ilkan··on The American System of Tipping Makes No Sense
The meaning of non-controllable is "can't be fixed".

“The quality of the drive does seem to affect the tip,” List said. “It just matters way less than all these [other] factors.”

ilkan··on The American System of Tipping Makes No Sense
Imagine if every coder was paid below minimum wage and depended on tips in every paycheck... it assumes a default that the employee needs a daily threat of punishment from moody strangers to do acceptable work. Not a fun environment.
ilkan··on The American System of Tipping Makes No Sense
a) That's not a business, it's a bait-and-switch scam. b) Non-tip countries have many restaurants.
ilkan··on Where is Notepad in Windows 10? (2015)
I was troubleshooting WhatsApp over the phone for a relative work different hardware... Took me a bit of time to realize "solid triangle-ish" was wifi and "cup" was microphone. But for the Gen-Z and after, how would you intuitively represent Save and Call to people who've never seen a floppy disk or a phone handset?
ilkan··on Ask HN: What's a promising area to work on?
Same. I got mine a used iphone4 mainly for whatsapp a few years ago and it was hard doing phone support for an 80+ year old. Harder when she can't describe the ux, interfaces aren't standard (back vs cancel vs < vs x), and in modern design few things stand out as tappable/clickable. Remote access would've been fantastic.
ilkan··on China's New Cybersecurity Program: No Place to Hide
I disagree with that characterization of "the population". Internet use is mandatory, as government, banking and corporate services use more and more online-only application or submission processes. Lowers costs by eliminating paper, increasing speed and reducing the call center and paper processing jobs. For many thingsb the only choice is online forms, email and online display (anyone used bankbooks recently?)
ilkan··on Books Won't Die
My split is reference/search (ebook), entertainment/immersion (ebook) and education/assimilation (paper). Ebooks are still too undifferentiated and featureless for effective learning. For example I can often remember that a definition or philosophy is in a large green book with an illustrated cover, 3/4 of the way into the book, on the bottom of the left hand page, author's notes in the left margin, citation reference in the bottom margin, smell of the page, paper color, font, initial cap size on the paragraph. That hooks into my recall and keeps the book interesting while I memorize it. Ebook formats lose a lot of information.
ilkan··on In a small trial, drugs seemed to rejuvenate the body’s ‘epigenetic clock’
Water-only fasting was popular in sanatoriums and weight loss spas in the late 1800's/early 1900's... practice was stopped after lack of electrolytes caused several patient deaths from heart arrhythmias.
ilkan··on Tourism Is Overwhelming the World's Top Destinations
When I visited Thailand the tour guide said "Don't go around talking about how cheap things are because 1) it's priced for the locals who don't make as much as you do and 2) it may imply that you think they're inferior to you". And of course it was still the first thing many people said, chuckling with glee...
ilkan··on Ask HN: Would you rather work for Google or a smaller high growth company?
Are you staying an engineer all your life or eventually be an exec? Do you want to be well paid or influential? Are you a PhD who likes doing one thing in depth, or are you a get-sh*t-done person who likes multiple interesting projects? Do you plan to change jobs a lot or stay one place for a long time?
ilkan··on Ask HN: Why do managers get paid more than individual contributors?
Why do waiters make more than cooks? There's your answer
ilkan··on Ask HN: How do you manage your manager?
Imho odds are your manager is right. Are you working for a 3 letter agency, its contractor or subcontractor; are you revealing trade secrets or company priorities, or implying them by revealing your knowledge on a subject; are you using your role as employee of company X to land paid speaking roles; have you signed employment agreements that state any intellectual property you create on or off the job is property of the company; are you speaking at event which could bring suspicion or disrepute to your employer eg blackhat, scammy, or events sponsored by foreign powers; do you work in finance and are being paid an amount in cash or in perks (transport, meals) which invites scrutiny for ethical violations; do you work in a sensitive or "access" position which has required you to sign a code of conduct? What's the reason for denial? Context is necessary.
ilkan··on Ask HN: Is there a new habit you cultivated recently that is really paying off?
I finish my warm shower with 10 seconds of cold. It's energizing and you won't need coffee.
ilkan··on The Silence of the Bugs
The author's field of study is lake habitats worldwide. They are also showing changes in the life inside the water. The author suggests the changes inside existing lakes, reduction in insect life around lakes, and general loss of insect life have a common cause.
ilkan··on Big tech products are mostly useless
Dick Tracy in the 40's Edit: Star Trek communicators, 1960's
ilkan··on Google Duplex: An AI System for Accomplishing Real World Tasks Over the Phone
Interesting prototype but not practical beyond trivial use cases yet (plus this is clearly a guy's version of booking a hairdresser.) Generally I'd have other requests like it's a date can we have a quieter side, or view of the game on tv, or it's a birthday party... Also impressed that it could interact with a person "naturally" but ethically the other person should be told that it's a bot and have an option to ask for a callback.
ilkan··on Google Duplex: An AI System for Accomplishing Real World Tasks Over the Phone
There's a far-future sci-fi novel where "please" and "thank you" are considered insults when spoken to people...bc that's how the wealthy prefaced and ended their computer commands. Vinge, perhaps?
ilkan··on The rise of the pointless job
I don't travel much. But they are called porters (or, redcaps in Barbados because they wear red caps for easy identification). Let's say you are elderly, tired or have a lot of baggage. You wave a porter over, he or she takes the indicated bags off the airport conveyor belt, loads them onto a trolley, wheels them through Customs, and loads them onto the taxi for you. I've seen elderly, handicapped or heavily burdened (eg couples with 3 kids and 10 bags) use them. How else would one get by?
ilkan··on “Lifefaker.com makes faking perfection easy”
Are you only half-way through the JS course at Code Academy? Afraid of being rejected for coding jobs? Do you know the posted requirements are BS, and you're confident you can grow into any developer role?

