intoverflow2··on YouTube-mp3 agrees to shut down
Only enthusiasts can truly be trusted with archiving culture.

Compare what.cd to iTunes. Compare Karagarga to Netflix, people actually go out of their way to create the best version of a movie, maybe the western release has incorrect hardcoded subs and awful picture quality. Someone goes out of their way to find the best version of it which may be something obscure like a Japanese laserdisc, rip it, fix subtitles and audio etc and release it for no monetary gain just the pure love of the media.

People actually being paid to release this stuff care far less about it than enthusiasts.

So glad I exist in a timeline where youtube-dl exists.

Having culture locked up in these corporate sites that can wipe it out or remove it in less than a second makes me so anxious.

intoverflow2··on Flat UI Elements Attract Less Attention and Cause Uncertainty
> Steve Jobs and Scott Forstall had a huge advantage, they only had to care about a 320x240

Honestly this isn't a big deal it's massively overstated. OS X managed to pull of Aqua and MS managed to pull off Aero both with arbitrary UI sizing.

I feel this point is only stated by people who came to UI when they only had to worry about 1 size and then were shocked at the idea of treating the UI as anything other than a Photoshop flat.

intoverflow2··on Flat UI Elements Attract Less Attention and Cause Uncertainty
Definitely believe Apple had been exploring sensor driven UI effects if you follow the signs like this patent [0]. Wouldn't have been shocked if they'd had a prototype with the whole UI doing it around iOS 4/5. But only the Music.app volume knob part shipped (iOS 4 IIRC the brushed metal on the knob had a tilt based lighting effect).

Think if you're dealing with the sort of types who work in ICOs you need to be beyond business savvy and more expect to be screwed at every turn.
intoverflow2··on How YouTube perfected the feed
> I probably do spend more time on the site because of this shitty design

Same can be said about the insufferable video suggestions that now cover half the embedded player right where you have got used to click to pause/unpause it over the years.

YouTube UX designers implement this dark pattern, then look cheerfully at their metrics as if people are really into it because they use it so much. When I know for a fact I've mis-clicked it almost every time it's popped up.

Drowning design decisions in metrics needs to die, it's just a breeding ground for dark patterns.

intoverflow2··on How YouTube perfected the feed
Watch one video about graphics cards and then have YouTube recommend you Linus Tech Tips every day, till the end of time completely ignoring how many times you click "Not Interested" completely ignoring you have blocked his account.

Noticed several other scenarios like this where you watch a part of one video on a topic and YT's algorithm will try and force a certain YouTuber on you for the rest of the time you use that account.

This isn't perfecting this is force feeding. Respect my blocks.

intoverflow2··on iOS 11 Dock and Gesture Controls to Replace 'iPhone 8' Home Button Entirely
I'm sure they can be replaced with "Gesture and Swipe Soup"

Hey at least we'll have a (mostly) bezel-less display which is a win to someone at Apple for some reason.

intoverflow2··on iOS 11 Dock and Gesture Controls to Replace 'iPhone 8' Home Button Entirely
Worried they're too busy chasing the industrial design dream of an entire screen surface that usability and sensibility is being thrown out of the window.

Normally I'd have faith but honestly things are getting weird over there.

Think you may be looking at this only through a developer lens. Bet if you showed anyone under 15 an internet without pictures and video they'd consider it broken.

I don't know how anyone can say that with a straight face. Imagine for a second if Nintendo or Sony had released a peripheral like that and had released nothing but a demo disk in over a year. There is no way people would be speaking about it as fondly as you are.

I feel Valve gets way too much credit just because they run a digital Walmart with cheap games.

intoverflow2··on Apple Scales Back Its Ambitions for a Self-Driving Car
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but it was my understanding Apple specifically stopped having teams "looking into weird slightly bullshit things" when Jobs returned.

The Apple Knowledge Navigator video comes to mind, it feels very similar to video-vaporware like Microsoft Origami and Microsoft Courier

Instead of calling a number and listening to messages one by one you have an inbox and can play/delete them using a UI.

When your customers have this sort of attitude it's no wonder Apple managed to convince themselves this was worthwhile.

intoverflow2··on Workplace flexibility is the way to win the war for talent
I get what you're saying (and agree) but you're using my metaphor on how to extract a better work life in a team environment to make a completely different different point on a completely different topic.
intoverflow2··on Workplace flexibility is the way to win the war for talent
> Clear goals are for junior "code monkeys" who just do what they are told without any concern for if they are going the right thing.

