ivanche··on Don't Say Velcro (2017)
In Serbia we never say Velcro but thistle stripe (burdock stripe). Interestingly enough, we say gilette for razor and digitron for calculator.
ivanche··on Most homes for sale in 2023 were not affordable for a typical U.S. household
Isn't this just moving the goalposts? Yeah, you could buy even cheaper and bigger home if you'd move to rural Afghanistan, what a surprise. Ceteris paribus, bigger size == bigger (total) price, there's no way around it.
ivanche··on Most homes for sale in 2023 were not affordable for a typical U.S. household
Well this had to happen once. You can't increase home sizes indefinitely and expect them to stay affordable. I'm sure that a lot more families could afford 900 sqft homes/apartments.
ivanche··on Andre Braugher: Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Captain Raymond Holt Dies Aged 61
Goodbye Frank Pembleton, we'll always remember how you saluted Crosetti :(

ivanche··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2023 and recommend for 2024?
"A man for all markets" by Edward O. Thorp - a remarkable story of a brilliant mathematician from the Great Depression to beating Las Vegas casinos by card counting to practically becoming founding father of quants and beating Wall Street.

"The ultimate ETF guidebook" by David Stevenson & David Tuckwell - still reading but the book that goes deep into ETFs, way (and I mean way) above laconic "oh just invest in S&P500 and forget it" approach.

ivanche··on Shane MacGowan has died
"I'm going, I'm going where streams of whiskey are flowing" Hope you've found an eternal stream Shane :(
ivanche··on Shane MacGowan, Pogues songwriter and Irish music legend, dies aged 65
Some people thought of him as a rotten, old, toothless alcoholic. They weren't aware that he's actually a pure artist of a rare breed. We'll miss him dearly :(

ivanche··on Shane MacGowan, best known for Christmas hit Fairytale Of New York, dies at 65

ivanche··on Broadcom lays off many VMware employees after closing acquisition
If it's true that they'll lay off Oliver Drotbohm and Dan Vega then "seriously bad" could describe the impact.
ivanche··on Notepad++ v8.6: 20th-Year Anniversary
If by any chance Notepad++ author reads this: Thank you so much!
ivanche··on Things you're allowed to do (2020)
No sane person should take the counter side of such bets.

ivanche··on This is what the year actually looks like (2018)
In Germany it seems normal. In Serbia I don't remember anyone ever used it in my presence, emails etc.
ivanche··on This is what the year actually looks like (2018)
Line 7%. I assumed this would be in the 90+% territory. Either I am crazy or the world is.
ivanche··on Galaksija: The Soviet-Era, Z80-based microcomputer
Way more for sure, it was akin to a Cambrian explosion. One large downside was compatibility though - at best you could hope for two machines to be CP/M compatible, otherwise if you needed an app you could've written it yourself or hoped that someone else would do it.
ivanche··on Galaksija: The Soviet-Era, Z80-based microcomputer
You never had a chance to experience another Yugoslavian computer Pecom 32 then :)

ivanche··on Show HN: Generate JSON mock data for testing/initial app development
A friend and I had started a project similar to this some 6-7 years ago. We wanted to make all the generated data consistent so if, for example, you need data about German person it would return real city name, real (or at least plausible) street name, postal number, phone numbers both mobile and fixed with the proper country and operators code, email address using national domain, personal name was chosen out of plausible names for each country etc. etc. In the end it was so much work that we abandoned it :(
ivanche··on The German group buying ticket dodgers out of prison
Oh man, this impossibility to cancel SEPA-Lastschrift based subscription should be criminally charged.
ivanche··on Is Math Real?
OTOOH sometimes it's irrational and transcedental so there's that.
ivanche··on Is Math Real?
I don't know if it's real but it's definitely complex.
ivanche··on Fx – Terminal JSON Viewer
Would've been awesome if results are displayed under the commands. For example, command

  echo '{"name": "hello"}\n{"name": "world"}' | fx '.name'
would output what? My guess is hello world but it might be hello\nworld.
ivanche··on We built an AI-powered Magic the Gathering card generator
Next step is, of course, to build an AI-powered exchange for Magic the Gathering cards. They could name it "Magic the Gathering Online eXchange" or something like that.
ivanche··on Unchecked Java: Say goodbye to checked exceptions
A lot of people, probably. But definitely not the entire community [0].

ivanche··on Everything must be paid for twice (2022)
They mentioned engine and gearbox, so still you'd need at least gearbox oil change once in a while. Not to mention that they elegantly forgot clutch + flywheel which EVs don't have but are expensive as hell to change on ICEs (and you have to change them sooner or later).
ivanche··on Everything must be paid for twice (2022)
30 EUR per year? You can't even buy 2-3 liters of engine oil for that money, let alone brake oil, new tires (you change them every 50000km, right?), tire pressure sensors etc.
ivanche··on Set your pricing too low and you risk loosing customers
Yup, they even risk losing customers in the process.
ivanche··on Scaling up the Prime Video audio/video monitoring service and reducing costs
You mean 50% cheaper on-prem, right? 100% cheaper is 0.
ivanche··on On the unexpected joys of Denglisch, Berlinglish and global Englisch
Why would anyone use "downloaden" when there already is "herunterladen" is beyond me.
