He likes making things? What's so wrong with that? There's pretension in that statement, or a lack thereof either.
indiekid··on How did my Google Reader logo become the "default"?
It should be noted that I actually never claimed a copyright, nor copyright protection on this. Creative Commons isn't a copyright. I'm also not mad about the uses of this image. I moreso just wanted to call out the fact that there was no attribution happening, as requested through the CC license.
indiekid··on How did my Google Reader logo become the "default"?
Sure. The "low res" version was 16x16, as it was the favicon. But what my post is referring to is that it was my scaled up version of the 16x16 icon that got picked up by the press, and not the official logo.
indiekid··on How did my Google Reader logo become the "default"?
My version was based on Google's 16x16 favicon. It was basically a scaled up version of that. Their "blocky" version did exist before, but mine was specifically a take on their favicon.
indiekid··on How did my Google Reader logo become the "default"?
Technically a "remix" would be defined as taking an original image, and making changes to that specific image.

In this case, I saw their favicon (16x16) and created a derivative work that was high resolution. I'm not complaining per se by any means...I really could care less. My statements on the license were to show that these derivations and uses might happen without permission, which they did in this case.

indiekid··on Apple iPhone 5 US Carrier Comparison Chart
That's not true. CDMA is just one band. The iPhone 5 supports multiple bands, including GSM bands and LTE bands. It also includes a SIM card slot. The iPhone 5 can be unlocked and a new SIM inserted.
indiekid··on Apple iPhone 5 US Carrier Comparison Chart
Corrected that part. Thanks.
indiekid··on Apple iPhone 5 US Carrier Comparison Chart
I can update the chart if someone finds a definitive price.
indiekid··on Apple iPhone 5 US Carrier Comparison Chart
It's not. That's why the iPhone 5 has GSM bands supported as well.
indiekid··on Apple iPhone 5 US Carrier Comparison Chart
No current network supports VoLTE so I'm not sure this can be confirmed yet.

Incentive to move multiple devices to a single plan. Reduces attrition.
indiekid··on Apple iPhone 5 US Carrier Comparison Chart
Unfortunately LTE-based devices on Sprint still won't be backwards compatible with the converted WiMAX towers as they only output in 2.3 GHz, 2.5 GHz and 3.5 GHz bands. The iPhone 5 specifically maxes out at a 2.1GHz band.
indiekid··on Apple iPhone 5 US Carrier Comparison Chart
Share everything is the only current option.

If you're going to Canada a lot, your best option would be the AT&T iPhone as the Verizon iPhone won't support Canadian LTE bands.

If a Verizon account has been in good standing for at least 60 days, supposedly they'll unlock your device: http://news.cnet.com/8301-30686_3-57361283-266/will-verizon-...
indiekid··on Apple iPhone 5 US Carrier Comparison Chart
The biggest drawback for Sprint is their abysmal LTE coverage. They bet too early on with WiMAX and lost out on the LTE train. It's going to be a good long while before they're caught up there.
indiekid··on How To Share an iPhone Screen Live Across the Internet
No question. I'd say the biggest issue there would be artifacts and frame rate. But jailbreaking is really the only other option, so I think it's not a bad plan.
indiekid··on How To Share an iPhone Screen Live Across the Internet
Thanks for pointing that out. I'll update the post.
indiekid··on Introducing 1% of Nothing
Corporate donations are indeed deductible, but generally speaking it's when the actual grant is made. If the grant is made when the stock has a low strike price, then there's really no benefit attached. If the grant is made when the strike price is high, then it's a significant cost on the business and dilutive to all parties involved.

The solution that 1% of Nothing provides is that it's the individual giving the shares instead, only exercised when there's an exit (IPO or acquisition).

indiekid··on Introducing 1% of Nothing
That's actually not true. The way this is structured, it's the founder's stock that they're actually giving up. They're diluting themselves.
indiekid··on Introducing 1% of Nothing
This is correct. (I'm one of the founders of 1% of Nothing)
indiekid··on Instagram raised $50M right before acquisition
It's very simple: Instagram had a responsibility to its employees to keep the lights on. Deals don't always go through. If FB would have walked away for any reason, they'd have to start up again on raising. It's also likely that TG was able to parlay the possible acquisition as a way to significantly drive up the price of the company. Brilliant, brilliant move if you ask me.
indiekid··on Why "More Bars in More Places" means shit for nothing now
Or it could just piggyback the existing connections that are taking place. It could run metrics against every attempted outgoing or incoming transfer. This would include mail checks, notifications, or any in-app data use. Sure, it wouldn't be "real time" if I pick up my phone "cold" but even just piggybacking on mail checks would make it work pretty well.
indiekid··on Why "More Bars in More Places" means shit for nothing now
No problem. I'm surprised that not many have brought this up before, which is why I did the post.
indiekid··on Urban Airship to shut down SimpleGeo
To be fair, that's not true at all. It was an acquisition in every sense of the word at the time. SimpleGeo, customers, tech and team were acquired (apart from us founders).
indiekid··on Urban Airship to shut down SimpleGeo
Can't say I agree with you about us "abandoning" our users. SimpleGeo was acquired by Urban Airship and the decision was made to discontinue the service. Disappointing, sure.
indiekid··on 1% Of Nothing Launches To Get Startups Donating Equity
I'd love to take credit for that "brilliant move", but it was totally accidental. Michael Birch came up with the name back in April!

As an aside, there's nothing missing in the funding rounds. In the current iteration, this is a pledge given by the founders, which means they don't actually give up their 1% until the very end (an acquisition).

indiekid··on 1% Of Nothing Launches To Get Startups Donating Equity
This is an idea, not a startup. It's about giving, which is universal. We would have launched it the day of the economic meltdown a few years ago and the message would have remained the same.
indiekid··on 1% Of Nothing Launches To Get Startups Donating Equity
Thanks for the comment, and I appreciate your honesty. When we say "1% of Nothing", it means (and generally has been assumed by most) that it refers to when the company starts. Clearly once the company has traction, it's not worth "nothing".

But the thing is - the name is to provoke an emotion. First it's to make you realize that you still keep 99% of your company, or even just 99% of the shares that you've been granted. Second it's to point out that at the early stages, it really is worth basically nothing on paper. Obviously there's far more value in it than that, but we're trying to stir up a reaction - good or bad - that can prompt a thought.

indiekid··on SimpleGeo puts 20 million places in the public domain.
We were careful to make sure the emphasis was on the non-restrictive license on uses of the data. This isn't claiming to be a "open places database" but maybe that can exist with this data as the backbone.

We are interested in doing a dump, but have some things to overcome first. Beyond that, this isn't just promoting our API. To be clear, we were only clarifying the license of the data with a blog post since there wasn't a clear license before. The community has turned this into a bigger deal, so this is by no means a self-promotion thing on our end.

indiekid··on SimpleGeo puts 20 million places in the public domain.
Correct, for now. We're currently evaluating a dump method as well, but haven't been able to put much time on it as we've been busy working on our API :)
