iwasphone··on The Man Who Saves You from Yourself (2013)
All multi level marketing companies are cultish by nature. Realities such as market saturation simply don't exist, you're just not working hard enough / recruiting hard enough.

I spent a lot of time in south Florida, where it seems everyone in non-professional careers is hustling the newest MLM. The MLM recruiters are in turn driving their recruits into workshops like Landmark Forum, which is not a cult but is certainly cult-like. It promises the participant a "breakthough" in personal or professional life, but nearly everyone who participates in Landmark is there primarily to increase their MLM recruiting fu.

Except it's not one million USD. Also it's only open to citizens and residents of UAE.
iwasphone··on Automattic Raises $160 Million, Valued at $1.16 Billion
The reason is cultural: on HN you are expected to know products by the name of their corporate entity.
iwasphone··on No Exit
Investors arrive at an amount based on their estimate of the company's value and the share of equity they receive in return for their investment. If the founders then get commitments from additional investors, the company would have to attain a much larger value at exit time (i.e., IPO or purchase) for any of the investors to get a reasonable return. When done with consent it's called overcommitting. When done without consent, it's called fraud.

iwasphone··on Home Demo at Google VC's (Kevin Rose) House on Potrero Hill
Whoa:

"To this end, we now make our first clear demand of Google. We demand that Google give three billion dollars to an anarchist organization of our choosing. This money will then be used to create autonomous, anti-capitalist, and anti-racist communities throughout the Bay Area and Northern California. In these communities, whether in San Francisco or in the woods, no one will ever have to pay rent and housing will be free. With this three billion from Google, we will solve the housing crisis in the Bay Area and prove to the world that an anarchist world is not only possible but in fact irrepressible. If given the chance, most humans will pursue a course towards increased freedom and greater liberty. As it stands, only people like Kevin Rose are given the opportunity to reshape their world, and look at what they do with those opportunities.

We know that your security advisors are taking our analysis seriously..."

iwasphone··on Be with your thoughts more often
It's pleasing to me that writers like OP shed light on the folly of the personal productivity and efficiency arms race. Reminds me of the adage: "Don't just do something, sit there!"
iwasphone··on SharedHashFile
Ambitious undertaking, possibly transformational.
iwasphone··on Julie Ann Horvath Describes Sexism and Intimidation Behind Her GitHub Exit
It makes a lot of sense in such organizations, as it satisfies the employees' need for close human relationships without compromising the company's paranoid culture.

In this case--and likely in all for-profit companies--it only magnified the problem by adding another employee to the drama.

iwasphone··on Julie Ann Horvath Describes Sexism and Intimidation Behind Her GitHub Exit
HN really needs a reply bot that links to the appropriate wikipedia article on logical fallacies.
iwasphone··on Julie Ann Horvath Describes Sexism and Intimidation Behind Her GitHub Exit
> Horvath then told her partner, also a GitHub employee...

Protip: don't dip your pen in the company ink.

iwasphone··on Julie Ann Horvath Describes Sexism and Intimidation Behind Her GitHub Exit
Isn't it better to wait until all sides of the story have been told?
iwasphone··on Prominent GitHub Engineer Quits, Alleging Gender-Based Harassment
> The controversy calls to mind that of Adria Richards last year

False.

iwasphone··on Dear-sir-or-madam: a bookmarklet that transforms web pages into ransom notes
Perfect! I hope ransom notes come back in style.
iwasphone··on Restaurant fable explains everything wrong with San Francisco housing right now
I don't think the food metaphor makes any of the issues easier to understand.
iwasphone··on Why I Did Not Go To Jail
Motivational speaking.
iwasphone··on Show HN: What would I tweet? (Markov tweet generator)
Cool concept, but slightly confusing interface. When I type a different twitter handle it automatically updates below the generated tweet (rather then when I submit).
iwasphone··on ObamaCare's New Theory of Employment
Their conclusion, while ingenuine, is not surprising. Since the Bancroft family sold the publication, the Wall Street Journal editorial board has become a propaganda mouthpiece for Rupert Murdoch.

iwasphone··on Hacking Froyo
This frozen yogurt shop has a really simple and straightforward onboarding technique.
iwasphone··on Have I tattooed a syntax error on my arm?
There's no cultural significance, it's just (hetero) male bonding.

iwasphone··on Elixir and the Internet of Things – Handling a Stampede
Gripping article, but his incorrect use of apostrophes made me want to an hero.

iwasphone··on The growing irrelevance of Google Search
Exactly. He should have appended "...to me" to the end of his title.
iwasphone··on Play your own game
Beyond the sports metaphor, it seems you're really getting at the metaphor of an ecosystem. The ecosystem-like view really deserves to be more the status quo in this world than a refreshing aberration.
iwasphone··on Massive Dosing - the LSD Thumbprint
I'm glad to see so few commenters dismissing the subject because of their own lack of perspective, and so many commenters articulating their experiences so well.

The Internet--which incidentally owes its current incarnation to so many acid-dropping individuals--has provided many forums (fora?) for truthful discourse about these substances. Those who have had experience with LSD together have a voice that is going to drown out the insane, fearful rambling propaganda of the prohibitionists. It's safe to say we've reached a tipping point, and it's only a matter of time before we recover our freedom to explore our minds. Respect.

Yes, but how do you monetize it?
iwasphone··on Fuzzy Search: find what I meant, not what I said
This is a really cool development.

Depending on context, there may be cases where I want a strict search. Other times I may want Soundex-style (phonetic) matches, matches based on word form (different tense, number, gender, etc...), or matches based on common misspellings.

Having already built a couple of apps with IndexTank, I'm curious about controlling the degree of fuzziness in an API call. Can this be controlled through a parameter on a per-query basis?
