jacknobody··on The Silicon Valley elite who want to build a city from scratch
The country you seek is called Heaven. I don't blame you for recognising the need - I'm the same. Sadly many of our companions would rather see themselves in charge, just to make sure everyone is treated justly of course, but that always causes Hell for somebody.
jacknobody··on Ask HN: Possible to go/live underground to cool off?
Post-apocalyptic citizens will get hungry too, although heat death isn't the usual apocalyptic scenario.
jacknobody··on Ask HN: Is an online forum with all signal and zero noise possible?
First, you must define signal and noise. That is a very big problem.
jacknobody··on Is there no longer a reason to learn a foreign language?
In New Zealand we seem to find that our 2 languages, English and Te Reo Maori, each have their uses. English is good for lots of stuff but Te Reo is where we find our connection to the land.

A few learn Sanskrit, which is said to be the language of mystics.

jacknobody··on Ask HN: How many books have you started reading and sure you will continue?
J M Coetzee, Diary of a Bad Year.

You could try this at the public library.

jacknobody··on Ask HN: Possible to go/live underground to cool off?
Ancient humans are thought by some researchers to have done much the same. The deep underground artworks in some French caves are said to be evidence of humans escaping the cold.

There's a reason I can think of that it might not work so well again. Lots of non-human animals survived the cold quite well, so there was game for those ancient ancestors to hunt, but there might be much less game surviving in great heat.

jacknobody··on When should a post be flagged?
Thank you. Having read some guidelines, I had wondered whether my comment that I had flagged was the problem.

Now I'm sure what not to do, I'll be very pleased not to do it.

jacknobody··on Ask HN: Have you ever been hired without an interview?
Only once, and the hirer had worked with me before.

jacknobody··on Migraine headaches: What are they and how do you treat them?
I discovered a way to avoid the pain by withdrawing my attention from part of my gut. I've been doing that for more than 50 years. I still get the auras, and I tried going back to paying attention in the difficult part of my gut as an experiment recently... there is days of pain if I want it. Shudder.
jacknobody··on Writing about what you learn pushes you to understand topics better
I always wanted to be able to teach what I'm learning, so from the beginning of learning about a new topic is try and rephrase the information I receive and place it within the world I already understand. It's not so easy, but after years thinking about e.g. algebra I've become a good teacher.
jacknobody··on Schlitterbahn Water Park Accident Nr Kansas City
Wow,this world...

Is it really true that people will do anything?

jacknobody··on Coffee Kick Calculator – How Much Caffeine to Drink to Stay Alert?
I cannot believe that alertness comes out of a coffee cup.

I like coffee too, but drugs are unreliable attention modulators, compared to good food, plenty of rest, and a worthwhile goal.

jacknobody··on The Trouble with Trigonometry
This article on promotes slang maths!

I like slang, too, but I doubt that slang mathematics would be much good for the kinds of subtlety I've seen used in limit theorems.

jacknobody··on Accidental Discovery of Ancient Organisms We Never Knew Existed [video]
According to the linked content, life on the Earth was once powered by sulphur. That's pretty wonderful news in itself, but I suspect that the exobiologists will feel much encouraged.

I wonder why, over a billion years of this Sulphur Age, no large creatures have been found?

jacknobody··on Does the latest measurement of the muon hint at new physics?
Is the latest discovery in the nano scale a reflection of the latest discovery on the cosmic scale - that the ideas we have about gravity might need review?
jacknobody··on Thousands of Felines Die of Coronavirus in Cyprus, Vets Turn to Human Drugs
Cats have doctors amongst them, just as people do. Cyprian cat doctors and scientists can now reassure the world's felines that their formulations have been tested on humans.
jacknobody··on Dramatic rise in cancer in people under 50
Quackery?

"Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology" isn't usually quackery is it?

I think that a Journal of Medical Science, specialising in Oncology, might have something worthwhile to say.

jacknobody··on Why people do not use their real name in HN?
I dream of discovering such a resonant and cogent truth that, like a seed crystal in a prepared solution, it gathers more and more truth about it...

Failing that great ideal, my words must stand for themselves, at least.

jacknobody··on a
What about a humble letter, uncomplainingly explaining your situation, asking for help. If this is refused (unlikely if I were to write such a letter) you might see if the professional association would be help. Either way you'll have to be nice.

PS sometimes you can strike a case where the person who is supposed to do the work gets a huff going or something and will not help whatever. Sometimes you can ask a lawyer (? your country) to make the request on your behalf, which is likely to evoke a response.

jacknobody··on Why are railroads 4'8 1/2" in the US?
I've heard that in mountain country narrow tracks allow tighter curves to be laid, so that twisting paths can be taken, whereas on the plains wide tracks are laid to let lots of goods travel fast.

The nature of the country indirectly defines the required track gauge.

jacknobody··on Ask HN: Why is facial recognition failing at recognizing persons of color?
Many dark-skinned people believe that technology is in the control of white, racist actors.

Who can prove otherwise?

jacknobody··on Has America Given Up on Its Future?
In individuals, lack of hope for the future is said to be an element of diagnosis of clinical depression.
jacknobody··on Do you avoid the news? You’re in growing company
All news is bad, because human beings find happy stories to be uninteresting.

Many stories told for entertainment describe tension and release, but very few describe paradise. The difference might be, that the news lately has been all about increasing tension, and nothing much about the release, or resolution, of that tension.

We need good news, especially about topics like Fukushima, and the war in Ukraine, for examples. Good news on other topics can't cancel that lack of good news.

jacknobody··on Suicidal. Thoughts?
Tell us that you're going to be ok!
jacknobody··on Suicidal. Thoughts?
My youngest brother built himself a special suicide shotgun after hours at work. That was 30 years ago.

You might as well understand that the reason lots of people in your life didn't go the same way us because they didn't want to hurt you. Return the favour!

You now know how people feel. Everyone can feel like that.

If anybody in this whole world is ever going to be happy it'll be because somebody got over their shit and decided that they wanted to be part of the solution.

Be part of the solution. There are wonderful rewards.

jacknobody··on The Alexander Piano
At the end, a link to a Chopin mazurka, beautifully played on the homemade piano.
jacknobody··on Ahead of Time: On Poetry and Mourning
I thought this was good :)

I stood on the porch tonight— which way do we

face to talk to the dead? I thought of the

new rose, and went out over the

grey lawn— things really

have no color at night. I descended

the stone steps, as if to the place where one

speaks to the dead. The rose stood

half-uncurled, glowing white in the

black air. Later I remembered

your birthday. You would have been ninety and getting

roses from me. Are the dead there

if we do not speak to them? When I came to see you

you were always sitting quietly in the chair,

not knitting, because of the arthritis,

not reading, because of the blindness,

just sitting. I never knew how you

did it or what you were thinking. Now I

sometimes sit on the porch, waiting,

trying to feel you there like the color of the

flowers in the dark
