india··on Pasting Text Into Vim
Oh this is what that is! I accidentally reach this mode now and then and wonder how I got there and what it does. I must be accidentally pressing q: instead of :q ! This is great and useful. Thanks!
india··on A Skeptic Looks at Alternative Energy
The article notes that the total CO2 emission from India and China is rising and crossing the US. This is true but the per capita emission is still a fraction of that of US[1]. It will be impossible for China and India to compete if they aren't allowed the same per capita emission as the developed world. Per capita the US CO2 emission is huge.

india··on What if we hired writers like we hire developers
I might be an exception here but I much prefer the whiteboard. I have one in my room and I enjoy problem solving. Pressure environments really do not impact me much. And if you have a whiteboard in your office and you do use it for actual work and not just interviews, this gives me an excellent opportunity to check your quality as a future problem solving accomplice. It provides me a real if brief window into what working with you would be like and I like that.

Having said that, market realities are what they are and I will probably take a month off when I can afford it and put some substantial code out in the wild. Can't hurt to have both bases covered. I will still like to make the point in here that I will be doing this because of the perceived business climate not because I really want to.

india··on What if we hired writers like we hire developers
I write lots of code just for the sheer pleasure of it. None of it is publicly available though nor would I like to share it. Shipping code is a lot of work. The other day I wrote a quick app at my end to analyze and make sense of some parts of a project that I am about to take on. It does what it needs to but if I had to ship it, I would want to proof read it and describe it's purpose to a general audience and make it at least general enough to have some utility outside my immediate needs. That's a lot of work. I write a lot of code for fun and profit. Writing code and publishing/sharing code are two very different things.

Could you share your prompt?
india··on mruby
Think of it as a replacement for Lua. Something you will be able to include as a scripting subsytem in most other languages.
india··on IKamasutra: Apple Hates Brunettes
You have to pay apple 100 USD per annum for this privilege and despite that the app once installed will become unusable within the year.
india··on The Computing Trend that Will Change Everything
> As little as 2 years ago, $50-$75 was about the cheapest I could put a project on the internet, wired or wireless. Today its about $5.

How do you do it in $5 (or if that was an exaggeration, the cheapest possible cost)? I would like to do this.

Did anyone manage to get a copy of the sql file? A password analysis of a largely Indian audience could be pretty interesting.
india··on Comparing Indian states with countries
How did you arrive at that from the op? India's gini index has been quite stable[1]. India only makes about 50 billion or so a year in revenue from outsourcing[2].

india··on Robots Invent Their Own Spoken Language
There is a school of thought[1] that believes, that to a certain extent, this is true of natural human languages too! Some rules of grammar might just be hard-wired into the brain and not learnt as we grow up.

india··on Mental Illness and Startups
Depression is at the end of the day not a single illness. It's like cancer in that. Just like there are all kinds of cancer and what worked for yours might not work for others, so it is with depression. Behavioral activation might have been effective for you and you might have been able to snap out of it, most cases of depression don't have that luxory.
india··on Poll: Display points on comments?
Nah... Comments are sorted by score and freshness. On top of that it is a threaded discussion.
india··on Poll: Display points on comments?
Skimming allows me to draw my own signal to noise line in the sand which is important irrespective of however good the default signal is. I will never be interested in reading 204 comments about this topic however good they may be. I am definitely interested in reading the top 12 or so. This experiment is horrible.
india··on Poll: Display points on comments?
This is a nightmare. Please end this. There are 201 comments in this thread at this moment. I am not interested in reading 201 comments about this experiment. I am however very much interested in seeing what the top few most insightful comments in this thread are. That is a very important signal. Right now I am feeling blind as a bat...
india··on Find the "bug" - Two equals Four - a mathematical "paradox"
No infinity other than Aleph-naught appears to be involved in this. Why do you think the existence of other aleph numbers matters here?
india··on Are the American people obsolete?
Robots.

(Seriously, that productivity multiplier is not more than a decade away. Humanoid and mostly remotely controlled. Americans will put these to a far greater effect than Indians or Chinese.)

india··on Paul Graham is right (using AVC’s data)
No. The event being bimodal only implies that the probability is centered around two values, not that p =1 or p = 0 for those values. For example, take a biased coin that turns up head once in a million. This is bimodal with p(head) = 10^-6.

PG's argument appears to be that the error in your estimate of p is almost always larger than the value of p and one should invest as long as 2*p is also within the estimation error.

You really should give Slackware a try. None of that sophisticated package management nuisance[1] and everything just works!

I just want to point out that this does not apply to a lot of people outside the US of A. 24.5 USD for a single edition of a magazine is a lot of money in INR. And like many others, I don't find 3 USD worth of value in the pdf. The printed magazine will still be in my bedside rack 3 years down the line. Pdfs are more use, file and forget things.

india··on How I handle my mail
This site has some nefarious cloudflare thingy on it that tells me that my machine is infected. I am quite sure that is not the case. It will not let me access the website in question unless I enable third party cookies which is something I don't want to do. Please don't use services like cloudflare.

Sure. [2] talks about reprap's philosophy and is a good a place as any to start. Not many are talking about this yet but this is the new revolution. It has to be!

india··on Ask HN: After almost 30 years the romance is over - What now?
I think the "loop" is indeed moving on. The last real mini-revolution this side of the line probably were torrents. The whole social web is just wrong. It's centralized. It's not the web - it is a corruption of it. It is like the great minds who could design truly de-centralized, robust, reliable and truly social structures have all just vanished. There are so many difficult and important problems around but no one wants to solve them just because there is a huge ??? before the profit step. It is indeed a bit sad.

But there is some real fascinating stuff happening in hardware. We have freaking humanoid robots and private rockets. And nothing excites me more about the future than 3d printers. And there is a real and true to the soul open source like effort going on in there. Reprap, makerbot and that awesome 75k inr 3d printer from china... printers that can print themselves! Hardware specs that are shared and re-shared. Ideas and insights shared with gay abandon. No major patent threats anywhere in sight so far. It is the free world.
