ilovecookies··on What Dreams May Come
I reeeally hope so but I wouldn't count on random people giving me money at all. Hope you are not saying that to make me feel guilty about not giving $$$ to you.

"Even as I sit here and look at what happened with this today I am torn between actually using the donations to pay off our housing and transportation debts along with my final resting place or just giving the money to someone else who needs it more than I do."

Yes, you should be.

If you are really in a dire situation maybe you should look into getting money from the government by participating in research and stuff like that. That's what I would do if I were in your situation.

Hope your last time on this planet is good. This is a process everyone will have to experience eventually I'm afraid. No matter if you are young or old. Crazy thing is that everything will just keep moving on, your kids will grow up, maybe have kids of their own and eventually, in a long time, themselves face the same situation. It's an endless cycle these lives. Even if we can't recognize that because we're stuck in the middle of it trying to make money for our future or something else we aren't sure about.

This is a really good book by the way. Helped me get through the hard times. Although im not sure the english translation is that good.

Good luck. Hope your funding goes well and that it will make you happy.

misanthrope?

I would rather say realist. We live in a society based upon democracy and free will right? I'm not ashamed for my statements.

Just the face temperature of the sun, probably would melt your face off as soon as you turned on the thing.

This is also what I'm thinking. Yes, this is probably a terrible experience he is going through, but if people 'really' wanted to help maybe giving to a cancer research institution or donating to people that have 'real' needs, like putting food on the table or access to fresh water. Wouldnt that honestly be more fair and better than to a guy who needs to pay of his mortgage today?

I mean the average time to pay of a loan is something like 15 years, and given his situation he could probably try to apply for a better deal from the company where he took his loan (decrease monthly amortization costs but increase loan period for example?).

Personally, I will not get hooked by this story and give him money. But point me to the nearest cancer research institution that has made tangible results and I would be happy do donate.

But also, out of personal reasons due to the crappy humans nature we all have, I guess I'm kind of jealous that this guy will be making tons of money on something so bad. I'm a young guy, my girlfriend (my first real love) died last year, and honestly, noone gave a fuck about that.

Even though I feel for your situation... Seriously this has nothing to do with hacker news. This is more of a reddit post that has snuck in here somehow.

Perhaps I had a little bit of luck. But this shows you can easily get to 256 with little dedication. After which you can start to puzzle things together.

Also about your autoit "analysis" 36 + 150 + 13 != 162

ilovecookies··on Linus Torvalds: “I'm happily hacking on a new save format using ‘libgit2’”
While one could say that this is about savefiles for games, I would say it's implications could more be about savefiles for software projects. If you are building the game in LUA, of course LUA is going to be the preferred way to save your game in since you are already using LUA objects and interpreting files in that language will be easy to integrate.

If you ever used maven xml configs, java object marshalling or c# xml you would understand the pains of using xml as a file format for software projects and data representation. You have to find a solution that is language agnostic, neither LUA or JSON is.

The next part is the funniest though...

As good as this gun would be as a rocket pack engine, the Russians built one that would work even better. The Gryazev-Shipunov GSh-6-30 weighs half as much as the GAU-8 and has an even higher fire rate. Its thrust-to-weight ratio approaches 40, which means if you pointed one at the ground and fired, not only would it take off in a rapidly expanding spray of deadly metal fragments, but you would experience 40 gees of acceleration. This is way too much. In fact, even when it was firmly mounted in an aircraft, the acceleration was a problem:

[T]he recoil … still had a tendency to inflict damage on the aircraft. The rate of fire was reduced to 4,000 rounds a minute but it didn't help much. Landing lights almost always broke after firing … Firing more than about 30 rounds in a burst was asking for trouble from overheating …

But if you somehow braced the human rider, made the craft strong enough to survive the acceleration, wrapped it in an aerodynamic shell, and made sure it was adequately cooled... ... with a GSH-6-30, you could jump mountains.

This is seriously turning more and more into reddit.

That plane has to be quite sturdy to fire that gun. 10 tonnes from the front and four from the back.
ilovecookies··on Yahoo's COO Walks Out With $20M Stock Bonus, Plus $40M For 15 Months' Work
Considering the stock went up 150% would say so, from a PR point of view, definitely not.
ilovecookies··on Yahoo's COO Walks Out With $20M Stock Bonus, Plus $40M For 15 Months' Work
This is only news because it has to do with a major tech company and not a minor one.

It's probably some of the google stocks the company had that's the stock bonus. Comparing to the income CEOs in the tech industry this is actually nothing special at all, unless we talk about major companies, like yahoo. Four of the lower CEOs at google got about 128 million this year.

CEOs of other major tech companies are billionaires in NETWORTH but at least they now the PR value of not giving their CEOs this much money. Examples of billionaires that have a relatively low pay, Sergei and Larry (1$), Steve Ballmer (1 million $) and the amazon CEO (about 50k $).

Isn't the problem more connected to the hardware and the fact that most people are already willingly using tons of applications who are giving information about you to companies like google (maps) twitter, facebook etc. If you install the apps with consent on your phone, and those apps have access to the linux or ios kernel runtime and syslogs then you're basically fucked from start.

StackOverflow is good is some ways, but if you have a solid base knowledge of programming you shouldn't really be looking there all the time in the first place. It's a great website but it's also definitely made coders lazier.

It would be interesting if a website like hackernews hides the number of upvotes and then see how people will vote. I'm suspecting some kind of herd mentality when it comes to upvotes in general to be honest.
ilovecookies··on Is Wikipedia for Sale?
Funny that no-one mentioned the fact that the page had a brazilian flag. Musicians has the right by law to veto biographies and personal information written about them in brazil, this also applies to brazilian webpages. It could be understandable that these people would make out a big chunk of the customers for a company as wiki-pr hence the page's Portuguese translation.
