ivanb··on With no fuel and no cash, Sri Lanka grinds to a halt
I tried to get a permission to work from Sri Lanka. I would have brought them taxes and currency. The officials could not understand what I was talking about. Some hanged up on me and some told that straight to my face.
ivanb··on Please, don't build another Large Hadron Collider
Yeah, no. Only LHC can generate particle events in a highly controllable environment with enough energy. In physics there are energy thresholds. Below a certain level of energy a certain event just never happens.

The low hanging fruit of discovering new physics looks like this. Build a bigger machine to collide particles with even more energy. Observe what comes out. It's a clear direction. Just throw money at the problem and get a result.

ivanb··on Fetch API has landed into Node.js
No, thanks. I'll stick with got.
ivanb··on Fetch API has landed into Node.js
Is there support for timeouts? It's the main reason I use https://github.com/sindresorhus/got
ivanb··on Myopia treatment 'smart glasses' from Japan to be sold in Asia
To people considering LASIK I want to say try ortho-k first. You'll get the sharpness, the halos and the whole experience but at least it will be reversible. I've been on ortho-k for around a decade.

ivanb··on Tools I use: PyCharm / Idea plugins
I'll add to this Stardock Groupy. Idea cannot open multiple projects in the same window but with Groupy you can simulate it. It will put your idea instances in tabs of a single window. I find it much easier this way to switch between multiple things I have to work on at the same time.
ivanb··on Differences with other Lisps
There are about two of them anyway.
ivanb··on Pollen – A library of CSS variables inspired by TailwindCSS
Somebody in this discussion pointed to nice library that might do what you want: https://propjockey.github.io/css-media-vars/
ivanb··on Pollen – A library of CSS variables inspired by TailwindCSS
Pollen is a library of CSS variables for rapid prototyping, consistent styling, and as a zero-runtime utility-first foundation for your own design systems. Heavily inspired by TailwindCSS.
ivanb··on Bring back hydrogen lifting gas
Hydrogen airships are terrible against any kind of attack. They are so slow and flammable that one can bring them down with just a flying toy. I'm not even talking about incendiary ammunition. You would not put people or expensive cargo on a low and slow flying bomb in 21 century.
ivanb··on The future of web software is HTML over WebSockets
> A couple of times a year, I'll re-read through the HTML LS and CSS specifications.

What is HTML LS?

ivanb··on Google admits Kubernetes container tech is too complex
Docker Swarm mode is alive and well and not going anywhere. It's right there, built into the regular Docker CLI.
ivanb··on Monolith First (2015)
Now that Fowler himself wrote about it I hope that the masses follow. Next I hope that the trend of going vertical-first comes back. Mr Fowler, could you please write an article on vertical-first scaling?
ivanb··on Monolith First (2015)
There is no replacement for discipline. If you cannot structure your modules well, what makes you think that your microservice spaghetti would look better?
ivanb··on Incomplete List of Mistakes in the Design of CSS
Top, Right, Bottom, Left is easy. Just remember this initialism: TRouBLe.
ivanb··on React created roadblocks in our enterprise app
Some of the performance problems on Windows are related to always-on antivirus. Exclude your project directories from antivirus scan and you'll see the difference. JetBrains IDEs now even have an auto-suggestion and an option to do it directly from the IDE.
ivanb··on Java on Truffle – Going Fully Metacircular
Java livecoding now doesn't look all that out of reach.
ivanb··on GUIDs Are Not the Only Answer
False.
ivanb··on GUIDs Are Not the Only Answer
If the main benefit of prefixed IDs is debugging then a dev tool can be created that would just look up the ID in all tables and report what object it corresponds to.
ivanb··on GUIDs Are Not the Only Answer
> Sometimes, we want a zero inconsistency approach to storing objects, so it might make sense to make the identifier (or part of it) the checksum of the content that is to be stored. This guarantees that the underlying content has not been modified.

No, it does not. I come across this false statement again and again. It seems that a lot of developers do not understand what checksums or hashes guarantee and what they absolutely do not guarantee.

Let's set this once and for all:

1. Differing checksums or hashes guarantee that the content is different. 2. Identical checksums or hashes do not guarantee anything. The content could be identical or not.

ivanb··on Video taken by pilots of what could be the elusive Los Angeles jet pack guy
There was a science fiction short story where a group of scientists was invited by military personnel to watch a short secret footage of someone flying a jetpack. The scientists were told that the inventor only had one prototype and he crashed it killing himself and destroying the unique device. Next several months the scientists spent brainstorming and trying to figure out how he did it.

Spoiler!

The footage turned out to be fabricated by military. The scientists still built a prototype of the jetpack. Not so fast, light and agile but they made something that was previously considered impossible.

ivanb··on Evidence of “modified gravity” in 150 galaxies bolsters dark matter alternative
To anyone who is interested in this field I suggest to look up MiHsC aka Quantized Inertia. The theory is based mostly on known physics. It is not too hard to understand. If proven true it may lead to us building new kinds of flying machines or energy sources. It also has a way of explaining gravity in terms of information theory.
ivanb··on Early humans may have survived the harsh winters by hibernating
There is no such word "lotska" in Russian. They could have meant "lyozhka", translating to something like "lie-down", an archaic word no one uses nowadays. Anyway, the story is unbelievable and has poor sources.

ivanb··on Ask HN: What evidence would convince you of intelligent extra-terrestrial life?
Proponents of anthropic principle would argue that there are too many coincidences that made existence of matter possible, existence of life possible and evolution fast enough to make intelligent life possible. Out of myriads of parallel universes it was our dirt ball that pulled all the lucky numbers and we are just suffering survivorship bias. There could be aliens, just not in our universe.

ivanb··on Compact nuclear fusion reactor is 'very likely to work,' studies suggest
Thanks for explaining. Good luck with removing all this gamma radiation from the system before it vaporizes the chamber but not fast enough as to cool the plasma and stop the reaction. I doubt that this sweet spot exists. Thermonuclear bombs exist only because plasma is surrounded by a thick layer of uranium which absorbs and re-emits gamma radiation thus not letting the plasma to cool. And this layer doesn't have to exist for too long. Less than a millisecond is fine to make a big enough bang.
