Based on the way consumers have behaved over my 30-odd years of life, I seriously doubt they will care enough about the fates of voice actors, developers or any other folks who are mistreated or discarded in the project of creating yet another Call of Duty iteration. We're an atomized society thats being trained all day every day to just purchase things, consequences be damned. I want to believe you are right but I suspect you are not. I suspect you are coping and to be honest, I want to do that too.
Its always amazing to me how, even on a site inhabited almost exclusively by people that make a living writing software, people get so offended by the idea of paying for software. As long as software does not have lock-in and is offered for a reasonable price, I'm very happy to pay someone for their time and ingenuity.
In my experience Mautrix has been very easy to run and can bridge new channels automatically as they're created. I use Matrix exclusively to chat with my friends on Discord.
> I don’t draw a salary, so the total amount I earned from TinyPilot in 2023 was $236k. People often wonder how I survived on the meager earnings of my first five bootstrapper years.
TIL a $230k income is meager. Jokes aside, what am I misunderstanding here?
Are you arguing that this kind of advertising is a good or neutral thingm. Or that life just kind of sucks and we need to get used to it? I'd rather push for better software and advertising practices, personally...
I use ORMs all day every day on very large projects. Its painful sometimes and some are less painful than others. When I've tried for using raw SQL even for personal projects, it was much more painful. Right tool for the job etc.
I ended up purchasing a Bangle.js 2. Its definitely not in the same class as any of the premium watches but its very inexpensive, open - source and hackable.
To be fair, my list of necessary features was very short:
- display the time
- display mobile notifications
- display weather
Concerns about company bankruptcy aside my thing is this: I don't want to have an ongoing relationship with a company. My entire adult life I've watched company after company succumb to enshittification. I have no choice but to assume that the company I buy from today will soon become a company I no longer want to do business with. And yes, of course I always can technically decide to cancel a subscription but then I no longer have the thing I paid for. I'm old enough to remember when I didnt have to worry about this and I definitely prefer owning my stuff.
My guess is that they'll introduce tiers where your current price gets much less access. Presumably this will be done when customers have no where else to go for the titles that they want. Customers will get angry, many tweets will be sent, many articles will be written, maybe MSFT will even issue a statement saying they will pause the plan until they can "better communicate the value to our customers". Then, they will jam the plan thru anyways and their customers will deal with it. This movie is a remake.
Why would a profit seeking engine not automate this? When was the last time any company at thr FAANG level did something "nice" just to be nice? There's always a hockey stick graph somewhere.
This is a totally aside but as someone attempting to learn Spanish as an adult I was curious about the translation from "castellano" to "spanish" (rather than using "espanol"). I had assumed that it referred to the Catalan language but based on some searches it sounds like maybe it _can_ refer to a particular dialect of Spanish but can also just refer to the Spanish language in general. Do i have that right? Language is fascinating!
This looks exactly what I started building awhile ago (and then bailed when I discovered Foundry). Do you think you'll ever release the code so it can be self-hosted?
As much as I love the fact that I have my choice of server and client I have to say that it does make me wonder if it affects adoption. When the Mastodon growth spikes happened the complaint that I heard most often was from people that couldn't figure out which client to use or which instance to use. Too much choice tends to paralyze people and they default to proprietary services because they don't know what choices to make.
Do you have a source for the claim of the average software engineer becomes a millionaire? As a software engineer I would really like for you to be correct.
Big fan of Steam here but I wouldn't say it was _always_ amazing. In the beginning, it was a friends network that was almost always down and a launcher for games I already owned and played without a launcher for years. I hated it for a long time but it is a great platform right now.
Not sure why you're going so hard at OP. Just don't use the tool and move on, man :) Its totally OK if you like different tools. The acerbic response is totally unnecessary.
Really surprised by all of the support for Synology Photos. I love it for a lot of things but this was totally unreliable for me. Must be some sort of config issue on my end.
