j_crick··on Ask HN: After 3 years of crypto trading, how to return to the normal job market?
Sounds like you spent a lot of time sitting at a table before displays. I’m not sure doing more of that for another 40 hours a week would be good for your brain or health.

Hence I want to suggest you launch a solo small scale software consultancy, or together with a friend or two, just to keep some coin inflow. It’s hard but not entirely impossible. Don’t lose SWE skills, keep up with the new tech. Solve small problems for moderate coin and maybe fun, maybe help some friends with their IT problems, learn at your own pace.

And in your free time go seriously touch some real grass. Learn how to bake good bread, brew beer, gardening, how to play a music instrument, perfumery, woodworking, whatever physical, concrete. If you have a restless curious brain, it might find the amount of nuance in guitar building (or guitar pedal building) quite fascinating.

In other words, get real physical. When, after some time of learning and struggles, you hold in your hands something that’s awesome and that was made by you, it feels goddamn amazing. And with a fat account balance and freedom to do what you want it feels even better.

j_crick··on Insomnia REST client now requires an account
- Market yourself up as a Postman alternative

- Work for some time

- Do the same shit as Postman

- ...

- Profit? Really?

I don’t know even. Why does it have to be the same story all the time? It’s become so tiring.

j_crick··on Ask HN: Tech that seems to have vanished?
Delphi 5-7 was such a boon to anybody picking up Pascal in school. Still remember that feeling of discovering that you can drop controls on a form, write some spaghetti to make them work together, and bam! you can make a real windowed application all while being 14. Nostalgie…
j_crick··on Ruby's hash is a Swiss-army knife
It should be noted that ** operator works like .merge, and also accounts for the order of key definition in a given hash declaration (whatever is declared earlier gets overwritten if a key with same name is used in the same hash declaration later).

And it supports lots of stuff and just seamlessly works in the background. And it has neat detailed options for custom shortcuts on any buttons and scrolling tweaking. It helped me a lot with many mice setups along the years.

j_crick··on Signal walks the line between anarchism and pragmatism
Yeah, any discussion of anonymity and Signal can start and end with phone numbers. They could maybe offer an option to use just a username and some kind of authentication? But somehow they don’t :(
j_crick··on About Dave on Design
Yes, but then maybe some thought should be put by author into lists behavior around them on devices that aren’t phones? Just maybe...
j_crick··on About Dave on Design
The way paragraphs and lists are wrapped around big letters doesn’t look like beautiful typography to me: https://imgur.com/Yc7pkss unless it is trolling and I can’t comprehend tongue-in-cheek humour there. Well, anyway...
j_crick··on Who cares about the Ivy League?
I don’t know why this was flagged, because to me it rings very true. I’m from a different country but I have been on the receiving end of poverty and teachers who at least tried to give a damn about their pupils, and some tutors too. At some point I was very surprised to learn that being not fucked up by life and having a teacher who gives a shit can work wonders on you, if circumstances allow.

It’s all about incentives and availability of resources, time and attention. When life gives too many shit lemons to both students and teachers, there’s no breathing room left for any of them to care a little bit more about any taught subject. When teachers are overburdened and children not supported by their environments, they just want to get rid of each other ASAP, and then it’s on parents to berate their kids for not wanting to study because whatever reason.

But if you can unburden both a teacher and a student from hardships of life even just a little bit, somehow a lot of attention and time free up to care about any subject, and explore it in different directions, not necessarily by what’s included in curriculum. Suddenly learning about something and practicing it can be actually fun.

Fun and joy of exploring stuff is so important yet so missing. Having some not even too fat stacks of cash can help with that drastically.

j_crick··on Vectors are the new JSON in PostgreSQL
But then once in a while you have this one client with a task that can be solved easily with something like postgis, and you rejoice, and praise gods and developers and things, and drink beer happily ever after to their health, and add tasty sauces to your dinner potatoes.
j_crick··on Vectors are the new JSON in PostgreSQL
Years go by, and I, a simple webdev basement dweller, just can’t stop looking at Postgres and think once in a while: “man, what can’t this thing do?”

(Of course it can’t do a lot of things, but the stuff that’s baked into it already or can be enabled by some extensions is simply amazing)

j_crick··on CNN Chairman and CEO Chris Licht Is Out
And here’s this NYT article, which may suggest, even just a little bit, that the Atlantic piece could be a hit job:

> Mr. Zucker’s criticism has rankled executives of Warner Bros. Discovery, which owns CNN, according to people familiar with their thinking. They suspect Mr. Zucker has leaked unflattering information about the network’s operations to the press.

j_crick··on What happened after I left my software engineering career (2022)
> assuming burnout and maximizing our personal returns should be standard career advice

I think it should. I also think that the whole self care stuff, mindfulness etc included, should also be based not around helping you to cope with your pressure, but maximizing personal returns and avoiding cumulative stress in the first place.

I don’t know what that would mean in practice specifically, but I definitely wish I encountered the message about prioritizing yourself over your mission more often in the media and in attitudes of people (unless we’re talking about extremes like special forces etc). “You don’t get to your destination by breaking your car” sort of thing.

j_crick··on Dark Matter Developers: The Unseen 99% (2012)
You’re accusing the comment author of something they didn’t commit. How perceiving condescension in a given paragraph of text is having “a dislike of the author” and “projecting”? If you didn’t detect something that somebody else felt, how does that invalidate somebody else’s opinions or feelings?
j_crick··on Maybe you should store passwords in plaintext
You’d be surprised at the amount of people in, say, Europe, who don’t identify with their daytime jobs in the ways some Americans do. The mindset I’m talking about is something along the line of that there’s actual life outside work, and your job is used to pay for it, and that’s about it. In some societies it can be even perceived as rude and selfish if you’re trying to push and be competitive.

No accountability is coming, and they are certainly not afraid, after all it’s their monopoly on power and not yours. Dogs keep pushing your boundaries until you resist, so do other people, and any government machine is no different. They are not fragile at all. They do it simply because they can and also for the reason that the accountability is nowhere near. If you can impose more control on the population that won’t resist it while being on their payroll, then, after all, why not?