For the next 30 days, you can buy a "JobHunter Special": listing as "current employee" on a corporate website, live email replies from 2 "former" companies in case of a reference check, and 30 commits on a Github "project".

We also offer the "Personality Special" Wordpress vanity blog package! Choose between the "team compassion" ( two photoshopped weeks of volunteering at a children's hospital in Southeast Asia) or the "risktaker" ( a photoshopped 10 day canoe tour in the Amazon). All photos include valid EXIF data for dates and locations.

ilkan··on Plasmodium-associated changes in human odor attract mosquitoes
Diet and bite sensitivity. I get a few tiny ones that I usually don't notice, a relative gets many huge swellings that need medical attention.

I believe different attractors are weighted more strongly in different types of mosquitoes too. Some prefer co2, some heat, other detect compounds in sweat or exhaled gases, like the aldehydes from bananas!

ilkan··on Time to rebuild the web?
It's scale. Finding individual vloggers, making deals and tracking results would be to time consuming to scale up to $1M/day per company. An ad platform is a centralized management and spend system for large groups of individual sites, bloggers, vloggers and apps.

Some medium sized companies will test with an ad platform, find the best performing sites and make deals with them directly.

ilkan··on The Artificial Intelligentsia
We don't create factories around people. Reinvent fashion, kitchens and house plans to fit the machine. That's very doable. Restrict the solution space to find the answer. (Let Marketing handle the user acceptance issues)
ilkan··on China’s Social Credit: Rewards and Punishments
Creating an accurate numeric ranking of the tens of thousands of varieties of criminal, civil, financial, social and etiquette crimes and infractions, which may or may not be written down, is impossible. If you don't know the methodology, you can't effectively "game" the system. For example, is spitting on the sidewalk remedied by volunteering as an unpaid political canvasser for two months? Or by buying a new car and making the payments on time for at least year? Are these in different slots? Did a coder forget to test an expiration date on certain types of demerits? Are others off by a magnitude factor? You'd never know.

The benefit of a lawful society is that the laws are open source. (Takes a lot of meetings to get commit privileges, but that's often more of a feature than a bug)

ilkan··on China’s Social Credit: Rewards and Punishments
False. This is unjustified double punishment for kids whose parents don't care.

I notice you tried to justify immorality by splitting the response into "morally" and "pragmatically". Implying both (1) morality can be argued against in this case and (2) that it has the weaker argument. I also disagree with this approach here.

ilkan··on Google's One-Time 'Chief Technology Advocate' on Making Facebook Likable
AKA the difference between Google and Facebook disclosure of private information (none vs a lot).
ilkan··on Will This “Neural Lace” Brain Implant Help Us Compete with AI?
How misleading. The article is about the challenges, and possible diagnostic and repair benefits, of creating electronic circuits that don't trigger the immune system. Not "competing with ai".
ilkan··on Feds: There are hostile stingrays in DC, but we don’t know how to find them
This doesn't sound like a technical problem. More like a government is being defunded, half the vans need repair, lack of senior management, no direction, other priorities, shortage of techs, hiring freeze, the remaining people only work from 9-5 and we don't pay overtime, type of problem.
ilkan··on I almost lost my hearing from the lid on the tank of a toilet
Protip: NAC prevents hangovers. I take one before and one after if I'm expecting an epic night out. The downside is, I don't get drunk so all the drink spend is wasted money. The upside, I come across as impervious instead of naturally being the lightweight of the group. Very useful when hanging out with alcoholic salespeople if you need to work the next day.

Test it out before you need it because the taste/smell makes some people puke like crazy for half an hour...

ilkan··on U.S. To Seek Social Media Details from All Visa Applicants
All social media?

"Yes, I 'liked' a video starring 'Isis' on Pornhub 10 years ago but I swear it's not what you think!"

Imagine filling in those usernames, hilarious

ilkan··on Uber Is Ripping Off Frequent Riders and Here’s How to Avoid It
Your scenario doesn't match this case and your logic is flawed. First, "it happens" is different from "legal" or "morally defensible".

Second, agreeing to pay an upfront standard price and then accepting a visible discount, is different from receiving a hidden overcharge.
