jackmott42··on Oil sector is lobbying for inefficient hydrogen cars to delay electrification
>we don’t have infrastructure to charge them at the required scale.

Yeah we do, or to be more precise, we are having no trouble expanding the infrastructure at the same rate people are buying the cars.

jackmott42··on Samsung expected to report 80% profit plunge as losses mount at chip business
I read the headline and thought "still making a profit! sweet!"
jackmott42··on Oh-My-God Particle
As the article states, it was observed again eventually.
jackmott42··on Press Reviews of the AMD Ryzen 7040 Framework Laptop 13
in principle sure, but I don't think anyone offers such a thing, and it may not be possible to improve on what is in there much.

you could do things like replace the thermal paste with liquid metal etc which may help, and that is easier on a framework than other pcs.

jackmott42··on Press Reviews of the AMD Ryzen 7040 Framework Laptop 13
On the bright side as it gets old, it will be easy to clean out the fan or re-do the thermal paste on the Framework!

We have the first gen framework and while we haven't noticed any fan noise issue, its used to write a novel mostly, so we wouldn't be heating it up anyway.

jackmott42··on Review: Framework Laptop finally gets an AMD Ryzen config–and it’s pretty good
I own a framework, one of the early ones from launch. All of the ports are working. My SSD has no problems, and the hinge has been fine for us, but they upgraded it after launch so newer ones should be better.
jackmott42··on UltraRAM
I would buy RAM yearly for 10x latency improvement!
jackmott42··on Americans Are Still Spending Like There’s No Tomorrow
We aren't buying more stuff, stuff is just more expensive.
jackmott42··on Americans Saved $1.1T Less Than Previously Thought from 2017-2022
I don't understand the last sentence, can you expound on what you mean?
jackmott42··on Rimac unveils SineStack, battery energy storage system
They have been building and selling automotive electric systems for posche/audi/ferrari and others for years, and have released their own super car. What are you talking about?
jackmott42··on India fails to re-establish communication with its Moon probe
They didn't last 14 days or try to survive the lunar night, and we spent a rather large % of our GDP on the project, while India's landing was an order of magnitude cheaper than any previous moon lander.
jackmott42··on Learn Rust by building real-world examples
100% it is really well done, fun leetcode problems that get gradually harder.
jackmott42··on Article reply “Godot is not the new Unity” from Juan Linietsky (BDFL of Godot)
In the context of function parameters at the edge of C# and c++ I don't think it will ever amount to a large amount of memory being wasted. The cache point may be relevant, but generally if you are calling into C++ in tight loops from your scripting language in a game you have already screwed up. So maybe not so bad.
jackmott42··on Circles do not exist
If you play the game Quake 3 Arena, which was, I think, the first game to use bezier curves in 3d rendering, so that a column or arch could dynamically adjust how many polygons are used depending on view distance, the columns are visibly not round!

Not something most people notice unless they are looking for it.

jackmott42··on The anatomy of a Godot API call
If you use C# then you can use Visual Studio or Rider or VSCode and get that
jackmott42··on Ozempic Can Cause Major Loss of Muscle Mass and Reduce Bone Density
Evidence is mixed on weight lifting and bone density. Some studies see no benefit at all. The idea that it is "crucial" isn't supported by any evidence at all. Most people have bone density that is fine without any weight lifting.

On the other hand the evidence on running and bone density is very consistent.

jackmott42··on Ozempic Can Cause Major Loss of Muscle Mass and Reduce Bone Density
I don't understand why your first claim supports the second. I agree obese people are very muscular. But since you won't need so much muscle and bone when you weigh less, why is it important to exercise any more than it is generally?
jackmott42··on Ozempic Can Cause Major Loss of Muscle Mass and Reduce Bone Density
That would be expected if you stop eating too much also.
jackmott42··on Memory-efficient enum arrays in Zig
C++ has an ages old tried and tested ecosystem for game stuff which probably makes a lot of rendering and audio tasks easier. It could take Rust years to catch up even supposing the language is inherently better.
jackmott42··on Should I Rust or Should I Go?
This is about how to determine what is more fit for what you are doing.
jackmott42··on Should I Rust or Should I Go?
This is usually a very simple decision. Do you need the performance of Rust? If not, use Go (or Java or F# or C# or whatever GC language you prefer)
jackmott42··on Unity’s new pricing: A wake-up call on the importance of open source
Any product can end up no longer having work done on it, or the work can start getting bad. Such is life. With open source at least you have an option, if you run into one bug or missing feature, there is a chance you can patch it yourself and get the game done. In the distant past I wanted to use Unity and ran into a breaking bug in the particle system that wasn't fixed for at least 2 years, if ever.
jackmott42··on High-Tech Cars Might Be More Trouble Than They’re Worth
None of this has anything to do with EVs in particular. All of this stuff is on ICE cars too.
jackmott42··on NASA says distant exoplanet could have rare water ocean, possible hint of life
Data is open, you can check. Hell you can even propose your own time slot of webb if you want.
jackmott42··on Superbatteries will transform the performance of EVs
The energy density of the battery cells in the first leaf was the same as the chevy bolt today (to close approximation). The cost just got cheaper so they could add more.
jackmott42··on Half of Glaciers Vanish with 1.5 Degrees of Warming
Well since my kids will die with that attitude, I have to say you are a horrible person.
jackmott42··on Half of Glaciers Vanish with 1.5 Degrees of Warming
These are standard talking points that people parrot and both of them are misleading. There did exist a global cooling idea and it was in some pop sci magazines, but it was never a serious prediction by the climate change community. Even in back in the 1970s we had a pretty good idea how much warming would result from adding co2 into the atmosphere:

https://theconversation.com/40-years-ago-scientists-predicte...

To your second point, predicting the total heat of the Earth is also easier than predicting what the weather will be at one spot on the globe in any given moment. The former has only a few inputs (the sun) and outputs (back to space!) But how that heat swirls around in the atmosphere and moves to and from the oceans is pretty complicated.

jackmott42··on FAA closes SpaceX Starship mishap investigation
which lie are you referring to specifically?
jackmott42··on Bletchley Park codebreaker Margaret Betts has died
I don't like how much it alters the real history, but if the movie was fun for anyone, get some good books about the same events and you are in for even more fun! It wasn't just "Break the code, done" in real life, there was back and forth math and engineering battles, it was great stuff.
jackmott42··on Bletchley Park codebreaker Margaret Betts has died
Turing talking all weird was also not real, but him being good at running was, in fact he was maybe olympian potential in that era.
