imesh··on Do Women Give Up Competing More Easily? Evidence from the lab and math Olympiad
I think there are very few subjects where natural talent will be more productive than drive and work ethic. Not sure how you could test or prove something like this though.
imesh··on New species of ancient human discovered in the Philippines: Homo luzonensis
That's a rosy colored view of how we mixed. Maybe there was that, but one thing I would bet on is rape. Probably a mixture.
imesh··on Professional Decline Comes Sooner Than People Think
Age comes faster than people expect. People say they will start saving later, turn around and they are already 35 (Or older) and later came sooner than they expected. I'm 33 now and have been saving like you since I was 28, but I only had that realization of how fast time moves because until 27 I was trying to be a professional athlete. One day I woke up and realized it was too late for that dream and I didn't want the same thing to happen with retirement.
imesh··on It's time to switch to a four-day working week, say two experts
Two problems: I can't afford a 1967 size small home anywhere near me, nor can I also support 3 kids and a non working spouse.
imesh··on The decline of the family has unleashed an epidemic of loneliness
That seems heavily female biased. It's more realistic that 1/100 men is right for a woman and 1/100 women is right for a man, but the woman will at least meet a 100 men whereas the man will only meet 10 women. It would explain the amount of sexless young men.
imesh··on Is it boring working in Web Development startups?
I find it boring, but that's why I'm trying to get out of the industry and find an alternate career. Software development has broke me.
imesh··on Career advice I wish I’d been given when I was young
This. I've reverse engineered not only my career but other huge parts of my life from profiles on hacker news.
imesh··on Career advice I wish I’d been given when I was young
People should do what they want to do. You don't want to be anybody else otherwise you would be that person. I know how I would do my life over, but I don't think anyone else other than me would like to have my current life nor my hypothetical do-over life.
imesh··on On Oliver Sacks and His Obsession with Weightlifting
I feel the part of weightlifting that makes it more dangerous is probably why weightlifters are less injured than powerlifters. Weightlifting is technically hard, and most weightlifters start from day one with a coach. Powerlifts are "simple," and as such most powerlifters don't start with a coach and end up doing things wrong and hurting themself.
imesh··on Do people become happier after 40?
Than why does it look like their happiness is only a few percentage points different than men?
imesh··on The Healing Power of Gardens
Sort of off topic: One of the more frustrating things about going out in nature where I live at least, is seeing the pattern of invasive plants over and over again. I can identify every plant in my area, an area that would have been full of thousands of different trees and bushes now has repeating landscape of about two dozen different plants.
imesh··on Behind the Buzz: How Ketamine Changes the Depressed Patient's Brain
You didn't do enough. At the dose I tried I don't see it as a party drug either, I didn't move.
imesh··on Less Pizza, More Yoga: E-Sports Embraces Traditional Training Methods
I disagree. I wrestled at a DI level in college, it was grueling, it was incredibly hard, some days I hated it. But it wasn't the same kind of burn out that I feel from software development. I don't wake up excited for work the way I would wake up excited to train. It's just different. The harder you work the better you get in sport. You may work harder at software development and become a better developer but the gains you may get aren't so concrete, you don't win, you likely won't even get a raise.
imesh··on Two men are trying to become the first person to cross Antarctica alone
If you need to be hiking all day for months to lose weight, you are ptobably going to gain it all back once you stop.
imesh··on Crime is a Family Affair
It has been working, just not quickly. Weed is legal across the whole west coast.
imesh··on The ‘Real You’ Is a Myth
But what if it's your self-delusion making you think your non-delusion is a delusion?
imesh··on A DMT trip 'feels like dying' – and scientists now agree
FWIW DMT is far more pleasant and far less of a hangover than the experience you're describing.
imesh··on My dad’s resume and skills from 1980
Is this a troll?
imesh··on How LeBron James' new public school is the first of its kind
No, it's opposite of Britain, most countries are in line with the USA in this regard, including former British Colonies like Australia. Britians history is the only reason their version sense, it's very unintuitive.
imesh··on “I Have a Secret. My Father Is Steve Jobs”
I'm not saying he wasn't an awful father, but he actually did leave her a multi-million dollar inheritance according to Wikipedia
imesh··on How LeBron James' new public school is the first of its kind
Why not just public? It makes perfect sense.
imesh··on Where did the Microsoft tech stack disappear?
The cost is something too. I enjoy developing in the Microsoft environment, but by using Microsoft you actually have to pay for your tools.
imesh··on The most relaxing vacation you can take is going nowhere
No, the best vacation depends on you and what you want when you go on your vacation. Sometimes I want to ride my bike as far as I can for multiple weeks, sometimes I want to go to a new part of the world, sometimes I want to go to a resort and sometimes I want to stay home.
imesh··on The childless, aging future
Interesting conclusion since people aren't healthier longer, they just exist longer. People still go senile and have the same health complications they used to, we just now keep them alive through the aid of medicine. It's even a worse situation with the amount of obesity related issues the current generation is facing.
imesh··on The Food of My Youth
Obviously I haven't lived everywhere in the USA but in most states if you are poor enough to only have $5 to spend on food to feed your kids you qualify for SNAP benefits which will give you a few hundred dollars for food.
imesh··on Half of ICOs Die Within Four Months After Token Sales Finalized
Ignoring tax evasion and other white collar crimes, selling drugs alone is a $36 trillion dollar a year industry.
imesh··on Survival of the Richest
Getting a high security bunker built to your specifications sounds like a lot of fun to me.
imesh··on How to get kids to pay attention
I don't think it's something you have to solve, it will happen naturally. All kids do this and most tend to stop by adulthood.
imesh··on Canada legalises recreational cannabis use
It does work that way but I don't know if it was intentional, acetaminophen is a very valid anti-inflammatory and (non-opiod based) painkiller.
imesh··on America’s Teens Are Choosing YouTube Over Facebook
Im not a teen, but they might just text.
