j2bax··on Statement on US government directive to suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5
Nothing makes people want something more than telling them they can’t have it! My guess is they will start charging even more for it and make you sign a contract for access in the near future. The genius PR continues!
j2bax··on New iPad Air, powered by M4
It's insane to me that Apple TV has this feature and iPad still doesn't.
j2bax··on OpenClaw is changing my life
Very likely part of their bots output. The ultimate goal isn’t to make useful things, but to “teach” others how to do it and convince them how successful they can become.
j2bax··on Charlie Kirk killed at event in Utah
Violet, you're turning violet!
j2bax··on Ozempic shows anti-aging effects in trial
I thought Martin Luther's issue was more with the organization selling indulgences than the undeserving buying them. He preached justification by faith alone. Not some org selling justification.
j2bax··on TikTok goes dark in the US
No it’s fine to spy on US citizens as long as we (NSA) have the access and control that we want to the greater world population data. They aren’t okay with China taking that role/opportunity from them.
j2bax··on Nintendo announces the Switch 2 [video]
I'm a huge Nintendo/Mario fan but I've recently been playing through Astro Bot on my PS5 and I must say, when you combine super fun mechanics with amazing graphics and performance, it's quite an experience! But there isn't nearly enough content like this on the non-Nintendo consoles, so point is definitely not lost on me.
j2bax··on Mysterious New Jersey drone sightings prompt call for 'state of emergency'
With a fixed wing drone of your own of course!
j2bax··on U.S. chip revival plan chooses sites
What makes Boise a more readily available target for China?
j2bax··on Apple is turning The Oregon Trail into a movie
Loved this series. I watched it before starting Yellowstone and it stands on its own very well.
j2bax··on Canvas is a new way to write and code with ChatGPT
It's a bit creepy when the ratio is 2 to 1 or more and/or a significant age difference of the male to female attendees...
j2bax··on A $1k Wheelchair
I switched to an Apple Trackpad and it basically cured my wrist issues that I was experiencing.
j2bax··on The best $4 ever spent
I can agree that I wouldn't want to see this type of content take over HN... and I don't think it would. But a little sprinkled in seems fine.
j2bax··on The best $4 ever spent
Maybe a little bit of humanity and feel good is just what HN needs! These computers and software and such are after all for... humans mostly.
j2bax··on Amazon Sold a Used Diaper. It Tanked a Mom-and-Pop Business
Wow! That's dedication! You should at least start a Youtube Channel with the content. There are probably some odd folks out there that would enjoy watching that. Add a condenser microphone for some ASMR hits!
j2bax··on NOFX to retire after final tour without ever having had a job
It hasn't exactly been a clean path. Fat Mike has been on and off through the years and they never stopped singing about doing drugs. That said I think they are vegetarians and otherwise relatively health conscious.
j2bax··on Cement recycling method could help solve one of the big climate challenges
Is there a reason they couldn't just reuse the same steel over and over just to process the cement at scale?
j2bax··on Ask HN: What non-AI products are you working on?
Awesome! Makes me think of this song: https://youtu.be/4s0KidJf5FQ?si=H56SCAivnsU6jy6W
j2bax··on Vision Pro: What we got wrong at Oculus that Apple got right
My opinion, and its very naive because I've only really tried the Vision Pro for this type of content, but immersive video is the current killer app for the Vision Pro. Sitting in the studio with Alicia Keys warming up for her tour was almost equal parts uncomfortable and amazing.
j2bax··on Airbnb's Devastating Effect on Canadian Housing
Tourism is the ONLY industry for many regions... I recently lived in one. Without it, the areas would likely not exist as places to live at all.
j2bax··on Apple Vision Nope: Why I returned mine
After testing one from my office out over the weekend, I think there are people with money to spare that will find this device worth owning for immersive content consumption alone. I found the couple of demo episodes Apple provided to be quite amazing/beautiful/immersive. If Apple is able to get exclusive access to various sports events to capture immersive video in addition to concerts and educational content, there are enough enthusiasts that would think it was worth paying the $3500 entry fee. Content is king! Guess we will see if Apple can make it happen.
j2bax··on Meta's big vision for face computers might be better than Apple's
Where in the world are you that people aren't glued to their phones like zombies?
j2bax··on Disney to take $1.5B stake in Epic Games
Definitely not the only, but certainly the one most capable of building a scalable virtual world.
j2bax··on Disney to take $1.5B stake in Epic Games
I wonder if Apple has any regrets about its battle with Epic... Seems like they could have been a great launch partner for the Vision Pro...
j2bax··on Email: InVision design collaboration services shutdown
That's a bummer. Now I need to find a new place to host my hundreds of project design decks! It was a great platform, I wonder what is going on behind the scenes.
j2bax··on Sam Altman, Greg Brockman and others to join Microsoft
That’s a nice thought but why would this technology be any different than any other? Perhaps OpenAI and Microsoft now compete with each other. Surely they won’t be the only players in the game… Apple, Google won’t just rest on their laurels. Perhaps they will make a better offer at some point to some great minds in AI.
j2bax··on OpenAI Boardroom Battle: Safety First
Let’s be honest… the cat is out of the bag and now it’s a race. If Openai tries to regulate itself too much they will eventually be eclipsed by another player that only worries about gov regulations and possibly just accepts the fines like many capitalists. I say buckle up and get ready for some massive disruption! Better for the US (at least for us citizens) to lead the way and maintain the power of AGI than many other alternatives… let’s start working on the post capitalist society!
j2bax··on Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean AI's not after you
>it is quite reasonable to 'cross that bridge when we reach it' (which may be never).

Unless you are a junior copy writer... Or a midlevel photographer... Or production artist... You better cross that bridge before your next rent check is due.

j2bax··on Do you make over 20k a month?
It’s in the Entrepreneur subreddit so I think the assumption is a lot of these people have employees. Not sure what’s magical about the number 20k though.
j2bax··on The elderly are becoming homeless at a rate not seen since the Great Depression
>are at the point where there is no middle ground between an apartment and a tent on the street.

Where's Adam Neumann when we need him!?
