indlebe··on HackerSurfing: Free Housing and Food for Engineers Visiting SF
The relevance is that men currently dominate the hackerspace "scene". How men react to women that don't fit societal norms would tend to dictate how women in tech are going to be treated.

>The whole point is the original claim that men don't know how to act around women, as if there was some special way of dealing with women that makes them inherently different from men in a way that could go against the expectations of modern gender equality politics.

This is a general statement, there are deviations of course: Men tend to (often aggressively) challenge each others ideas, building off of the criticism. Women prefer a more nurturing approach. Hell, I would prefer a more nurturing approach :)

>get used to being treated the same way.

Can you elaborate on this? IMHO women should be treated equally when it makes moral sense. I.e. women's bathrooms need to be larger because of the various things they need to do in there, not just societal norm things but things like changing tampons, pads.

The menstrual cycle also affects productivity and is essentially a reoccurring medical issue that needs regular treatment.

As for the greater issue being discussed about the male centric nature of hackerspaces and hacker houses, alot of this has to do with proven social psychology facts about how the average man reacts to women that don't fit societal stereotypes. Lots of papers on that.

indlebe··on Luna – Hack your sleep
It's mainly the thermal component, which synthetic fibers aren't very good at. As far as studies go there are many on the effects of thermal regulation on sleeping, which synthetic fibres are very poor at. Wool in particular vastly increases sleep quality for these reasons and is used in the medical industry.
indlebe··on Luna – Hack your sleep
The cover itself is made entirely out of synthetic materials which has implications for quality of sleep. I love the idea but the cover portion needs to be natural fibers IMHO.

It's not a constructive comment. It's obvious that it has marketing benefits, and the poster's connotations were that there was something wrong with that, without giving a reason.
indlebe··on FBI Director: Sony’s ‘Sloppy’ North Korean Hackers Revealed Their IP Addresses
I would disagree on your point that "knee-jerk anti-US comments are karma gold here" on 2 notes, 1 that being anti-US-administration is not being anti-US, and 2 that most unsubstantiated comments that are critical of government actions almost always get down voted to oblivion.

Everyone knew that North Korea had it out for Sony, what's to stop a network security enthusiast from stirring the pot by performing the attack and planting "evidence" that it was coming from North Korea. I don't think it's far fetched to think that many young security enthusiasts would get excited to think about causing such a stir.

Scales can almost be self-learned and a good chunk of rock musicians don't know anything about music theory, and can't read music. Many excellent musicians and artists are autodidacts.

indlebe··on Linux-on-the-desktop pioneer Munich now considering a switch back to Windows
>But I definitely don't see Windows as being tightly focussed nor a single predictable entity.

This is perhaps because you know about the topic. The average user, because MS dominated most computer interactions that they've had, psychologically feels quite comfortable with it.

But I don't know if Linux is ready for the desktop yet. IMHO it's place is in the back-end.

Because Linux has more freedom it attracts developers/coders/programmers that also value freedom over vendor support. Any *nix flavor offers more hackability than MS.

And I think you'll find that the folks who use it think more freely when designing solutions as well.

It's too bad we won't know if there was a formal employee review process in place and if these employees were aware that they were "underperforming".

indlebe··on The New York Times Calls for Marijuana Legalization
>And yes, I've certainly had friends who are 40+ and barely hold down a job and live off friends and family because they are addicted to marijuana.

Is the evidence available strong enough to suggest that it's the marijuana causing this? Marijuana is often used by those suffering from depression and anxiety as a form of self-medication.

In BC, Canada the province's leading medical doctors have come out in strong support of legalization.

indlebe··on Ubuntu and open source help the City of Munich save millions
Definitely true. A wiki provides a good chunk of what I've seen folks in academia use SP for but I've seen other companies use primarily the office-type features (calendar, contacts, etc). But if you setup a wiki along with something like Zimbra and that could provide most of what SP offers and some extras.

Does anyone else find it strange that the definitions of binge and heavy drinking vary so much between the men and women groups? I would think that only body weight would be the heavy influence on this.

Is USA Today just being sexist?

indlebe··on BitTorrent Chat: The Want For Privacy
I think that given the relatively large existing userbase of the company and familiarity with end users it's notable. I think that end-users aren't quite ready to encrypt their gtalk chat, but could be willing to give something with an appealing UI a try (if it ends up having that).

indlebe··on Ask HN: How do I deal with the "unpaid overtime crowd"?
I'm in Canada and it's the same. My salary agreement says I get paid X for Y hours per week and is very vague about how overtime is treated. There is a mention that there may be "expected overtime" required on an occasional basis. I have never received compensation or time-off-in-leiu for overtime worked and during term (i work for a university) it's expected that I work 45-50 as opposed to the 35 that was agreed upon. 35 hours per week is summer only, and then I'd be lucky.
indlebe··on Ask HN: How do I deal with the "unpaid overtime crowd"?
>I would think it entirely obvious that if you work overtime you either get paid or take compensatory time off?

Obvious to whom? I haven't had an employer that finds this point obvious in more than 7 years.

indlebe··on How I learned to stop giving advice
>Basically, you're removing the implicit assumption that you know better than the person you're speaking with about what would work for their business.

Bingo. I feel that that from a psychological perspective the way you word advice can dictate how well it's received.

"I think you should do X", or even worse "You're doing that wrong, you should be doing X" isn't generally something that people digest hearing that well.

"I've done X in that exact situation and it worked really well for me" can be much more palatable.
