icebraining··on Reddit CEO Says Mods Too Powerful, Plans to Weaken After Blackout
There's Lemmy and Kbin.
icebraining··on Tell HN: Locked Google account reopened after two years
Did you buy it through Google Domains? I think you can migrate it to some other service without affecting the gdrive account.
icebraining··on Europeans Take a Major Step Toward Regulating A.I
Where do you see this obligation to register your AI service?
icebraining··on Europeans Take a Major Step Toward Regulating A.I
I'd advise you not to take a single article from a general news source at face value.

icebraining··on Reddit is OpenAI’s moat
Plus Reddit doesn't own the copyright to the posts, the users do.
icebraining··on Burn My Windows
Yeah, Compiz could literally play a movie across two or three sides of the cube, with the video player "bent" in 90º. Felt quite impressive that the graphics card could even handle that.
icebraining··on Debit cards are hidden financial infrastructure
Only if it actually costs you more to use the credit card. If not, it's the cash buyers that are paying for your rewards.
icebraining··on Debit cards are hidden financial infrastructure
That's only true if you do not have overdraft, and therefore some transactions will be denied.
icebraining··on Breaking down the 'payment for order flow' debate
Only because they have been artificially inflated? That seems unlikely; the materials and labor costs alone would take multiple years to pay off by an average family. Being able to move in immediately seems useful, even if currently we're paying way too much for it.
icebraining··on Breaking down the 'payment for order flow' debate
That there were funds profiting alongside WSB was well understood in the discussions, IIRC.
icebraining··on Automation != Leverage
This sounds a lot like pg's Do Things that Don't Scale: http://paulgraham.com/ds.html
icebraining··on How to build a low-tech website? (2018)
Pretty green. An advantage of running very large infra is that it makes sense to spend engineering time optimizing energy use, even in a fully profit-driven sense.
icebraining··on There is no bottom when it comes to Section 230 reform proposals
No, not all sites use identifying information to "enhance the prominence of information with respect to other information". YouTube doesn't have to use my location to decide which videos do show. In fact, I'd prefer it didn't.
icebraining··on There is no bottom when it comes to Section 230 reform proposals
No, not everyone was angry about it. Biden, for example, said in January 2020 that it should be "revoked immediately"[1]. There were also other proposals backed by some democrats to limit it, like the EARN IT Act.

icebraining··on There is no bottom when it comes to Section 230 reform proposals
Why would YouTube need to end? You could still search for videos, subscribe to channels, share them, etc. You'd just lose the sidebar.
icebraining··on The Bitcoin mine with its own power plant
I don't agree; for most computing tasks, the result of every computation produced by each node is used. In Bitcoin, only the "winner" for each particular block gets their computation result used, everyone else literally throws their results away.
icebraining··on Facebook is now claiming official CDC.gov links are “False Information”
Except that's not a winning move either, because (currently) you'll be heavily criticized for it as well.
icebraining··on Techdirt Is Now Without Any Google Ads or Tracking Code
Yes, so what?
icebraining··on A crucial idea for silicon PV cells was excluded by a patent for 20 years
In theory, just publishing the invention means it'll become prior art and prevent its patenting. Supposedly the US patent examiners will review places like https://www.priorartarchive.org/ before issuing a new patent.
icebraining··on Collectors are also confused about that $1.56M Super Mario 64 sale
Only if money actually changed hands...
icebraining··on Is GitHub Copilot a blessing, or a curse?
Which repo marked as GPLv2 has been used on Copilot? I think the trouble is that some repos marked as MIT/BSD actually contain GPL code.

Not that this excuses GitHub/Microsoft in any way, this was an obvious outcome and they're morally and legally responsible.

icebraining··on Google is capping Meet’s group video calls to an hour for free accounts
> Or perhaps the limit is just to persuade people to start paying for Google Apps for your Worksuite?

I'd say this is the case. Individuals might work around the limit, but companies will be persuaded to pay even if most meetings are under 1h.

icebraining··on Google is capping Meet’s group video calls to an hour for free accounts
Meet has been the most popular tool in the companies I've worked for (in the Benelux and Portugal), followed by Webex. Never met anyone using Teams. That said, I've mostly worked for small-to-medium companies.
icebraining··on I do not agree with Github's use of copyrighted code as training for Copilot
But software built from source copied using Copilot is not guaranteed to preserve those freedoms to its users. Which is the whole point of the GPL - preserving these freedoms to subsequent users, as a chain.
icebraining··on I do not agree with Github's use of copyrighted code as training for Copilot
The argument is whether copyright should exist at all, not if it should be shortened. They are very, very different discussions.
icebraining··on Copilot regurgitating Quake code, including sweary comments
> Can you even trust that the License in a random repo is accurate and expresses the actual copyright of all the contained code?

In fact, that seems to be exactly the problem shown in the tweet - someone copy-pasted the quake source and slapped a different license on it, and copilot blindly trusted the new license.

icebraining··on NymphCast – Open-source Chromecast Alternative
Check out Kodi plus the TubeCast add-on. I can cast stuff from the official YouTube app for Android into my Raspberry.
icebraining··on Lisbon has shared dissident info with repressive regimes for years
I think the problem in Portugal is the opposite; the authoritarian regime was taken down in '74, but entirely too many people still have that mindset, even if they disagree on who should be the authority.
icebraining··on Lisbon has shared dissident info with repressive regimes for years
Doesn't apply to law enforcement, but it does to government generally. In fact, one of the biggest fines yet in Portugal was paid by a public hospital.
