isitmadeofglass··on The Origins of Python
> It is not possible for a from zero beginner to read ordinary Python code with decorators, generators or what not and understand it.

Having taught beginners both python and other languages, I’d say it’s significantly easier to teach decorators than it is to teach higher order functions normally. Because in python the students have already seen, used and understood what the cache decorator does before we even touch the concept of a function returning another function, which they always need some time to grok, both in python and other languages.

As for generators I’ve never seen anyone struggle with them. What do you find difficult to understand about generators?

isitmadeofglass··on Forgejo – Launching a Fork of Gitea
Things being what they are, gitea is essentially the form, and this is the continuation of the existing open source model. Gitea(Tm) is trying to fragment the community by creating a company, but this fork is just about building a great open source product.

If anyone at Gitea(Tm) is seriously afraid of fragmenting the community they are free to contribute to the open source product just like everyone else, but the open source community is naturally not free to engage in anything on behalf of the company.

isitmadeofglass··on Amazon’s already greenlit an FTX miniseries
Can’t wait for the final episode in the FTX serious where out of nowhere SBF suddenly stabs Carolina Ellison and her pet iguana decides to take out its rage by destroying her office chair.
isitmadeofglass··on Amazon’s already greenlit an FTX miniseries
> there is a paranoid subculture that assumes every donation brings legislative power

And there is a certain class of people so naive that they think any individual would give hundreds of millions to a politician with nothing but just good intentions, and that any politician would warrant such a donation purely through being outstanding and Jo able politicians.

isitmadeofglass··on Amazon’s already greenlit an FTX miniseries
Are you seriously suggesting that it’s a coincedence and not deliberate action on the side of Lewis? It’s not like there has been a shortage of people being perplexed by FTX/Alameda’s ability to seemingly print money, and it’s not like he wouldn’t be able to smell a potentially great story ahead of time.
isitmadeofglass··on Amazon’s already greenlit an FTX miniseries
I hope they ditch any attempt at making it serious or realistic. Just have it Silicon Valley style and every episode starts with some wacky attempt at making a big scoring trade which ultimately fails and the episode ends with someone going. Don’t worry, we only lost 200mil, but we’ve gotten 400mil user deposits in the same time, all we need is one great trade and we can cover the whole!

Repeat and rinse for every new episode, until people get tired of the series and they cancel it, which then leads to the final episode where it all blows up, SBF sits down looking defeated, says sorry and then some financier goes, that’s alright, honest mistake, here’s 300mil let’s start up FTX2 fade to black.

isitmadeofglass··on Why Isn’t the Whole World Rich?
> What would happen?

You are completely out of touch with the reality that the majority of the human population still faces. What would realistically happen was that people would buy washing machines and have more time to read books with their children.

isitmadeofglass··on How not to think about cells
> It really depends on how you define a machine.

Sure, and depending on how you define a computer program hamlet is a computer program, and depending on your definition of Christmas movie, Planet of the Apes is Christmas movie.

The point is that for typical and sane definitions cells aren’t machines, hamlet isn’t a program and planet of the apes isn’t a Christmas movie (But Die Hard is).

isitmadeofglass··on Letter SBF sent today to FTX employees
That’s bullshit. Working for Google is a plus in job seeking but not because other companies believe you personally made Google great. Same with people coming out of FTX, others aren’t going to assume you where in on the CEO syphoning funds just because you where employed building their web front end.
isitmadeofglass··on Pfizer CEO claims 400% price hike on Covid vaccines will be “free”
Actually no. If you are uninsured there are programs to provide it to you free or discounted.
isitmadeofglass··on While crypto bro scammed clients, reporters scammed readers
> You are going to have people with different opinions saying different things, and sooner of later some of them will be wrong

That’s a rather dismissive attitude towards the craft of journalism. Imagine the same applies to medicine. Someone pays a doctor to let your mother die and you’d be saying “well sometimes patients die, we can’t go cherry-picking those cases and pretend it matters” The major problem around crypto reporting wasn’t that some reporters got it wrong. It’s that some reporters got major funding from crypto bros and then happened to write extremely naive and flattering articles about crypto bringing in gullible masses who now lost their money when the FTX Ponzi went bust.

It’s not an attack on the free press to point out that writing sugarcoated lies about financial investments because you stand to earn is a scam.

isitmadeofglass··on ‘Why am I talking to 10 guys?’ The rise and fall of dating apps
> This is so true! You have to be 110% sure the other person is actually attracted to you.

Or just be a woman. Causal sexual harassment and even sexual assault in the workplace is almost always just ignored or glossed over if it’s perpetrated by a woman. If a man reports to HR that his female boss grabbed his ass they’ll look at him like he’s mentally ill, or ask him if he’s bothered by it because he’s homosexual.

isitmadeofglass··on ‘Why am I talking to 10 guys?’ The rise and fall of dating apps
These types of articles are always biased due to being written by people who are generally not seen as relationship material by the other gender. That’s why they are still on apps and why everyone eventually ghosts them. It’s not because of Tinder or other apps. The woman who go in tinder, go on 20-30 dates and end up in a relationship you never hear from because they are done with it and on with their lives.
isitmadeofglass··on FTX’s Sam Bankman-Fried cashed out $300M during funding spree
Nha, he spent a good couple of billions on buying favor of politicians. He’ll end up with a slap on the wrist and a “boys will be boys” sentence compared to Holmes.
isitmadeofglass··on FTX’s Sam Bankman-Fried cashed out $300M during funding spree
> That shows poor judgement

