interstice··on EA CEO: "Real hunger" among developers to use AI to speed up development
I think this is missing the creative aspect of taking an idea and turning it into reality. Developers spend all day finding the middle ground between an idea that won’t work and a simple realistic solution that will
interstice··on Increased productivity with a self hosted CRM
Just a heads up the login page for the demo doesnt give the login details
interstice··on Leaving Rust gamedev after 3 years
Reading the part about global state reminds me of some of my thoughts building backend web apps. Not having global namespace pollution is fine, but not having any global registry of some sort can make things far harder for the size that most things are going to be.
interstice··on Cost of developing new drugs may be lower than industry claims: trial
That rules out just about any non regulated altruism. Eg open source
interstice··on Modern EV Batteries Rarely Fail: Study
There are quite a few unattended stations in NZ
interstice··on The man who killed Google Search?
I’ve been toggling between Kagi and Perplexity, can honestly say I don’t miss google search (still use maps though)
interstice··on I made an open source Windows app to rewind and search everything on screen
I spent ages looking for something like this for Mac before giving up and writing a script that takes screenshots every 10 seconds and another script to compile that up into video using ffmpeg!

I'd love to contribute but I know nothing about Swift, mine was all in bash scripts with launchd to run them.

interstice··on Ask HN: One-person companies—how do you manage it all and stay sane?
I have heard of but not read, this is just a collection of hard won coping strategies!

I will say it has some downsides, though - I feel pretty fragmented outside of work.

interstice··on Ask HN: One-person companies—how do you manage it all and stay sane?
Unsure if this is healthy - but after 12 years it’s by almost completely compartmentalising my mind, and focusing on one thing at a time. Started that habit as a freelancer and it’s probably saved me from burnout multiple times.

These days I feel like my attention is like a lighthouse, I’ll do a half day of finances here - clear my inbox there, a full week on some deadline, etc. its kind of finding a flow. needless to say this works better when your calendar isn’t flooded already

Also I put everything and I mean everything in lists or notion, I’ll put every email to reply to, every feature I need to build every decision I need to remember. The less I’m holding on to the more I can focus without feeling like I’m forgetting something.

interstice··on Only <SPAN>s
Interesting idea, and I’d think mostly only limited by cost/speed per token currently
interstice··on Cycloidal marine propellers: Efficient thrust in any direction
Yes, but a traditional prop doesnt extend down like that.

Come to that, shallow water would be fun.

interstice··on Cycloidal marine propellers: Efficient thrust in any direction
As if I wasn’t already reasonably scared of swimming near boats
interstice··on Pikatea – Long Boi – Extra Long Keyboard Kit
I want a circular one of these on a lazy Susan so I can use macros like some kind of extreme sport
interstice··on Tool Use (function calling)
I literally just wrote some typescript functionality for the xml beta function calling stuff like 2 days ago. The problem with the bleeding edge is occasionally cutting yourself I guess.
interstice··on Could the cosmos, in fact, be conscious?
If by assumed you mean hotly debated, yes
interstice··on Mazda’s rotary engine in the age of the electric car
Since the achilles heal of the rotary is wearing seals has anyone seriously invested in testing coating/material tech for this? It may not make sense for mass production but spending ~10k to make a bulletproof rx7 would be an incredibly good investment.
interstice··on 'Super memory': Why Emily Nash is sharing her brain with science
I associate strongly with this, my memory is almost entirely compartmentalised. Even to the point of what happened earlier today being a fog unless I can find a leap off point.

The answer is start a business, it’s a strength to be able to deep dive into all areas and leap between them at will, I’ve found.

interstice··on About tweaking the fundamental settings of your brain
At a guess author uses one of those nested list note taking apps
interstice··on 3D printed titanium structure shows supernatural strength
Recently saw an interesting infill/layer pattern that offset the layers and spaced them (think hexagonal pattern when viewed from the side) - might help with the single plane delaminating issue. Combined with this style of infill pattern we could be getting somewhere.

Makes me wish I had time to mess around with GCODE

interstice··on What it's like to staff the home of a billionaire
Buying property is a pretty bad way to put money into the economy, though partly dependent on your locations approach to capital gains (where I am it’s untaxed).
interstice··on A mechanical keyboard with programmable knobs and full color screen panel
Nuphy has one!
interstice··on Big Post About Big Context
Isn’t it quite likely it already had the whole text from its training data? Which might make it a bit of a different case.
interstice··on A mechanical keyboard with programmable knobs and full color screen panel
I like that one but I'm holding on for this one https://worklouder.cc/nomad-e/

I also love my Nuphy 96, but it's knobless

interstice··on Netlify just sent me a $104k bill for a simple static site
Oh wow sorry didn't mean to be personally flippant to the VP! Hacker news is wild.

I just had a look at the billing screen and I can see notifications but not budgeting options (on the Pro plan). Ideally I'd like to monitor/configure spend per deployment as some of our sites have big sales which can = big fees. Is this possible?

interstice··on Google's Gemini Headaches Spur $90B Selloff
There is a website dedicated to listing how many times Google has done this. It’s a long list.

The biggest insult really is these Google products often do have a reasonably large and dedicated following, it just doesn’t seem to be enough to move the needle compared to a monster ad business.

interstice··on Netlify just sent me a $104k bill for a simple static site
Vercel will happily tell you how much you are spending in pretty much realtime as it sails past your budget
interstice··on Show HN: Darwin – Automate Your GitHub Project with AI
Rincewind?
interstice··on Polymaths Are Late Bloomers
To some degree, however there is a difference between specialising in weird stuff and being generally curious about all stuff.

The part about connections resonates, increasingly it feels like everything is facets of a whole rather than completely disparate subjects. I feel there is something to be gained from being able to view things in that way.

interstice··on Utility classes aren't the same as inline styles (2021)
> Inline styles only apply to the elements they’re declared on

This is a feature. Utility classes that do more than 1-2 things are hellish to reason about at scale, especially when they start interacting with each other

interstice··on Show HN: htmz – a low power tool for HTML
Also NZ, haven’t tested but 200-400ms is standard here and west coast US is fine. East coast or Europe is noticeably bad
