itsrajju··on AI Passport Photo
Here in India you don't carry your photo to the passport office. They click your picture onsite and that's what's printed on the passport.
itsrajju··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (June 2026)

Résumé/CV: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1gBSVV_pGn0PGF5pGMiMfQXLk...

Email: rajatarora.connect@gmail.com

I'm a hands-on Technical Architect / Principal Engineer working mostly in Fintech. I've built and scaled systems to handle 10M+ DAUs, recently delivered a custom Loan Management System for a client, expert at build-vs-buy analyses, monolith-to-microservice transitions (and the whys behind them), and communicating my ideas clearly.

I'm looking for a role where I can build large systems, solve hard problems, and have fun while doing it. If you're looking for someone similar, send me an email :)

Willing to relocate: No, but can travel occassionally

Technologies: Java, Spring Boot, AWS, JPA, Hibernate, MySQL, Elasticsearch, Redis, Docker, Kubernetes, Linux, Team Management, Stakeholder Management, Agile, Writing

Résumé/CV: https://rajat.co/rajatarora_resume_2.0.25.3.pdf

Email: r@rajat.co

I am a Software Engineer and an Engineering Manager with 12+ years of industry experience. My technical stack includes Java, Spring Boot, MySQL, Elasticsearch, AWS, Redis, and related technologies.

I pride myself on writing exceptionally clean code with strong emphasis on quality and maintainability. During my career, I've designed robust event-driven distributed systems capable of processing over 50 million messages daily, have broken monoliths into microservices, and have developed complex systems from scratch. My leadership experience includes managing development teams of up to 15 engineers, and I've recently co-authored a book on Low-Code Development with Appsmith.

Currently seeking full-time Software Engineering, or Engineering Management roles. I prefer remote opportunities, though I'm open to office-based positions within the Delhi/NCR region.

itsrajju··on JetBrains IDE new Terminal Interface
Seconded! And I also like how they treat their subscriptions. They reward long-term customers (by giving upto 40% discount on renewals), and even give a fallback license in case you want to stop paying them after a year. Kids do growth hacking, legends do customer retention!
itsrajju··on Figure out who's leaving the company: dump, diff, repeat
I am a part of one such group! It started as a WhatsApp group for all ex-employees, but has now morphed into a discord server. It's a great way to remain connected to friends you make at work, and recently, it has also become a way to share job openings to your network to help laid-off people.
itsrajju··on Anki – Powerful, intelligent flash cards
There's an Obsidian plugin for Anki -- https://github.com/reuseman/flashcards-obsidian

It connects with your Anki desktop app. You create notes in Obsidian in a specific format, and they get converted to Anki flashcards. This way your flashcard creation process becomes much easier if you already use Obsidian for note-taking.

itsrajju··on Anki – Powerful, intelligent flash cards
Yup -- https://apps.apple.com/in/app/ankimobile-flashcards/id373493...

It's expensive, but it's the only paid app by the creator of ankiweb (web, android, and desktop versions made by them are all free).

itsrajju··on Anki – Powerful, intelligent flash cards
Your boy is precious! He's on his way to becoming a highly intelligent adult.

I've seen a lot of people going like... why remember stuff when you can easily google it? But it doesn't work that way. The more facts reside in your brain, the more avenues it has to connect them together and generate insights (after all, that thing is the OG "neural network").

I highly admire your parenting in this aspect, and I hope to do the same when I have kids of my own.

Edit: I noticed after publishing my comment that you're Derek Sivers! I've been a long time reader of your blog :)

itsrajju··on The thrill of the bargain hunt at unclaimed baggage
Interesting! Why would the airline incur additional cost of shipping your ski equipment to your house, when putting it out to the baggage claim is... free?
itsrajju··on JMAP – a modern email open standard
Their message in/out limits are not strict. They send a warning if you go over, and allow for some tolerance upto 25% above the plan limit.

itsrajju··on In Lebanon, solar power is booming
Not the parent.

It's likely a safety issue in the case of grid-connected solar installations. These panels are designed to send excess electricity to the grid, and if the grid is down, the utility needs to make sure that busted cables are not carrying electricity... for the safety of the repairmen.

itsrajju··on TOTP for 2FA is incredibly easy to implement. So what's your excuse?
But what is stopping them from offering both? You can have the SMS 2FA as the default option, but also offer TOTP for the technically minded.
itsrajju··on Ask HN: What Books Do You Recommend Reading for 2022?
I'm currently going through a science fiction phase and recently completed reading the Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy [0] by Cixin Liu. It's a page-turning space opera thriller I can highly recommend.