How so? The fact that people make decisions based on only what they actually know is in no way a lapse of judgement. I mean what else are they supposed to do?

isitmadeofglass··on Eli Lilly CEO says insulin tweet flap “probably” signals need to bring down cost
The patent has expired anyone can make insulin cheaper if they want to. The new drugs on patent (many set to expire in the short term future) are all improvements that greatly improve quality of life for patients which is why they are preferred to just using human insulin.
isitmadeofglass··on Legoland bond crisis threatens South Korea's economy
Are you suggesting that experts advices that they should default on A1 bonds even though they could clearly manage to extend and pay them? That seems highly unlikely. I don’t think any expert in the field would have such disregard for the importance of trust in the system.
isitmadeofglass··on Bethesda issues statement to Mick Gordon
Yes, and in contrast to Mick, you know that they can’t be lying because while he presented the evidence he had, (which is a very one-sided thing to do), they are doing the very balanced thing of saying “we have the evidence and we are willing to disclose it in an appropriate venue” /s

isitmadeofglass··on Eli Lilly pulls millions in Twitter advertising after fake account debacle
So I guess Elon ends up winning by instantly showing how much damage he can wreck against big organizations if they don’t pay him huge sums to “advertise” essentially internet anarchy protection money. And I’m sure how bigger companies are paying up they’ll do actual verification before anyone else gets to go out with a blue checkmark claiming to be Eli Lilly…
isitmadeofglass··on FTX’s balance sheet was bad
> to have generously funded a lot of effective altruism charities

That should have read “dubiously funneled money to his mates fake charity”

For all of this the fact that he was, even back when he wasn’t “the next big tech wizard” was funneling 50% of his salary, tax deductible, to his friends charity fund should have raised flags that this “charity” is actually that, and it should be put under scrutiny now, because it’s obviously these guys slush fund.

isitmadeofglass··on Zeal OS is a modernized fork of the Temple Operating System
What do you mean? He was always treated with respect and admiration on HN, with an understanding of his personal difficulties.

I think your conflating the treatment he received here with how he was treated on Reddit.

isitmadeofglass··on Taler Systems SA is looking for investors for development of GNU Taler
There’s little chance that any form of digital currency that does not allow for tax evasion at then same level we currently have will ever take off. The people doing the tax evasion are the ones running the world.
isitmadeofglass··on Twitter “blue check” scams: an incomplete dump of the first 48h
When the news of an 8$/month verified account came out, I naively thought that meant verified would still mean that they verified the identity of the user. The badge should be swapped out for a green dollar sign and called “Paid” instead. There is obviously no verification involved now.
isitmadeofglass··on We should have Markdown-rendered websites
> HTML is a subset of Markdown.

Yes, so all websites are already written in markdown. Its just tjat No browsers support the typical header/list shorthands, but that doesn’t matter because even if they did you’d still need more tages to get interactivity and styling working.

People aren’t imagining a world where markdown makes anything simpler they are imagino by that a format change would make people build less complex websites. But why would they? It’s not HTML that makes the Twitter front end or Facebook complicated, it’s the desisted functionality, which wouldn’t change even if the spice code looked more like markdown and less like html.

isitmadeofglass··on Study confirms that processed foods key to rising obesity
It sounds like this hypothesis would predict a much larger population of obese vegetarians and vegans than what is actually observed.
isitmadeofglass··on Git as a janky Twitter replacement
Data sharing has close to a quarter of a million forks. This project would have to become an extremely popular experiment before it starts pushing that limit.

That said, I hope it does; this is a great and fun project.

isitmadeofglass··on Tesla devs at Twitter misunderstand Slack privacy; leak fire lists based on LOC
Just because you take something into consideration does not mean it becomes a criteria. But I think we can all agree that it would be a mistake in a mass layoff to accidentally fire the top 10 contributors to a given project if the 11th contributor only ever made 3 contributions all just updating comments right?

Well that sort of logic requires you review the logs. It doesn’t have to mean you set up some arbitrary “anyone under ckloc per week is fired”

isitmadeofglass··on Mathics: A free, open-source alternative to Mathematica
Nesting is the concept of having a thing under another thing. 1+2 will be referred to as a mathematical equation and 1+((((a-b)/3+2/87)-6)23) will be referred to as a nested equation. Of cause this is rather lose semantics since both are expressions or statements and not equations, but that’s how the language is typically used.

This is what that looks like in wolfram alpha: https://www.wolframalpha.com/input?i=1%2B%28%28%28%28a-b%29%... It looks the same in Mathematica while your typing it in, which makes I extremely easy to work with, because even very complex equations look exactly like usual in Mathematica instead of ending up looking like lisp implementation of the Fibonacci sequence.

isitmadeofglass··on Mathics: A free, open-source alternative to Mathematica
> I'm not sure you'd want to write maths that way. Every WYSIWYG equation editor I've used are very annoying to work with.

Try Marhematica and you’d change your mind. Yes every other tool does it poorly, but Mathematica does it right. It’s fantastic and you miss it everywhere else when you have to leave the Mathematica eco system.
