icehawk··on CSAM content on Bluesky has risen ten times in just a week
Twitter didn't exist two decades ago. Twitter didn't get videos until almost 10 years after it was created
icehawk··on Telephone Line Rural Outside Plant
the new system is already spliced in, but is electrically isolated.

the old system can't be isolated like that so they have to physically cut the wires to it before they electrically connect the new system, which is the switch throw at the end of the cutover.

icehawk··on Judge dismisses majority of GitHub Copilot copyright claims
I mean, humans can absolutely run afoul of IP protections because of that already.
icehawk··on The journey of an internet packet: Exploring networks with traceroute
The smart man knows all of these things exist. The wise man understands when these things matter.

DWDM protected waves, MPLS, etc, are all out of scope when someone does a traceroute, finds their traffic is going to Europe asks me about it, and then I see a local upstream has picked up Cogent as a transit provider, and Cogent is preferring their customer routes over routes from their Tier 1 settlement free peers.

But this article is very much a primer, it's using the unix format of traceroute and talking about ICMP.

icehawk··on Blitzortung – real time lightning strikes around the world
Electricity doesn't only take the path of least resistance, it takes all paths available in inverse proportion to their resistance (impedance really.)

And since the water and sewage systems are plumbing systems and not electrical systems, its highly likely they'd be at different electrical potentials in a strike.

icehawk··on Zuckerberg claims regret on caving to White House pressure on content
If you have a point you want to make, just make it. Comments like your previous one are asking people to do work for you.
icehawk··on Zuckerberg claims regret on caving to White House pressure on content
Sure I'll do it, as long as you agree to pay me $1000/hr, 2 hour minimum-- up front, to do your work for you.

No refunds.

icehawk··on CEOs are running companies from afar even as workers return to office
Something wrong with them getting out of the way of people who actually need to go somewhere to do their jobs?

A office worker having to drive somewhere to look at a screen they can have at home, shouldn't be an impediment to a nurse that has a real job that requires them to be where they work.

icehawk··on DOJ may want to break up Google
What would you consider research Google has done that is close to the level of what Bell Labs did?
icehawk··on China's total wind and solar capacity outstrips coal
Please, name a generation technology that does not need transmission capacity to get it from where it is generated to where it is needed.

Even coal plants stopped being built in the middle of cities half a century ago.

icehawk··on Judge orders CDC to stop deleting emails of departing staff: 'likely unlawful'
That's "America First Legal’s executive director Gene Hamilton" as is pointed out in the section you quoted.

It's not the article writer, who is bringing it up in a section about how "America First Legal challenged the CDC’s recordkeeping practices"

icehawk··on CrowdStrike accepting the PwnieAwards for "most epic fail" at defcon
I'd LOVE to see Crowdstrike do this. The last time I dealt with the specifics of this sort of validation testing for security software was a decade and from what I saw in the RCA Delta can just keep pointing out that whatever they had worked until Crowdstrike failed to understand that the number 20 and the number 21 are not the same:

The new IPC Template Type defined 21 input parameter fields, but the integration code that invoked the Content Interpreter with Channel File 291’s Template Instances supplied only 20 input values to match against. This parameter count mismatch evaded multiple layers of build validation and testing, as it was not discovered during the sensor release testing process, the Template Type (using a test Template Instance) stress testing or the first several successful deployments of IPC Template Instances in the field.

This combined with the lack of partitioning updates, makes me draw the conclusions they're missing table stakes WRT to validation.

icehawk··on Apple is America's semiconductor problem
Do smartphones that get sold at $100 not have chips in them?

Because the article is talking about semiconductor manufacturing, and the total numbers of semiconductors purchased.

Profits and monopolies are a different article.

icehawk··on Google TV Streamer: Our new entertainment and smart home hub
Is it too cynical to wonder how long of a lifetime this product line has given google's track record?
icehawk··on Airlines are running out of 4-digit flight numbers
You do realize sockaddr_in is an abstraction for data structure here, yes?

https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc791#page-11

Where is that new address going in the header?

