ilovecookies··on The Difference Between Rationality and Intelligence
Post nytimes on hackernews...hmmf

The problem set was piss in terms of intelligence had a false assumption of a rational/intelligence dichotomy. Of course it's more likely that she is a bankteller than a bankteller plus (insert whatever). This is probability theory 101. But hey, it is nytimes you're reading so what would one expect anyway.

I was more thinking in these lines:

How rational is it for someone to be outspoken against nuclear energy when there hardly exist any real valid renewable alternative to substitute that energy source to begin with? Do it like Germany and rely on the importation of oil from Russia?

ilovecookies··on Decentralization is about diversity
From a more philosophical point of view; the idea that everyone should become a programmer is honestly just plain wrong. I like what these people are doing but I don't think this could/should be done for more serious projects considering the amount of hacking that's going on at more centralized services like google-drive and dropbox. But if that's not their aim then that's all good I guess.

About shared data, can't you just use google spreadsheets?

ilovecookies··on Functional programming can save billions
got alot of spare time?
ilovecookies··on If goto statements are bad why does linux src have more than 10k of them?
Seems like they use it for most of the error handling, that's true. Almost as many of these as there are switch statements (and 1/3 of if statements). It would be cool if someone could analyze keywords from different projects. Maybe one could give that as use cases in universites instead, that would seem to be alot more practical.

EDIT: Upon closer inspection it seems like even if 'gotos' make everything nastier the extra added performance is worth it.

How many times has this been on HN..

I know it's more times but I haven't found those threads..

ilovecookies··on How taking pictures through windows can inadvertently reveal your location
You might reveal your location but the person spying on you would have to be a stalker and a total creep, who basically have no life and nothing interesting to do. That's more scary than taking pictures with reflections IMO
ilovecookies··on Hands on with Ubuntu 14.04
Been using linux distros and ubuntu 12.04 for about 2 years now. Linux is the shit but ubuntu sucks IMO. Very poor customization possibilites. Heavily reliant on python 2.7. Very bad support for other window managers than unity, dont ever try to mess with multiple window managers on ubuntu, it will ruin your week. With WAY FASTER alternative systems such as arch, funtoo, gentoo, knoppix and even debian. I have a hard time understanding how ubuntu could have gained the traction it has among developers.
ilovecookies··on The Fall of Hacker Groups
Well sure but it the net was definitely more oriented to ppl that was into hacking / coding back then compared to now. Mainstream wasn't the net back then.
ilovecookies··on Ask HN: CTO wants me to leave
you should also read what OP is posting here in the thread.

" > if you have hired a CTO who is better at engineering than you

He doesn't do development himself(he does review everything before it goes into the production branch), simply that he knows better developers than I.

I have re-written much of our original code to a point where it is of good quality, both in it's intended role and in readability. "

The CTO hasn't written any production code so his software skills are questionable. The OP belives his current code is of good quality right now.

ilovecookies··on Ask HN: CTO wants me to leave
About you code. Alot of coders use different naming/formatting so that's an NON issue when it comes to your code. Also your the freakin co-founder... that CTO should have more important things to worry about than if the founder is writing camel-case / low-dash variables or functions. Testing is also optional, I know there are lots of coders that has written tons and tons of really useful code with little testing that works flawlessly. The main reason for using testing is maintainability, but since you are in the early stages of development you will usually end up rewriting your system later anyway, to a better / more secure version.
ilovecookies··on Ask HN: CTO wants me to leave
Most people assume their colleagues are their peers. Not all management people though, but that's the best type of CEO/CTO an employee could have IMO.
ilovecookies··on Ask HN: CTO wants me to leave
Interesting. I was just thinking, do the CTO and the CEO know each other from before? Was it the CEOs idea to hire this CTO maybe? If that's the case maybe this was planned between the CTO and CEO.

Since you're the founder with the focus on the tech aspect (basically you should be the CTO) what was the reason for hiring the CTO in the first place? A CTO that's obviously not a better software developer than you. Hard facts, but maybe it was your partner who planned this since the very beginning.

After you've talked to your lawyer you could possibly strike a deal with the CTO / CEO and go become an employee if you are interested in just keeping on coding for the company. Maybe getting a bonus that if you decide to leave or still be on the companies payroll provided that the company reach a certain revenue / value etc.

Well yes I realize that you cannot blame america for capitalism, capitalism didn't even originate in america. It has been around for several centuries.

