Redmine's models do all sorts of computationally interesting things[1]. What does business tier mean?

india··on Leaving .net
This is completely true and exactly the place I am stuck at. I have a product with major parts in RoR, that the business end user loves but the IT just won't let through. I have to now learn asp.net mvc and port everything over to it. I dread going through that.
india··on Why Django Sucks, and How we Can Fix it [slides]
Thanks!
india··on Heard of Google Instant? Well, I built YouTube Instant.
Why the shortened url? I thought HN had them banned for submissions. Full url: http://feross.net/instant/
india··on Why Django Sucks, and How we Can Fix it [slides]
Is there a non scribd version of this pdf? Scribd says "all download limits exceeded from your ip" and won't let me download or read anything beyond slide 26.
india··on Why Text in All Caps is Hard for Users to Read
Hindi doesn't have capital letters either. I think we recognize a name more by it's context than the case of the first letter. If I found a hindi word I didn't recognize, I would still be able to tell if it were a name or not. Perhaps caps exist for purely stylistic reasons.

I wonder what would happen if someone did a design study of showing all caps vs sentence case text to people who have never seen English. Wonder which one would they say looks better.

india··on RubyDoc.info: Auto-generated RubyGems and GitHub library docs
It's back up. From the site: "If you've arrived here from yardoc.org/docs or rdoc.info, don't be alarmed. We've finally merged the two sites just like we said we'd do, And we made sure none of your project URLs were harmed."

Excellent! I think one of the biggest wins of rails 3 is the partial undoing of fragmentation that the community was going through. Wins all over the place.

india··on Rails 3.0: Release candidate 2
My pitch: Improved speed and security all over the place, a saner mailing solution, lazy queries and first class support for rails engines. (A/B testing whole engines out kind of things are what I find exciting.)

Having said that, this version upgrade is half a paradigm shift. Living through it has cleared up a lot of mvc and good code concepts and ideas for me. I can think of numerous ways my 2.3 rails code could be better thanks to going through the transition. That alone is worth a couple of weeks of dev time, imho.

india··on Charles Stross: Where we went wrong
Exactly. Von Neumann architecture, null string termination in C and lack of encryption in TCP/IP are all arguably the things we got spectacularly right. All these three are efficiency + simplicity vs features + complexity trade offs. Imagine how much extra energy and latency and points of failure would be introduced into the system if almost every network device was required to encrypt/decrypt every packet. Naughty things like error correction and oh a zillion tricks our everyday game programmer is using would be impossible.
india··on The Start-up from Hell
While that google search does confirm that this is a somewhat popular notion, this paper[1] seems to reject the idea.

india··on Ruby 1.9.2 Released
This is insane. I have just had to explain 3 people on #ruby-lang why my error log has 1.9.1 in it if I am running purely 1.9.2.

This tangentially breaks the principle of least surprise. I can't see any good reason for doing this. This will result in unnecessary head aches during debugging for months to come.

india··on Finally, Hacker Monthly Subscriptions
So in India, the print will cost me about 10 grand per year and the pdf a grand. I wish I were in college. I could just get my library to subscribe to it.
india··on Ask HN: What Vim Plugins do you use?
Other than the usual ones mentioned here, in a rails specific environment, I use rsense[1], acp[2], rails.vim[3]. This works really well for me and I would recommend it to any rails developer.

india··on If Calvin Took Ritalin (A Tragedy In Four Panels)
Just in case, it's not obvious to someone, that comic is built using panels from different actual C&H. The first time I came across it I was intrigued how I had missed this one and went out hunting for it's publishing date.
india··on How Y Combinator Is Remaking Silicon Valley in Its Image
Google is not helping much with this. What are "rolling funding rounds"?
india··on A Joke iPhone Sticker Turns Into a Business
Fair enough but url shorteners break the web[1][2]. That is quite clearly not a good trade-off. I avoid url shorteners unless they be absolutely necessary.

india··on Clojure's n00b attraction problem
> I've begun work on a tutorial to get people up and running with Clojure, but I will be recommending Emacs in it.

Oh no. I hope I do not come off as a troll but this is exactly why I never could get started with any of the lisps. I can't stand emacs or netbeans or eclipse. This a personal taste for me but a very strong one. They all just feel wrong to me. Associating a sanctioned ide with a language is a bad idea. It brings unnecessary baggage for a new user. By closely associating your language to an ide and by having every tutorial throw it in my face, your community is just creating an unnecessary entry barrier for me. Please consider making the tutorial ide independent.

india··on Clojure's n00b attraction problem
Oh cool! Maybe you can help me here... The part I could not stand about java was getting tied up to an IDE. Every tutorial, book and "experienced" java programmer in college seemed to insist on one (mostly eclipse or netbeans). That just is a strcit no no for me. Btw, this is the same thing that's prevented me from getting on with the whole lisp family of languages. They all ask me to either work in some kind of a sandbox or learn emacs.

I want to get started in a way that allows me to code and ship a hello world program in vim/notepad (ie in a n IDE independent fashion) from day zero. I can handle complexity and steep learning curves. I cannot handle not knowing and fully understanding whatever it is that the IDE is simplifying for me. And I don't want to be treated like a kid. Tell me how to get my hello world app into production the same way people shipping code in that language do as soon as possible. Is there any way for me to shed my java and lisp newbieness?

india··on Is it Now Acceptable to Require JavaScript?
For me it's mostly sites tracking way too much information at my end. It just creeps me out. Consider the kind of information tracked by google[1]. There is no way to dodge stuff like that other than noscript.

india··on Xz
Also notably, slackware has shifted it's packaging format to a xz tar since the last two releases. This validates xz as a good replacement for gz/bz2.
india··on I laughed at Posterous, but they proved me wrong
What about spoofed emails? Come to think of it, how does posterous handle that? One way would be to mail the user back asking them to reply to confirm and then recording the details of the genuine mail server. Does posterous do that?

On the whole there is a lot to get wrong in this authentication method. I would prefer if this doesn't spread to other web apps.

india··on India makes good on vow to sabotage ACTA
I am an Indian and I can point you to a number of incidents involving banning of books, movies and jailing of artists. People jailed for posting anti Sonia Gandhi messages on Orkut[1], banning of the comic Savita Bhabhi[2], seizing of Ask Me servers pre trial[3] are recent relevant examples off the top of my head.

india··on India makes good on vow to sabotage ACTA
This is exactly why I would like to see some new voices on the Indian tech scene. We have got some of the most absurd IT laws and processes of any country. Privacy might as well be absent from the tech debate here. Our record on freedom of speech is abysmal. I so wish there was at least someone influential in India voicing these concerns.
india··on One day, all news will look like this
This is a very worrying trend. Consider this one from India - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtDb_vLZ0wc I find it wrong on many levels. It is a drastic oversimplification of the events of the day and in some sense, implicitly portrays the pilot's job as something the newscaster could have done better.

News media has so far been vastly deficient in how they present technical and scientific matters and stuff like this will only exaggerate that problem.

india··on Twitter launches own shortener t.co
URL shortners break the web in many ways.

Link rot, link hijack, it takes longer to reach the page, additional point of failure and domain based algorithms break. In other words, plague.

india··on Unix toolbox
Cool... It even has fortune.
india··on UTorrent For Linux Is Coming, Finally
In that case, it is already pretty remarkable that 3254 from a group of people who currently can't even use your product want it to be developed for them. If that happened to a product I were making, I sure as hell would begin targeting that platform.