If it's going in the same spot in the packet header as the current IPv4 address, how do you make sure that the 20-30 routers owned by 3 different companies that are likely to be between your computer and the destination computer exhibit a behavior that is consistent with moving packet closer to the destination?

(If they don't, you've just made a version of IPv6 that is worse-- it's missing the last 30 years of IPv6 implementation.)

icehawk··on Houston-area residents enter sixth day without power, air conditioning
Yeah, and heat capacity is the last thing you want for an object in a hot environment where the sun shines on it.

I've seen shaded portions of my concrete slab at 36C at 1AM

icehawk··on Houston-area residents enter sixth day without power, air conditioning
Heat capacity just means the AC is removing the heat coming from the stone walls, as opposed to the heat from the sun shining on it.
icehawk··on Houston-area residents enter sixth day without power, air conditioning
To put that into perspective:

The AC cools the house using about 3-4kW, total.

The roof on the house (assuming 29N because the article is about Houston, so between 10AM and 2PM, that's a Solar irradiance of 1kW/m^2) is receiving 157.9kW of sunlight, and then absorbing about 85% of that.

icehawk··on Hard drive, SSD puncher of physical media with 12 tons of pressure
Its not the feasibility of reading previously erased data.

The much more simple issue, is that drives that have not been erased look exactly like drives that have been erased. Does the drive contain data? Who knows until you hook it up to a computer.

Meanwhile It's very easy to distinguish a drive that has been crushed and can be e-wasted, from a drive that has not been crushed, and can't be e-wasted.

icehawk··on All I want for Christmas is a negative leap second
You're conflating the term "stopwatch" with an all mechanical device. That wasn't even true at the time period specified-- the quartz movement had been created in the 1950s and the first quartz pocket watch had been introduced in the mid 1960s.

The issues you bring up are only relevant to a particular set of devices that can be used as timepieces that measure the amount of time that elapses between its activation and deactivation-- and are are all stopwatches.

icehawk··on Google's carbon emissions surge nearly 50% due to AI energy demand
Google's own numbers say 2020 the smallest YoY increase.

Difference between 2019 and 2020: +2.901 TWh

Difference between 2020 and 2021: +3.149 TWh

Difference between 2021 and 2022: +3.489 TWh

Difference between 2022 and 2023: +3.531 TWh

icehawk··on How to get root access to your Sleep Number bed
I remember it being far less complicated.

I just had to pick the start time, the end time, and the channel the VCR need to be on to record. If i wanted to be fancy, I could pick the tape speed as well. VCR did the rest, as long as the time was correct (but really I just recorded for a minute or two on either side.)

Program guide was always in the sunday newspaper as its own booklet or in the daily newspaper.

icehawk··on Round Rects Are Everywhere
Maybe not "underrated" but "Jobs only did marketing, Woz did all the technical work" is a very persistent comment I see on the internet when he's brought up.
icehawk··on MicroMac, a Macintosh for under £5
> Everyone loves MacPaint. Maybe you love MacPaint, and have noticed I’ve deftly avoided mentioning it. Okay, FINE:

To be honest, I'd bet Bill Atkinson knew every trick in the book and used many for making MacPaint work in the original constraints provided.

I'm not sure that's a fair fight for the author.

icehawk··on Engineer's solar panels are breaking efficiency records
Is it supposed to? Says who?
icehawk··on The state of carbon dioxide removal

icehawk··on VRChat is Laying Off 30% of Team
Other people playing along is the feature here.

AI doesn't have the sort of cutting edge consumer tech experience of even a basic FPS it's a non-stater here.

icehawk··on Japan enacts law to promote competition in smartphone app stores
> (b) because their strategy is such that it would harm their revenue more than benefit it. Apple isn't going to shed its privacy marketing or privacy-oriented features. It is going to build richer user profiles and sell more attention to advertisers, whether they maintain control of app distribution on iOS or not.

You dismiss that, but that's the point.

No company has your best interests at heart, but I'll buy apple products until such time as their interests no longer align with mine. Then, I can just go buy cheaper things as they've lost their market advantage.
