jabbernotty··on Raspberry Pi Hosting
> What do you need?

> ...

> 2 A configured static IP adres

So, I know what a static IP address is, but I'm wondering how one 'gets' one. I'm wondering what they mean here.

jabbernotty··on Raspberry Pi Hosting
I'd like to highlight his post on the Broadcom SoC hardware watchdog, I'm glad I found that. It is something I can really use but I didn't know that was possible.

jabbernotty··on Ouya’s $99 Android-based video game console finally hits store shelves
I presume they are referring to the summer, a time when people traditionally plan a holiday.
jabbernotty··on Don't Look for Talent, Find People Who Do Things
That isn't the same as "a person who doesn't do much of anything".

I think it's more in the spirit of "what hobbies do you have" / "what kind of activities do you like".

jabbernotty··on Naomi Wolf: My Creeping Concern That The NSA Leaker Is Not Who He Purports To Be
I was hoping to find a well-reasoned story here, but it isn't there. I don't find her reasoning to be logical, and she keeps calling things strange or abnormal based on either a single anecdote, or none at all.
jabbernotty··on [dead]
This isn't a bug, though. I've been using this since I got that precious invite oh so many moons ago.

You can log in to that other account yourself, with your own password. You'll find that you have logged into your own account rather than anyone else's.

jabbernotty··on Submit a Privacy Act Request with the NSA to see what info they have on you
It doesn't really seem to matter where you live, if the government of the USA decides that it doesn't like you.
jabbernotty··on Using Metadata to Find Paul Revere
> but it's naive to think (as was the primary lesson in "The Wire") that the power they have will lead them astray...

Is this what you meant to say? I must admit, I had expected

"but it's naive to think (as was the primary lesson in "The Wire") that the power they have will not lead them astray..."

jabbernotty··on 22 American nuclear bombs are stored in The Netherlands
Who exactly would be less liable?

The Netherlands is a country with a very high concentration of people. I would think that one of the desert-like places in the USA would be a better storage space (assuming the intent is indeed just to store them).

jabbernotty··on Greenwald has "highly detailed technical NSA materials on how they eavesdrop"
Maybe you are right, and he doesn't care about US interests.

But even then, he probably cares about people being killed.

jabbernotty··on Introducing ClusterFsck: Filebased S3 Configuration Kontrol
Is this based on Amazon S3 because you have that at hand, or is it based on it because of some innate advantage?
jabbernotty··on Assange in 2011: "They have automated the process."
> Second: that kind of thinking could be a nice way to "motivate" the creation of alternative products out side of the us of a.

> Third: but how realistic are such endeavors in today's world?

It is entirely possible to develop a product outside of the US of A. And it does indeed happen.

Geez!

jabbernotty··on How to Leak to the Press
Use a letter stencil? One of those plastic stencils.
jabbernotty··on Are coders worth it?
Those are some really broad brush strokes.
jabbernotty··on Where the Jobs Are in “Who Is Hiring” (June 2013)
I am certainly interested to see that my own country does appear in 'HN Who Is Hiring'. I didn't think it did.
jabbernotty··on Docker : An Interview With Solomon Hykes
I'm not entirely clear on this yet, but it sounds like it could be very useful for load-testing a particular service I'm working on. Testing the service requires a series of directories to be present for each client. It sounds like this docker+busybox combination could be used for this.
jabbernotty··on Startup advice
What is he talking about? He isn't talking about a saying like "stubborn as a mule", is he?
jabbernotty··on Poll: Full-time software engineers in London, what's your annual salary?
I assume a Dutch software engineer would not have problems living and working in London? I'm currently living in a remote area that I really like, but it feals a bit 'dead'. I'm yearning to get back in to a more action-packed working environment.
jabbernotty··on Solitary in Iran Nearly Broke Me. Then I Went Inside America's Prisons
Some of what you mentioned here, if not most, seems specific to the USA, from my western European point of view. Do you know of any explanation for that?
jabbernotty··on Blekko suddenly became really good looking.
I do not know how the page used to look. But I think, given the 'nestedness' of the information they want to display, this is not a bad way to go about it. To make things feel a bit less cluttered, I would make the category buttons an equal width.

(I'm confused as to why a seach on 'lama' doesn't give the animal category)

jabbernotty··on Sass Style Guide
I thought sass and scss were the same thing.
jabbernotty··on Ask HN: How are engineering skill and tech-interview skills related?
There are many different kinds of pressure. I don't always handle 'interview pressure' well (depends on the job and interview), but in most positions that is unlikely to tell you anything about my performance during the actual job. Unless you are hiring me to do short-term placements at clients.
jabbernotty··on The Magic of the Brain Dump
Ah, thanks, I didn't know that about Evernote. I've not used Evernote myself because I tend to use Linux, but I'm definitely going to try it with Wine.
jabbernotty··on The Magic of the Brain Dump
I often have thoughts that I want to write down, while I am at work. Because I am at work (not at home) I often don't write them down.

Because of that I'm thinking of developing a 'brain dump' service, that you can send an email to. You would host it on your own device. The service will read it's inbox and add messages from authorized senders to a plain-text repository, and offer the most simple things like login, listing and search functionality.

jabbernotty··on Java developer says he built, launched basic open source office suite in 30 days
It is not in any sense a 'fork' (did you mean clone?) of MS Office. It has a different use case and long-term goal. This I have concluded from reading the article.
jabbernotty··on 98% of VCs Aren’t Dumb
Offtopic, but I am wondering why you are overloading the word 'operator' in such a confusing fashion.
jabbernotty··on The Mozilla Manifesto
Rust seems more like a tool, a means to an end, rather than a product.
jabbernotty··on Four Steps to Google, Without a Degree
If you have focused, for about ten years or more, on working as a Software Engineer...

you probably want to be a Software Engineer, and not a designer, personal assistant, or any other role.

You seem to view that as a restriction cast upon them by their degree(s). I say that they probably really like being a software engineer.

jabbernotty··on The Art of Finding Anyone’s Email Addresses
Apart from "the right thing", one might see this particular behaviour as "quite polite".

It is also better for the relationship. It signifies trust. And every time you hold something back (or lie) you risk damaging a relationship. In this instance, a recruiter might reach out to the employee some other way. The recruiter and employee would then figure out that the business owner may have withheld the mail, even though it was clearly addressed to the employee.
