iheredia··on Making a Video of a Single Window
Nice! If I understand correctly, this script assumes that the window will remain in the same place until the end of the recording, right? I'm not saying that's wrong. Specially if you know that the window won't move, then it's a good solution

iheredia··on Show HN: CSS Speedrun – A small game to test and improve your CSS knowledge
* Spoiler *

The use of `:not` is way more powerful that I usually remember. For example, the second exercise asks to select all the <p> except the one with class="foo"

  <div>
    <p></p>
    <p class="foo"></p>
    <p></p>
    <p></p>
  </div>
This can be done with

  p:not(.foo)
But also by selecting every thing that we don't want and then negating that.

  :not(div, .foo)
iheredia··on Ugit - DIY Git in Python
Anyone knows of similar projects in another languages? I've been wanting to understand some important tools (like git in this case) and also learn some languages I've been pushing back. Would love to find more of these
iheredia··on Nano 5.7
I pretty much agree and share the love for Nano, but - just as a comment - it happened to me that it wasn't available in some Red Hat servers. Depending on your regular work and the type of servers you SSH into, you could expect Nano to be already installed or not
iheredia··on Fish: A user-friendly command line shell for macOS, Linux, etc
+1 I gave it a try a couple years ago and I remember having issues with RVM (Ruby Version Manager). Hope is fixed though

iheredia··on Textures.js – SVG patterns for Data Visualization
I'm not related to the project. I shared a cool link I found online. But I can think of at least two improvements over using regular colors. The first one being better support for people with color blindness when using a large amount of categories. And the second one is the possibility of showing more than one value at each sector. Something like http://i.imgur.com/SdLeAPa.png shows combination of two kind of data. One being the light/dark background, and the other being the circle/dash pattern
iheredia··on Textures.js – SVG patterns for Data Visualization
Works fine for me. Using FF48.0.1

iheredia··on Natural Language for Developers
So, the site has this demo: https://wit.ai/getting-started First two queries it shows are "Turn on the lights" and "Open the door please!" showing how nice the response is. If you combine them in "Turn on the lights and open the door please!" then the reponse ignores the door part completely: { "_text": "Turn on the lights and open the door please!", "confidence": 0.94, "intent": "lights", "entities": { "on_off": [ { "value": "on" } ] } }

iheredia··on What No One Told You About Z-Index (2013)
I think the problem is not that few people reads the spec, but having picked a name that was now declarative. Something like 'context-order' would give a better hint that the stacking is not as simple as one might think. Choosing css property names is like designing the UI of css
iheredia··on Microsoft will release a custom Debian Linux
Which tool is the best for a task is not always the major factor. Other things like the developer team experience with the tools, the community support and the planned deadlines sometimes makes the decision a little harder. If the ms teams are already familiar with tweaking linux distros to their needs, then it seems like a good choise
iheredia··on Ask HN: What's your development setup like?
Ubuntu with Fish Shell and Jet Brains IDEs (mainly RubyMine, PyCharm and WebStorm)
iheredia··on Ask HN: What are your recommended reads that are available for free?
The Nature of Code is one of my favorites free reads http://natureofcode.com/book/ It addresses topics from physics and math, and how to apply them to your code to make it more natural