If you are into fantasy crime fiction (think Godfather with some fantasy elements), do check out The Green Bone Saga [1] by Fonda Lee.

itsrajju··on Ask HN: Advice for applying to Junior Software Engineering roles?
Connecting to people already working in the company really helps. Pitch yourself to them and they might agree to provide you with an internal referral: it's an excellent way to jump the queue in the hiring pipeline.
itsrajju··on Ask HN: How do you handle spam reports against transactional email
One thing you could do is to provide an area in your SaaS where your customers' customers could view all emails sent to them. Add a small "unread" counter too in a place they can't miss. That way, even if they did unsubscribe from your emails, they could still get the messages.

And you could also add an option to resubscribe right there.

itsrajju··on Ask HN: What you up to? (Who doesn't want to be hired?)
Hey I like your writing style! I've signed up to your mailchimp. Congratulations on the new blog and keep going :)
itsrajju··on Show HN: I built a fake VS Code to browse live cricket score in office
In preparation of Ind vs Pak World Cup semi-final in 2011, about 125 people had applied for a leave (me included!) in a 150-person company I used to work in. The management eventually decided to stream the match in office.

All leave applications were cancelled :)

itsrajju··on I couldn't debug the code because of my name
As of 2 hours before me writing this comment, JetBrains claims to have fixed the underlying issue [0]. Maybe they saw this post? :D

itsrajju··on Show HN: Shiny Buildings – GitHub for Buildings
Thank you for making this, it is really useful! I'm currently saving for a house and I will keep an eye on this to use when I actually buy it.
itsrajju··on Electric aircraft set to take flight by 2026 under new agreements
I do have a Nebula subscription, and Wendover is part of it. I like the fact that Nebula is partly owned by the creators themselves, and a significant part of Nebula's revenue goes directly to them.
itsrajju··on Electric aircraft set to take flight by 2026 under new agreements
It was indeed in jest! Wendover's videos have been consistently increasing in quality over the years. The amount of research that goes into each one is phenomenal. So much so that lately if I ever come across any aviation topic on the internet, there's already a Wendover video about it. :)
itsrajju··on Electric aircraft set to take flight by 2026 under new agreements
Wendover Productions (who else?!) recently released a video[1] on the future of electric planes. Quite a lot of information in there!

itsrajju··on An impersonator issued a fake Reddit take down notice against SaveVideo
It did start with just youtube, yes. But in today's day and age it supports a large amount of sites. [1]

itsrajju··on Tiny Wins
Completely agree! Long ago I worked at a fintech startup that made a Master Data Management (MDM) solution for hedge funds. Usually people would log into the webapp, make changes to the data, and log out. Do it 10 times and it starts to get boring.

A couple of folks hacked together an Excel plugin that could make those data changes in bulk. Voila! Customers loved it!

The amount of happy customers we got for that weekend project was overwhelming.

itsrajju··on Subscription-based pricing is dead
For desktop software, I really like the Jetbrains model. They reward loyalty by giving you a discount for continued usage. ($149 for first year, $119 for second, and $89 from third year onwards)[1]

And if you have paid for one year and then decide to stop paying, you can download a perpetual license for the version you were currently using.[2]

itsrajju··on Google outage – resolved
Even software engineers who are in a state of flow keep working :)
itsrajju··on Google Photos hooked users with free unlimited storage. Now that's changing
Theoretically you can. You just need 6 different email addresses and add them to your onedrive account. You won't be able to use it as a single 6TB volume though.
itsrajju··on HP Instant Ink is “ink as a service”
The "sponge" is called a waste ink pad. You can buy them off amazon and replace them yourself [0].

itsrajju··on Ask HN: How Do You Learn?
If you're interested in how our brains work during learning, check out "A Mind for Numbers" by Dr. Barbara Oakley [0]. It may be geared towards STEM college students, but I found it a great resource for fine tuning my own process.

And if you prefer a visual medium, please check out the Coursera course "Learning how to learn" [1] by the same person.

itsrajju··on Ask HN: What are good resources to learn system design?
Please check out Azure Cloud Design Patterns [0]. It lists a large number of common patterns applied in the field of distributed application design.
