inductive_magic··on Most Americans just don't matter to the economy like they once did
Yeah, but the US has >25% of the global GDP.

Go to India or China and look at the average persons buying power, then go to Texas or California. Singapore and Switzerland are in a comparable income bracket, but have a combined population of <15M.

inductive_magic··on Rules to improve air quality are under attack
Murc's law
inductive_magic··on Buy European Made. Support European Values
How are you not aware that the US painted "we are no longer a reliable partner" all above the sky?
inductive_magic··on Buy European Made. Support European Values
Startup CEO from Europe here. How am I supposed to turn a blind eye to the risk that the dependency from the US has become lately?
inductive_magic··on Accelerating scientific breakthroughs with an AI co-scientist
> I don't think generating hypotheses is where AI is useful,

> Generating hypotheses is the fun, exciting part that I doubt scientists want to outsource to AI

The latter doesn’t imply the former

inductive_magic··on How Apple Watch estimates VO2Max within 1.2 ml/kg/min without a treadmill test
Care to elaborate why you think this reading is so wrong? Vo2max has a significant genetic component, and it doesn't improve unless you actually push your anaerobic threshold, i.e. interval training and long distance running. It doesn't improve by "going on a 5 mile walk or whatever".
inductive_magic··on How Apple Watch estimates VO2Max within 1.2 ml/kg/min without a treadmill test
Wouldn't simply starting a HIIT-workout on the watch solve this?
inductive_magic··on I picked up a shitty NUC from ewaste and it had a label on it for an AI company
Very cool, ty.

inductive_magic··on Tough luck, bosses, AI is coming for your job, too
>Maximilian Koehler, PhD candidate at ESMT, and Henry Sauermann, professor of strategy at ESMT, make the case for software-as-a-supervisor in a paper titled "Algorithmic management in scientific research."

I guess "AI is coming for the supervision of scientific research" doesn't have the same kick to it as the submissions title. Leadership is about people, not about tasks. But somehow I'm not surprised that this went over the head of "the register".

inductive_magic··on Southwest Boeing 737-800 flight from Denver loses engine cover
It’s almost like they had systemic issues with their quality control.
inductive_magic··on For young people, the job search has never been so miserable
I’m not just thinking about software engineering. There are lots of interesting positions which require any degree just as a basic requirement, especially in emerging fields, strategic roles, and generally in big companies. Maybe they’ll consider me qualified after I’ve built my own company, but if they encode the degree as a hard requirement the screening AI will just ditch my resume.

I don’t plan to stay in software for the rest of my life. Currently, my company develops knowledge engineering solutions, but in 5-10 years, I’d like to get some fresh air.

inductive_magic··on For young people, the job search has never been so miserable
As someone who “made it” without a formal degree: oh come on. If nobody opens doors for you, it takes a lot more than just intellect and grit to establish yourself. While I don’t have many good things to say about the established education systems, it’s beyond naive to act like “just do it on your own” is a scalable approach. Even today, some doors will stay closed for me, simply because I will always have to justify why I have no formal degree (and the doorkeepers are not incentivized to even listen since the pool of candidates is big), and some of those doors are highly interesting.
inductive_magic··on The baffling intelligence of a single cell: The story of E. coli chemotaxis
I always felt that the decrease in intelligence is a side effect of the necessary consensus mechanisms.

10 genius clones would still take on various roles/positions in the system, requiring some optimization with respect to alignment under time/energy constraints.

inductive_magic··on Brits left baffled by Brexit's 'not for EU' food labels
This is quite the misleading wording. Britains own standards remain largely unchanged, meaning that they did not reimplement the standards enforced by the eu via national law. It follows that the standards are lower than pre brexit.

/edit: apparently I stand corrected.

inductive_magic··on Brits left baffled by Brexit's 'not for EU' food labels
I’m not sure I follow.

The eu regulations no longer apply to food companies operating in the UK, as the UK no longer is in eu-jurisdiction.

The uk govt would have to re-implement them one by one, which a) would be a considerable effort and b) defeats the point of brexit, and thus likely come at political costs.

/edit: thanks for the responses, TIL.

inductive_magic··on The 160-year mystery of Europe's Ice Age 'queens'
>For decades, the idea that they were simply pornographic objects, designed primarily for the male gaze, has remained a popular explanation, alongside the view of the artworks as fertility figures.
inductive_magic··on Pg_vectorize: Vector search and RAG on Postgres
We're getting very solid results.

Instead of performing rag on the (vectorised) raw source texts, we create representations of elements/"context clusters" contained within the source, which are then vectorised and ranked. That's all I can disclose, hope that helps.

inductive_magic··on Company forgets why they exist after 11-week migration to Kubernetes (2020)
I have. There are multiple types of engineer which insist on migrating "legacy" (stable) systems to "state of the art" (cooler, modern, en vogue) tech.

You'd be surprised how many companies that maintained <20 vms migrated to k8s. The motivations include ordering a chaotic status quo, premature optimisation, young blood wanting to prove themselves, boredom, "its new so it must be better", "i want to try this" [...], you get the idea.

inductive_magic··on YC: Requests for Startups
There is a pretty big middle ground between “tech will solve every climate related problem on every axis” and “wanting to see us living in caves again”. Polar extremes are just childish.

inductive_magic··on Korea to welcome 'digital nomads' with new visa starting Jan. 1
Outside of the US? Absolutely. In Germany, you’re classified as rich starting at 60k gross income.
inductive_magic··on OpenAI Message to Board
As an observer not affiliated with ycombinator, your comment reads like shizoposting. Maybe it’s time for a walk.

I can’t speak for the reason why users might have flagged it, but these candidates come to mind: - the OpenAI debacle was discussed and theorized in depth for days - the gist contains absolutely nothing substantial

inductive_magic··on SpaceX Starship Super Heavy Project at the Boca Chica Launch Site
Dark humor and trolling are a false equivalence; while both are symptoms of coping mechanisms, dark humor alone doesn't inflict damage. Trolling does, by actively wasting the attention of other people. That's it. There is nothing romantic about it.

Anyone who doesn't value the attention of their fellow humans is either underdeveloped or evil.

inductive_magic··on Blackmagic Camera for iPhone
To add to the other commenters: when you tweak the sensors sensitivity for light, the aperture will compensate by letting less light in – unless it is fixed. So there should be no noticeable difference in brightness unless you set a fixed aperture.
