Nominative determinism
Thank you for putting it so well.
RIP LiveLeak. Its loss is a tragedy that is hard to quantify. Perhaps a catastrophe, that nobody will ever understand the full invisible scale of.
Please put a little more fucking thought into this than "why don't we just get rid of them, then they'll go away".
Completely aside from the morality of it, giving into that urge is exactly how we got here, and exactly how this spirals much, MUCH further out of control.
The far bigger part of the job would be rewriting all 800 custom extractors, then perpetually maintaining them against constant, silent, often adversarial breaking changes in each one.
Using Rust instead of Python would cut the very fat long tail of contributions that makes most of this viable, and would doom this project more than most.
But I know that in making that calculation, I personally couldn't give less of a shit about whether or not they released Half-Life 3, when they've been the patron saint of gaming on Linux. Which they haven't just barely saved from oblivion, but been the biggest single force in turning into an actual viable competitor.
I hope I don't need to explain why that matters for reasons that go beyond whether or not you are personally directly invested in gaming on Linux.
Their strongest recent competition (Epic) has not just been indifferent to gaming on Linux, they've actively done enormous damage to it: they've bought exclusive rights to popular mainstream games which fully supported Linux, and removed that support.
Though the picture is further complicated in that the other big competitor, GOG.com (run by CD Projekt, the Polish developers of the Witcher series), are easily the best citizens altogether, most importantly for their commitment to DRM-free distribution. But they also aren't the ones doing Proton.
Besides Desktop TD, the other main classic of that subgenre is Bubble Tanks TD: https://armorgames.com/play/4962/bubble-tanks-tower-defense
This is history that deserves to be remembered.
Before I started smoking (relatively late in life), I didn't really grasp that smoking is non-trivially immediately psychoactive.
Like I thought it was something that you did just to do, and then it quietly wormed some sort of hook into your brain that made you feel bad if you stopped, but the whole thing happened entirely "subconsciously".
Maybe I was just especially retarded, and most people properly understand this.
It reminds me how much of the "panic!" signal I've been really starting to see explode in the last ~24h, which humans are highly sympathetically attuned to when they suddenly see it spreading everywhere around them, is just from a sheer mass of other idiots who actually don't know anything either coming online on the issue, and reflects internet meme virality, and only very indirectly the uptick in actual danger (ie, from having been loosely following the outbreak, prior to this latest popularization).
Still looks pretty fucking bad, though.
2. Non-dogshit UI
We wuz, etc
Giving some particular construct in your language the official name "Concepts" is just unbelievably fucking atrociously stupid. Inexplicably greedy and needlessly destructive.
Say what you will about Haskell's user-hostile jargon, but even they had the sense to rename a concept that was originally called "Idiom". (now "Applicative")
There's also an anime series about space junk, 'Planetes' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planetes) -- which does the best job I've seen in any visual media of getting orbital mechanics right, and is generally somewhere between 'The Expanse' and 'Seveneves' on the scale of sci-fi "hardness". And, as far as anime goes, is relatively light enough on "anime bullshit" to be watchable even if you're normally not into that.

The dividing line that's emerged is "civic nationalism" (alt-lite) vs "ethnic nationalism" (alt-right)
ie: anybody can be an American provided they adopt the right values and behave as an American, vs only white people can be American and everybody who is not white (+ jews) needs to be made to leave.
Needless to say, the latter tendency is especially packed with literally textbook fascism.

Let's not.
I would highlight https://reddit.com/r/europeannationalism/ as the very worst of it.
They've also taken over the mod teams of extremely large and supposedly politically neutral subs like https://reddit.com/r/uncensorednews/ (every single mod there is also a mod of /r/europeannationalism).
Check https://reddit.com/r/againsthatesubreddits/ for a running log of much, much more.
And for every one open nazi, there's a dozen more concern-trolling, brigading, vote-manipulating, and quietly recruiting more people towards the fucking genocidal far-right.
It's getting so bad that at it will soon be hard to defend Reddit's admins from charges of complicity.
... I guess liquidity?
How about art with pretenses towards realism/naturalism (which is not all art, nor should it be) can be more enjoyable for living up to that? And learning something is not a hostile act of self-indulgent performance by the learner, even when that learning might change their perspective on a piece of entertainment media.
Extremely tangential, but does anybody actually love javascript? We've been in a captive situation with this deeply flawed hack for 20 years.
Once WebAssembly is mature enough to fulfill its promise, and after that once we've burned through the generation born into this JS captivity, is anyone going to want use it anymore?
Like, if it were magically possible to use anything else natively in the browser today, would the next big thing be another 10 million person-hours put into yet another angle on working around JS's flaws... or something in another less clunky language entirely, never to return?
Can you expand on this?