Agree 100%, the less you act like a cog in a machine the less people will treat you like one. Lots of developers seem to want to log in to a system every day and just have a list of tasks they have to complete without any real collaboration or divergent thought and have their salary calculated by % of task completion.

In my experience the people who collaborate in the office and try to push things further are the ones easily granted autonomy and no longer have to answer to micromanagement. Managers can see the difference between a box ticker and the breakouts that are actually making a difference at the company, once you achieve that then you'll notice people stop questioning what time you turn up to the office if at all.

> and a very poor representation of what Reddit is

I'd disagree, the fatpeoplehate subreddit is basically the same thing as /r/trashy /r/cringeanarchy and other other popular subreddits that are regular fixtures on the popular page.

It's a thoroughly unpleasant website.

intoverflow2··on 64-bit Firefox is the new default on 64-bit Windows
The venn diagram of Firefox users and people who believe Windows 7 32bit is still the best version of Windows and refuse to upgrade probably has a decent amount of overlap.

These are the realities of shipping for the minority not the majority. Users who are a blip for some companies end up being huge to others.

intoverflow2··on Microsoft Announces Windows 10 Pro for Workstations
It is by default I'm actually sitting on a fresh install as of a week ago on my work machine.

It probably retains a legacy setting if you updated but this is straight from Apple. I never even knew that preference box existed.

intoverflow2··on Microsoft Announces Windows 10 Pro for Workstations
Get this is OS X too these days during the early hours. Computer wont even be idle I'll literally be typing and suddenly my apps will start closing left and right as OS X has decided its time to update/reboot.

Classic example of Metrics Driven Design, if you start scoring a team's performance on how many people update to the latest version then the methods of forcing an update become more and more intrusive. No wonder Apple always boasts such great update percentages for iOS, the thing practically bullies you into updating, I had a 4S for a long time and had to dismiss multiple nags a day to update and threats to delete apps to make space for the precious update.

intoverflow2··on Apple staffers reportedly rebelling against open office plan
It's not really goofing off, I absolutely work in several focused spurts during the day. Which is also why I'm never that fussed about turning up on time because I never do any real work in the morning anyway.

Can't dig it out now but John Cleese did a good talk on creativity explaining why this works and how brains solve problems in the background which is why inspiration hits in the shower and on the train. By alternating between focusing then procrastinating and ignoring work you can force a decent cadence of creativity into your work.

intoverflow2··on Apple staffers reportedly rebelling against open office plan
Environmental arguments are silly when living near the office will likely use public transport and remote workers are usually out in the countryside so will likely use 2 cars extensively compared to a city worker using public transport 100% of the time.
intoverflow2··on Apple staffers reportedly rebelling against open office plan
Speaking as a designer who works close with devs. I think a lot of people championing remote work who are remote workers themselves don't seem to realise how frustrating it is working with them.

Fumbling around getting them on call every meeting, having to have them ramble on about something wasting peoples time if they misunderstand something because they're not in the room and we're all too polite to just tell them to shut up and move on, having to take special time out of my work to go on a 10 minute call that could be sorted in 20 seconds standing behind sometimes desks.

It's a very engineer-centric idea that they can just solve everything remote but if you're building a product that relies on design and more human focused work it can be an absolute nightmare having to work with a remote engineer.

intoverflow2··on Unreal Engine 4.17 Released
Biggest telltale sign of an unreal game for me is when it streams in new objects/effects a frame too late. If you turn too fast you often see the end a corridor drawn in a frame late and see the skybox in some worst cases. You can even see it in this video [0] which looks gorgeous in stills but as soon as the camera changes there is a single frame where the reflections are not drawn in yet.

Still amazing tech, just something I've noticed.

intoverflow2··on Hacker News News Feed for the Mac Touch Bar
According the ATP.fm the only safe way to clean the dust out of it is to take it to an Apple store. You can easily destroy the mechanism if you manage to pry the keys off.

I imagine this will be fixed in the next iteration though.

intoverflow2··on Hacker News News Feed for the Mac Touch Bar
Do the sliders actually work better than the keys?

Currently I can adjust my volume with my eyes closed in bed at night when listening to a podcast because it's the second key from the top right of the keyboard.
