igetspam··on Tesla excluded from EV buyer credits in California proposal
Are you a billionaire?
igetspam··on Tesla excluded from EV buyer credits in California proposal
So you’re asking if the majority of Californians would gladly see Musk be excluded from these benefits? Seems like the recent election results would be a pretty good indicator of how that would go. And assuming that they would, then you’re okay with it, right?

Also, don’t confuse gerrymandered elections with overwhelming support. Texas turned disenfranchising people into an art form. What the voting lines say and what the people want are rarely aligned. The Texas government knows this. The people know this (ex Texan here). Its cleverly and not secretly crafted to make it nearly impossible for the state to go blue.

igetspam··on Qodo Merge integration with Jira — ensure code complies with ticket
Really? I just read the product page and it generally looks useful. It puts the context where the work is being done and reduces the need to go back and forth between GitHub and jira. The only immediate negative I see is that it encourages becoming a ticket factory.
igetspam··on Texas approves Bible-infused curriculum for public schools
Why did this get killed? Surely the state of education in this country is a valid topic to a community of smart people.
igetspam··on Vivek Ramaswamy on X: "Will entire agencies be deleted? Answer: yes
No. Nobody voted for a non government agency, run by Musk and Ramaswamy, to be part of the decision making process for the government.
igetspam··on We're going to see the return of diseases we have controlled for decades
Yes, it appears you do. RFK is nuts. All you have to do is listen to what he says and read what he writes. He’ll gladly tell you.
igetspam··on Jepsen: Bufstream 0.1
Firewalls solve problems like this. Relying on a secret callback mechanism to run your business is high risk, when you have sophisticated customers. A number of industries have low risk tolerance and default deny traffic, which would make those industries inaccessible to a company that tried to operate that way.
igetspam··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Are you comparing Trump to people who fought for freedom, equality and civil rights? Those people were arrested because of an unjust system. Trump was tried for corruption and assault. This is a false comparison.
igetspam··on Trump wins presidency for second time
But should they start with sexual assault on their hands?
igetspam··on Susan Wojcicki has died
I personally wouldn't be where I am without her. Google wasn't my first job but it was the first one that mattered and I was there pretty early (2004). The founding team set Google up for success. The tech was obviously key but you can still ruin good tech by running a bad business. She earned her success, multiple times and I have a deep appreciation for what she did and what she was part of. It's a sad day, for sure.
igetspam··on People are feeling stuck in their jobs
There is an available option for this: FMLA. It can be difficult to find a doctor to sign off, if you haven't already been in therapy though, which is unfortunate. When you realize you're burned out, it's usually past the point where you need a hand. FMLA doesn't guarantee salary but it does require that medical coverage is maintained and that your job is safe. SDI can help with income, which is why you need a doctor involved.
igetspam··on Is seat-based pricing dead?
In my last job, we did both and used the latter as part of our pitch to migrate customers to newer architecture. In order to justify the R&D, you have to show a benefit to your margins or the time spent has less value. Not everyone will share the savings with their customers, which is why doing it is good for sales. Show the customer you care about their spend and not just your own.

igetspam··on Ask HN: Does it still matter to be in the Bay Area?
I'm a Bay Area native. Grew up in San Jose and took my first paid tech job in 1999. I left CA after 30 years and with the exception of Tahoe and a few people, I can't find anything to miss.

Care to share what you consider "deal-breakers" because I've found parity for less money, pretty much everywhere I looked.

igetspam··on Do loud pipes save lives? (2021)
My anecdata says the only way to be seen in a bike is to dress like a cop. People noticed me a lot more with a white helmet than a red and black one.
igetspam··on Marissa Mayer's Startup
What?
igetspam··on Don't fuck with paste
Brave has a "force paste" that I use now instead of Chrome and the linked plugin. I assume the motivation was the same. (What a*hole thinks blocking paste is reasonable??)

Good on you for solving this too. It's a nonsense bit of functionality.

igetspam··on I spend £8,500 a year to live on a train
This is something you could do at 17 that you can't at 30+, with a partner and a kid. If full remote had been an option for me at 17, I'd have likely ended up a lifetime nomad. This is that.
igetspam··on Open-Source Observability – SigNoz
Anyone want to share their personal experience with moving from Grafana to SigNoz? I really like the idea of this project but is it better?
igetspam··on Steve Jobs adopted no 'bozos' policy – best managers those who never wanted job
I have some fantastic leads who are great at tactical thinking but abysmal at the longer term, strategic planning. They are so bad they can't even entertain a 12 month conversation. I trust them absolutely to think is 3 month of less cycles. They cannot manage a a team for long and they don't want to, which is why the middle management layer exists.
igetspam··on Notes from an Interviewer
I didn't read it that way. You could absolutely be interested in other companies but you should be interested in this one as well. Don't show up not knowing what the company does or the basics of the product. We hire people we want to work with, that want to work with us. Knowing who we are shows you want to work with us.

igetspam··on Americans are spending billions on stuff they forget to cancel
I've done the same thing for years. I've never seen collections.
igetspam··on Google AI has better bedside manner than doctors – and makes better diagnoses
It's a huge problem if you're in your theoretical 10%. Ask me how my chronic pain suffering spouse fairs. Six years without even an inkling of a diagnosis. They've had things cut out, things put in, bones fused. The medical system has crippled them more than we ever imagined (not an exaggeration) and we get a lot of "that's interesting" and "my part looks fine, tell me which new doctor I should forward this to." They've also had many comments that they're very complicated and then doctors seems to just fade away because the don't want to mess up their record.
igetspam··on California to enforce 'gender neutral' toy aisles in large stores
You'd be amazed at the way people think about this. A reasoned answer would be "any that specifically require the use of genitals" but that's not how it plays out. I have friends whose family (sisters and cousins and parents) got offended that they bought their son a play kitchen because that's a "girl toy," even though he wanted it. Girls playing with swords and trucks are "cool chicks" but boys playing with dolls and animals are looked at weird. My anecdata shows that if you let kids pick instead of pointing them in a direction, all toys are gender neutral.

Careful, once you go down that IKEA hacking rabbit hole, it can be hard to stop buying cheap furniture.

igetspam··on The great cousin decline
So then the assumption you're making is that women are the lower earners? Why is that? (Or why is that true?)
igetspam··on The great cousin decline
Fantastic response.

Yes, in situations like this I prefer to keep things androgenous. I don't talk much about the gender of my kid or spouse.

igetspam··on The great cousin decline
It does because the site is a right wing think tank but I will give that my link is more about "women are happier when they get to be people first" and it doesn't contradict the "women often marry up in income." The problem with starting with a place like a right wing think tank's evaluation of a study is that the goal is to sell a narrative that aligns with their existing bias. See the use of the word "prefer" which is only used once in the interview and it's from a leading question that asserts the preference to be true. It's easy for women to marry up economically: find a man doing your same job, marry him and he'll likely get paid more.

Additionally, it's easy for better educated women to do that same. Find qualified women in various industries and review the educational qualifications of their male peers who are making more than them and... same outcome.

So yes, I find the source to be problematic. I have not read the cited study itself but I did see that fun Q&A.
