You highlighted the correlation. I bet GoPro users have the highest fatality rate of all camera brands.

I was at a fungus event yesterday (really) and they spoke a bit about patterns in nature and how they are similar to Turing Patterns.

> lacked a rotating plate which is a pretty essential feature.

They are not essential. You can buy new and professional microwave ovens without them. There can be other ways to help distribute heat.

I hope we get a return to basic tactile switched devices. A friend has a basic coffee maker with one giant switch. My microwave has two knobs.

There's a secret slideshow folder(demo mode?) where you can put in your own images that will display when it sleeps. It was kind of fun to use it as an eink display. I never figured out how to remote in/ssh to remotely swap the images though.

I never understood why this was always seen as such a constraint. It’s three (or four) pins! It doesn’t even have to have the “hole” form factor. You could have them all in a straight line and then place a headphone jack AGAINST them. I always thought a magnetic TRRS set of pins along the side of a phone could work. Add a sleeve to the connector’s side too. Heck you could standardize a flattened TRRS or whatever that would still slip readily into a typical jack.

interestica··on Being Green: A new book marvels at the strangeness of plants
A friend recently discovered a very strange plant growing in their garden. It seemed utterly alien. They used an online visual tool to identify it. It turns out it's something called "horsetail" and it's considered a "living fossil". (In its later stages of life it does look much more plant-like).

Via wiki:

> Equisetum is the only living genus in Equisetaceae, a family of vascular plants that reproduce by spores rather than seeds.

> Equisetum is a "living fossil", the only living genus of the entire subclass Equisetidae, which for over 100 million years was much more diverse and dominated the understorey of late Paleozoic forests. Some equisetids were large trees reaching to 30 m (98 ft) tall.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equisetum

The plants that we see right now are just a snapshot of what's currently successful. If we eventually find alien life somewhere, the strangeness might look a lot like the earth-bound "aliens" of our own past.

interestica··on Ask HN: What rabbit hole(s) did you dive into recently?
update: The quote discrepancy has been mostly corrected today. We'll see if there are any other ramifications considering the slight-misquote did lead to other criticisms.

It's a dangerous game when news articles are rewriting content pulled from news wires (eg, Canadian Press in this case) and it's not always clear which sections are pulled from where. There's an argument for legitimate AI-rewriting that can at least leave in direct sources for the content that it pulls in/summarizes (a task that ends up being a hindrance for deadline-facing humans).
