook.com/codelikeagirlau/videos/985614161797...) here are the complaints:

1) Female student says high school students made jokes about the photo and made her feel that women were made to be a joke

2) Female researcher says when the photo goes up on a screen "everyone laughs.... well not everyone"

3) Female math professor says the photo symbolizes the role women played in technology: "beautiful young woman in the photograph not the one doing the coding"

jacobriis··on Ask HN: I Need to Talk to Someone
As those links state, to enlist in the military he would need to be a lawful permanent resident and in that case he wouldn't need to enlist in the military.

And if his wife were a permanent resident, he would also qualify to be a permanent resident and again not need to enlist in the military.

jacobriis··on Ask HN: I Need to Talk to Someone
I'm not sure how posting a bunch of links that say you have to be a lawful permanent resident support your case that you don't have to be a lawful permanent resident. You think this guy just accidentally forgot he's a lawful permanent resident and got a H1B?

No there isn't a way for an H1B to join the military. Try the French Foreign Legion. Also Ukraine and Russia are hiring.

jacobriis··on Ask HN: I Need to Talk to Someone
You can't join the military as a non-immigrant alien except for very narrow circumstances [1] for people who have had valid visa status for two years and have specific language skills [2] or medical qualifications. Requires 4 years of active duty for language candidates.

edit: Actually it looks like this program was suspended years ago and hasn't resumed.

jacobriis··on Hundreds of changes made to latest editions of Roald Dahl's books
"That comment is just saying you can understand the changes empathetically"

That's not what they mean when they say empathy. They misuse empathy when they mean compassion.

I think they do it because even they understand it's indecent to say they pity all of these people.

empathy: The ability to identify with or understand another's situation or feelings

compassion: Deep awareness of the suffering of another accompanied by the wish to relieve it.

The comment you "called out": "Just use a water bottle like the rest of us! I lived out of an Explorer for 3 months, not once did an adult diaper cross my mind."

I love how you're pedantically rationalizing "calling them out" on this one word "just" and ignoring the subject is people living in their vehicles (for 3 months in the case of the comment you "called out" and indefinitely in the case of the original blog post).

First of all, just can be used to mean several things aside from simply [1]. When used in an imperative cause as it is the comment that triggered you, it is more correct to interpret it as being used for emphasis. Consider this exchange: "I pee in diapers.", "Just don't do that."

So you were really just (Just meaning ‘only’ [1]) triggered by your poor understanding of the use of this word.

But there's more. Even if the comment used just meaning simply, you are still wrong.

Everyone is talking about habitual practices including and especially the comment you "called out."

Instead of habitually using adult diapers, habitually just (meaning simply) using a bottle is easy. Acquiring a suitably sized funnel from an auto, hardware or outdoor store for people who live in their cars who clearly have transportation, have a lot of time on their hands and frequent these stores anyway is an insignificant consideration.

There is no bottle related sex inequity to fight here.

And why do you, as a former LGBTQI+ director, keep referring to funnel-using-persons as women or wives? Tisk tisk. Thankfully what you say is representative of your own viewpoints and beliefs and not those of your employer! Maybe someone should call you out!

"The grandparent comment makes it seem like it's easy for half the population to pee in a bottle and I called them out on it."

Funnels of various sizes readily available in every hardware and auto parts store. Also these specific funnels are readily available in outdoors and sporting stores. It is easy to find funnels. No need to defend "half the population" by "calling them out on it."