However the output of the american media in the 2000s and 2010s, a media that is heavily influenced by capitalism has definitely shaped the internet and the worldly culture into its current form.

The internet is an amorphous mass of people, yes. But in the earlier days not everyone participated like you are "programmed" to do in our current society. Comparisons could be made with the early aviators or sailors, it is true that these things existed and were new in their relative eras and that everybody knew about them. But that doesn't mean everybody felt the need to explore these technologies. So, as the type of people changes that usually uses the internet, (from students, software people and mostly male teenagers that have an urge to explore it, to more corporate people and just about anybody) the content also naturally changed and the mental/emotinal rewards those original people once got when they visited 'teh intehrnetz' are not the same as they once were.

Look at a game like Utopia for example (you know the old browser based strategy game that was created by mehul). It was all about calculations and working in synergy with other people from all over the world (also somewhat about backstabbing, abusing and hacking of course). It was one of the bigger online browser games there was back then. If you compare to current online games like farmville and candycrush it's nothing the same and the types of people are nothing the same, why? Because it was different sorts of people that usually browsed the web back then. So yes, there was and has always been an original culture online that has gradually been merged with the mainstream people which has evolved internet into its' present form, and I don't disagree or agree with that, I just state it as a fact.

ilovecookies··on The Fall of Hacker Groups
In my opinion it's too much "american" media and societys individualistic culture that has spread like a disease on the internet and kind of destroyed much of the original 90s internet culture. And thereby also the safehaven for the hacker people. The one place where many people felt at home has been stripped from them though this "capitalization" of the internet in my opinion. I loved playing around with the net before it got big. Remembering the times I played age of empires with random Chinese ppl and build websites with html where i uploaded my favorite games for people to download (had almost 1000 downloads at one of my sites!) or when I "hacked" games by alternating attributes in their config files and posted results on various forums... This was when the net was free and interesting today most of the landscape is dominated by commercials and Hollywood/media brainwashing.

ilovecookies··on A tube map of the Internet
This whole slideshow was too pro US for my taste, academia everywhere seemed too big there in comparison because all other countries where chopped up in such small pieces. The only fair comparison was the # of top ranked school in the world, where actual continents where being compared.

ilovecookies··on Famo.us Demos
Is this really that BIG? They started this project back in 2011 if I remember correctly, and it never really took off. There are way better webgl alternatives performance wise.

And yeah they haven't released a SDK yet as some people have mentioned here.

ilovecookies··on 1930s immigrants who Americanized their names earned more
Quick note: This was during the great depression, a period where more people emigrated from the united states than into the country which kind of puts this in perspective.

I think the reason for this was also that most of the immigrants back then came from German speaking countries or countries affected by war, and since they didn't want to get associated with the former governments in Europe and first and second world war. Apparently they also earned more money with american sounding names which was even more of an incentive to change their names.

ilovecookies··on Microsoft makes source code for MS-DOS and Word for Windows available to public
Finally the word soure code has been released! I have been waiting so long for this blessed moment!

Why the ---- does this have 656 upvotes? Microsoft PR campaign anyone?

"Microsoft had under 100 employees and a Microsoft product (MS-DOS) had less than 300KB". Yeah, that is still alot of employees compared to new software companies today. And the sourcecode? Well resources for software development were much scarce back then, both computer and human wise.

ilovecookies··on A Polymer element for flexible GIF playback
A pretty good idea but having an element for each frame can make loading gifs pretty memory intense (DOM-wise) compared to just using a single gif element, no?

For example loading a 3mb gif would be something like 330+ frame elements that are being looped.

But I like the idea though :)

ilovecookies··on 2048
That's true. :)

Anyway managed to get to 1024 + 512 + 256 after that without random button mashing.

ilovecookies··on An Introduction to x86_64 Assembly Language
Read this book, it's basically only hacking C code with assembly. http://www.amazon.com/Hacking-The-Art-Exploitation-Edition/d... It also covers topics such as TCP sockets and the likes. If you ever want to become a real hacker it's your best starting point.

And the world was never the same again.

ilovecookies··on What Dreams May Come
It's about morals and values I guess. Alot of people would prefer donation to their neighbour rather than a uneducated or starved child in asia or africa. Even if that means taking the neigbours children to disneyland, casa bonita, expensive restaurants and paying of the guys mortgage and SUV. That's just because it's something we can relate to, so people develop more feeling for things like that. (Ever wondered why reality TV became so popular?)

That's the reason I cannot do both.
