imaginenore··on How I Took an API Side Project to 250M Daily Requests
Just some rough calculations. Assuming the worst-case scenario, everyone in the highest tiers (the cheapest per request), 250M daily requests means he makes

400 * 250M / 320K = $312,500 per month.

Or $3.75M per year.

Not counting the expenses.

imaginenore··on I'm a creep. I'm sorry
Damn, that's a good apology. The guy seems to be working on fixing his behavior.
imaginenore··on Poverty is not a personal choice, but a reflection of society
As a really poor immigrant to the US who succeeded financially, I can tell you with absolute certainty, poverty in the US (barring mental illness cases or health issues) is the result of poor choices. Most of it stems from society's lack of planning for the future of the young people. Young people are consistently being told lies like "you can be anything you want", forgetting to tell them that most of the fun choices lead to very low pay in the future. Young people regularly send $50-250k on financially useless degrees. They like, say, art, so they spend 4 years studying something they could learn in a library or on YouTube, only to find out that the market for painters is crowded and tiny.

We need much better guidance for the young.

I think it since got surpassed by UHMWPE, which has a tensile strength of ~20GPa. They make cheap body armor out of it.

imaginenore··on Easiest Path to Riches on the Web? An Initial Coin Offering
Oh, those poor bitcoin/ethereum holders, they only gained a few hundred/thousand percent in the last couple of years.
imaginenore··on Easiest Path to Riches on the Web? An Initial Coin Offering
You can also convert to Bitcoin, then sell via localbitcoins.com.

LocalEthereum.com is being developed too.

imaginenore··on Backblaze lost over 13TB of my data
Maybe a binary order of magnitude.

Sia = $2/TB/month.

Amazon Glacier = $4/TB/month.

Time4VPS Storage = $4/TB/month.

Backblaze B2 = $5/TB/month.

imaginenore··on Backblaze lost over 13TB of my data
How is he an asshole? He was sold the service, and he used it properly, the terms of service were followed. If anything, this story shows that Backblaze sucks at providing said service.
imaginenore··on Backblaze lost over 13TB of my data
Backblaze supposedly has B2 storage, which is $5/TB/month, and they claim it's redundant.

Angry people would quickly move them to the side.

Much more worrisome is snipers shooting industrial transformers, causing massive damage while spending close to nothing.

If you're going to make assumptions, you might as well just assume the MP3 magically appears on your device.

You see, I can USB-plug almost any Android device into any Windows or Linux machine, and transfer any files either way without installing any software. It just works.

Even with Dropbox, what if it's a 10GB file? Are you going to upload and then download it? Do you not see how ridiculous that is?

imaginenore··on iPad Pro
Nah, it will take them another decade to make the simplest tasks, like copying an MP3 to the device, at least a bit reasonable. iTunes alone stops me from using Apple phones and tablets.
imaginenore··on Déjà vu so extreme that I can’t tell what’s real
All they had to do is to ask you to write down the answer before you heard it. And then compare to the actual answer.
imaginenore··on Déjà vu so extreme that I can’t tell what’s real
Unless you write it down, it could simply be your brain fooling itself, pretending you took a mental note. I had the exact same hypothesis, and so I started writing down the details of my hyper-real dreams. So far none of it came back in the déjà vu form.

In fact, if it turned to be real, it would have far reaching consequences on the nature of reality.

imaginenore··on MapD Open Sources GPU-Powered Database
Your claim of I/O bound is probably only true for very large databases where indexes don't fit into tens/hundreds of GB of RAM typically available.

Modern SSDs, even at the consumer level are already doing 2.5GB/s reads and 100K IOPs.

I'd say most database setups are CPU limited.

Islam is not a race, it's a religion, so he is not racist at all in his comment. You don't choose the color of your skin, but you have a choice which religion to follow, or not follow any.
imaginenore··on Xenko Game Engine 2.0 released
If I only had time to learn another game engine. But I'd rather spend it making games with Unreal or Unity, and I doubt Xenko has something important they don't.
imaginenore··on Color Night Vision (2016) [video]
It's likely pitch black to the human eye, except for the stars. We have Sony A7s, which goes to ISO 409000, and it already is close to night vision, way more sensitive that my eyes, especially paired with a f1.4 lens.

This camera goes to ISO 5 million, which is awesome.

imaginenore··on Intel’s first Optane SSD: 375GB that you can also use as RAM
It's possible the technology actually is 1000x, but it would be really dumb of Intel to release it as such, instead of milking it for years slowly creeping to 1000x.
imaginenore··on Smashing Magazine just got 10x faster
Why is it newsworthy? Smashing Magazine is a static website. Putting it on a CDN is the most obvious, most efficient, and the cheapest optimization.
